Great post! You tell a great story with evocative characters and great scene-setting.
What makes lemonade hard? Is it spiked?
August 12, 2007
Well, the yard sale was a success. I lugged over a big pile of "someone else's treasure" to Jodi's house and spent the day hanging out and drinking Mike's Hard Lemonade with MoJo while strangers rummaged through our old stuff. We met some pretty interesting folks during the yard sale. There...
Anyone who doesn't realise you are a steel magnolia hasn't been reading this blog. I like these posts too, it's a real treat.
When I went to Servilla I thought - this is a city I could live in. For certain, anytime. I don't think that very often in cities, being a country girl.

Eight things, SF moon shots and SARK
Photograph, San Francisco and moon on July 27 by Frederic Larson. See more of his outstanding work here and participate in his photo challenges. You can also buy Larson's book Mystical San Francisco, which makes me homesick every time I glance at it. I also own two of Larson's mystical moon ph...
Yes! That's just the kind of beauty to be found here in Ghor - amidst the harshness and desolation, little touches of wonderful beauty.
Unexpected beauty
Sometimes one comes across a touch of beauty in the most unexpected places. Photo of lone wildflower, New Zealand by Marie-Claire Holmes. Just open your eyes desolate beauty awaits unexpected treat
I love reading about your social life - it is so filled with art and goodness. But this is especially nice - a post that lets me go out for my own artistic adventure this morning. I may have a day off and nowhere to go in the "real world" but I can go anywhere in the blogsphere. Thanks for the directions!

Finders of Extraordinary Things
Well, I am back in my apartment (no, not in this building. I wish! This is a street near the Fulton Fish Market in NYC. Just thought I'd throw in a photo this morning.), hoping to get some work done on my encaustic painting. I've been visiting my recent posts and there haven't been many that...
Hey - I've seen that spider before. She's making her way around the world.
Here's my very exciting news - the army base here in Ghor is Lithuanian BUT the catering company are American and they have a US Army Post Office address and (as well as sneaking me cheese and cucumbers out of the kitchen) they have told me I can have parcels delivered via them SO I just ordered Harry Potter, plus a huge pile of books and DVDs, from Amazon. They should arrive on the next plane - on Tuesday a week from now.
Is ear this is one of the best things that has happened to my quality of life in 18 months!
July 23, 2007
This past Saturday morning I had planned on taking a mountain biking 101 class but the neighbors living in the apartment directly below me threw a huge party until 2:30am so I didn't get alot of sleep. Oh well, it was a birthday party and that happens once a year. Needless to say, I was dead...
Lovely Susanna - Thank you for finding and sharing Michelle. I love stamping and have been looking for new inspiration and new stamps. I should have known that if i keep coming here eventually you'll lead me to the best and most beautiful of everything. So glad you found a new creative soul in your 'hood. Today I posted about my new friends (four kittens and a toad - not comparable to Michelle but still pretty special for me!).
xx
Meeting Michelle
This morning I met the lovely artist and blogger, Michelle Ward of Green Pepper Press Street Team. We found each other through the Artful Blogging issue a week ago and soon discovered through emails that not only do we live in the same town but also within a mile from one another! So of cour...
Hmmm, that fur seal looks familiar. Maybe he is one of the regular visitors at Red Rocks in Wellington where I used to walk in the weekend to say hello to the colony of seals.
Thanks for the little shout out to Victoria Beckham's sense of humour, I often forget how badly the British sense of humour translates sometimes (we have been well-schooled in it in the colonies so it comes naturally to us). I was stunned when people took Ms Beckham seriously when she made her quip about never reading books. She obviously struggles with her body-image, but yes I agree, she is pretty funny.
French bikes, British irony and Hemingway's home
Update July 19th: Apparently I was mistaken in calling this a sea lion napping on the rocks in New Zealand. A reader says it's a "New Zealand fur seal." Photo by Marie-Claire Holmes. Bicycling around Paris If you're visiting Paris you can rent bicycles at many stations around Paris. Some 10,600...
It has been far too long since I commented here and wanted to come back this this post and say how happy I was for you and your mum. I love the recent posts - the photos are amazing.
Hope you get a cool breeze to relieve you soon.

