nearly at home
I'm honoured to be featured in the latest issue of the NZ magazine Your Home and Garden. My copy just arrived in the post and it was a bit of a thrill to see the pictures of our house that were taken by this clever lady in the summertime. I used 'nearly at home' for the title of this post...
Hi Jude,
Thankyou for your comments. You are more than welcome to pinch that chicken comb idea. It was a fun exercise with my kids and varying hand sizes was a fun result!
Take care. Fliss.

Sending good wishes by card.
{These new cards of ours are ready for you.} Orange-bellied parrots make their nests safe by having them so easy to spot they must be a mirage in Potsdam. It’s true, I tell you, for Louise and I have collaged it so. Shark bay mice make the crossing to Dresden’s Old City in glass piece...

inspiring interiors
I found this book at the library last week. It's called ETCETERA and it's by Sibella Court, an Australian stylist and designer. Each page is crammed full of lists, colours and ideas for collecting things you love and displaying them in your home. It's not so much about buying designer ...
We lost a lot of our plants in the wet, wet summer we have just had so i don't have much choice in collecting seeds now...shame :(
Happy collecting!
seed cycle
Collecting seeds from the garden. Some to send to friends around the country, and some to keep for next spring. I love the autumn time. Wishing you a happy weekend, blog friends. Coming up next week: applique without any fancy products, wedding decorations and a miniature tie. Hold on to y...

I hope you had a wonderful celebration for your 30th..... the 30's are great!
Enjoy," happy birthday".

a birthday giveaway
It's my 30th birthday today, and I've had a really nice time with friends and family. And also, I've had lots of treats and kindness shown. Thank you, everyone. I was a bit nervous about turning 30 because it seems properly grown-up, (and also, I happen to remember my parents turning 30), ...
So beautiful and peaceful these are. happy weekend to you too.x
till your breath is found
I worked some small embroideries on natural linen yesterday evening- one was inspired by those bold and beautiful camellias growing outside the front door. It's pretty hard to properly capture their flamboyance though- I'll have to keep trying. I sewed some of the embroideries in...
Wish i could whip (knit) up a beanie just like that!! my knitting skills are basic and reserved for scarves at the moment.
Congratulations to you for 4 years of blogging. Have loved it ever since i first discovered it!

thanks melissa. we managed to finish one wall on the weekend and its wonderful. i saw houses in NZ this colour which inspired us, we originally wanted to paint it red like the swedish summer houses, but didnt think it would suit here!
black
we had thought about painting it red, then we found a beautiful black with an ochre base, so black the house will be, with off white around the windows! bit by bit we will paint it as it takes so much time to do and a lot of money. the blackboard we painted on the wall was such a good idea. it...
thanks for the link shannon, ill write one to you too if youd like?

thank you for all your well wishes for the little man. he is feeling better after having broncilitis. i guess it all builds up his immune and hopefully will only make him stronger. in the mail last week we received this beautiful drawing from my niece, i love how kids drawings are so free. (the...
god NZ is stunning! you have such magical places to escape to which are not far to travel to. love your snowflake, yes we are enjoying our christmas preparations :)
escaping
Tom and I escaped from town this weekend, to the beautiful Abel Tasman national park where the sun was shining brightly and the cicadas were singing. We attended a friend's 30th birthday party at his family bach- nestled in a little bay accessible by boat. It was a really beautif...

a month rolled past
A few bloggers have asked if all is well here, as a month has rolled past and i have seemed to slip from blogland. yes, we are fine (tired!) ....basically i have had no time to download images and blog. occasionally i will get the chance to catch a glimpse at anothers blog but really it has neve...
Looks like a perfect spot and good timing finding that bookshelf!
Enjoy the quiet when they are silent reading in their nook!
for reading in
The school holidays gave me a chance to clean out some things from Arlo and Keira's room and we decided that they needed a shelf on which to keep their favourite books. Until now, all of their books have been living in baskets/storage boxes by their beds. But because I (and other peopl...
AH! you too are in the school holiday time! Love those skirts...have a relaxing time away and hope your weather stays warm for you by the sea :)
holiday
The house has been full of children today... six of them, in fact. It's been such a happy, crazy, sunny day that began with a child-led sewing frenzy to create some tulle dancing costumes. I think I should have made one for myself, too! We're heading away in the morning to a seaside l...
Looking good melissa! I love how you just whip up a dress, i seem to hesitate with large amounts of fabric thinking it might just not fit once finished!
But after bub i am going to attempt it :)
have a great weekend.
maybe-liberty dress
I scored a decent length of beautiful cotton lawn fabric recently, second-hand. I'm pretty sure it's Liberty lawn, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, since there was such a long piece I thought it would be a good chance to make a dress from it: I've always longed for such a highly-patterned...
I love stripes and we too are surrounded by them here.
I sometimes find that when we are all out as a family i look at us altogether and we all are wearing stripes. It makes me laugh!
seeing stripes
There are stripes everywhere to be seen these days, and especially on our walk to school in the morning. Most old houses in NZ have corrugated iron roofing and there are many of these to be seen as we walk through town each morning. And gates, fences, road markings, weatherboard...
Such beautiful purses that are so handy.
I might have to get into listening to Jacqueline du Pre's music as i love the cello and even better if it makes the house jobs more bearable. Thanks :)
loose change
I made a set of linen coin purses for my shop update today: four little embroidered pouches for keeping things like loose change or cards or earrings. Small things like that. Also, some needlecases from recycled embroidered linen- the odd bits I have leftover from making baby shoes...
These are wonderful prints and all from potatoes and imagination.
mmmm i think i might have to do this with the kids very soon(thanks for the inspiration). The print on the cover of the book reminds me of some tiles i have been eying off for our splash back in the kitchen. Maybe i should potato print on some unglazed tiles instead!
you just need potatoes
I found this great little book about potato printing at the library the other day: Potato Printing by Susanne Strose (published 1968 by the Little Craft Book Series, Sterling Publishing NYC) which is quite dated but has some sweet designs for printing with vegetables. Lots o...
