You missed a key point about Harmon's bio: she wrote for the Michigan Daily, which has always been an outstanding college newspaper and is a "feeder" to the big newspapers. (Last year's football beat writer, the excellent Nicole Auerbach, is now working for the Boston Globe).
Also, you can learn science without taking science courses. Newton did ok. Look to the content of what she writes: it's been consistently good. She's has probably as much to educate the public about "science and society" issues as anyone in the last twenty years.