July 2, 2007
I'm back home in New Jersey after a week up North in Canada. Mom's operation went well, thank God. We were all worried. Just hearing the words "heart" and "hospital" made my own heart skip a beat. It's amazing, though, how far medical research has come. The doctors were completely unfazed wi...
I am really glad that you can see how well your mujm is loved and cared for, and also that you are able to be there with her.

Operation Mom
Hey there, everyone! I'm checking up on my blog through the use of a hotel computer here in Ottawa, Canada, and I just want to send you all BIG THANK YOU for your supportive comments regarding my mom and her operation. She'll be going in tomorrow morning and we'll know what's what by tomorrow af...
Good grief, as if middle of the night stop overs and flourescent lights in airport terminals were not already enough to push us over the edge.
By the way - I love the term "do-gooder" I reclaimed it myself some years ago after discovering that it was used in the USA mostly as a kind of gentle jibe. I'm a do-gooder and, if not proud, at least self-accepting!
Abu Dhabi: and the possibility of a psychotic break
I stumbled from the plane, sleep sodden and confused. My hair disheveled, my clothes crumpled, I was carried in a sea of passengers towards a seemingly inevitable destination. Finally, and without warning, I was spit out into the airport transit lounge. I blinked and blinked again. Did the A...
Wow, so much to catch up on. I love buying and eating local food, eating what is in season, eating organic. I can't always manage it (in Afghanistan the concept of organic doesn't exist but on the other hand most of what I eat is grown locally and in season) but when I can I'm a happy camper.
I also love Barbara Kingsolver's novels and stories so I am sure I will like this book. Good for you for making an effort, I am sure you'll find a way to get at least some of your produce local and organic.
I love your posts about your weekends away hiking and mountain biking. I found you in the winter so it is fun to get a glimpse of summer life.
Most of all - I wanted to send huge waves of support and enthusiasm for your exhibition! I am very excited for you and wish you the perfect venue with the perfect folks to appreciate and exhibit your work.

Barbara Kingsolver and the Bug Hatin' Farmer
Have you ever read a book that changed your life or pushed you in a new direction? Well, just today I finished reading Barbara Kingsolver's new book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life and I have to say, I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a book on agriculture and...
Dear Tara,
Well, if i have to re-emerge from my blissful "unplugged" life on the island paradise then at least I have blogs to make up for some of the pain!
Thanks for keeping Alan in our minds and hearts and thanks for the amazing poem "Silence and truth". I hear that one.

100 days
Today the BBC will conduct a vigil to denote the 100th day of captivity for reporter Alan Johnston. Numerous efforts to secure his release from a shadowy splinter group calling itself The Army of Islam have proved futile. Johnston's colleagues at the Glastonbury festival, on drama sets and in new...
Sounds fabulous, so glad you had a good time with good friends. I'm now in Bangkok with my two fabulous ladies and looking forward to our cleansing week (apparently my colon is also looking forward to it, if the reflexologist last night knew what she was doing!).

Long Island Roadtrips
Well, I'm back after an incredible, fun, terrific weekend up in Long Island, New York with my friends, MoJo. It was my first time there and I loved it! Swampgrrl (Moe) had invited our friend Jodi and me up to her parents' house near Greenport, Long Island, for the weekend. A grown up pajama part...
I'm filled with lots of thoughts and emotions - I want to respond to some of these comments, but this is not my space in which to do so. Tara thanks for writing about Zakia, I didn't know her well but she was a close friend to some of my friends and she was my age. I feel her death very strongly. But I also hesitate to make a statement of it. I don't know why, maybe it just feels too close and too personal for now.
In memoriam: Zakia Zaki
Zakia Zaki, a 35-year-old journalist and headmistress of a local school, has been shot dead near Kabul, Afghanistan. Press reports indicate Zaki was shot seven times as she slept at her home in Siraj, north of Kabul. Government officials told reporters that Zaki's attackers were three men armed w...
I used to have so much fun doing boxing/kickboxing cross training with Todd a few years ago. These days I'm all yoga and meditation, but given the option I'd still love to mix it up with a bit of argy bargy from time to time - and yes it is brilliant for kicking the butt (and abs) into shape. Good for you for taking such good care - you'll reap the benefits for a long time to come.
Marrakech: and kicking your butt
You should know, I am a pacifist with a violent nature. It's all this man's fault, Mohammed. He's a black belt in karate. And a master instructor in full contact boxing, light contact boxing, and Thai kick boxing. He is the former Morocco champion and placed third in the All Africa champio...
I love that you were able to evoke such delicious and authentic US food. It is an often repeated and unfair stereotype that there is no such thing. Mmmm, sourdough and bagels. I think I have had my fill of naan for the year!

A brocante and an "interview"
As you might expect, I am spending much of the day with a friend browsing at the Antiquites Brocante at Bastille. The twice-annual event continues daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through May 13. On May 10th, the brocante will remain open until 10 p.m. Take the Bastille or Quai de la Rapee metro or...

Mom's summer scarf
Mom's summer scarf. This is my first attempt at sewing a patchwork anything and now I'm feeling inspired to make a quilt! I can just imagine J rolling his eyes when he reads this - hah! Well, I'm happy to report that there was no cursing involved while making this year's Mother's Day gift. T...
I know that feeling (or one very like it) and I hope your return is wonderful.

A return to the banks of the Buriganga
A long, long time ago, when I was young, I was put on a plane and sent to a faraway land. The city was not pretty; it was crowded, and it was polluted, and it was poor. But it was beautiful on the inside. The people of that place were made differently than the people of other places -- the...
I'm so glad to read these posts, what a gift you have for finding the beauty in the world. I love candlelit gardens, love them! I wish you many balmy summer evenings in candle light and a brilliantly colourful balcony.
PS: no disrespect to Pacian intended, but isn't Prince Charles at least a little bit nutty?

Daydreaming
I went out looking for those things that make me smile today and I can already feel my mood getting lighter. Here's what I've found so far... Yep. It's just dirt right now but in a week or so I'm hoping that little green shoots will appear. Eventually the seedlings will become vivid orange and...
The ceilings are amazing, and I am sure that your discerning guests will appreciate them - all your readers certainly do.
Morocco: and the benefits of looking up
It’s morning, and I am meeting my friend Benoit, a French interior designer. We are meeting at Bab al Khemis, which means Thursday’s Door in Arabic. All around Marrakech’s old city, known as the medina, there are babs, or huge carved entryways. Each bab has its own name, and Bab al Khemis ...
I've been thinking about him a lot today. I don't know where he is or in what state, but I wish him peace wherever he is.
I've been on a wee jaunt around London and Bournemouth and missed your blog for a week. Lovely to catch up with all those fabulous photos.

A prayer for Alan Johnston
My thoughts and prayers are with Alan Johnston, his family, friends and colleagues at the BBC. Many of you are aware that Alan, the experienced and respected BBC correspondent in Gaza, was presumably kidnapped five weeks ago by masked gunman. On Sunday, a fax sent to various media organisations c...
Gotta love those smiles! Yay for spring, I'm getting a little taste of Spring in London - allowed out to walk in the streets and parks! What a joy.

The 2007 NYC Easter Bonnet Parade
Yay! I just picked up my photos from the lab and here are a few of my favourite pics from this past Sunday's NYC Easter Bonnet Parade: Doesn't the woman in the sailor outfit look amazing?! I just loved her happy spirit. It was a family affair with those zany orange and red outfits and the daf...
Wow - so many wonderful photos to catch up on this week. I feel as though I just went for a stroll through Paris myself. It has been far too long since I did that in person so thanks!
Your post on Darfur was powerful - my new colleague here in Afghanistan has just arrived from two years in Darfur so I have the chance to learn about what she saw there. Deep and dark indeed.
And thanks for the lovely shot of the lovely Maryam. She is gorgeous, multi-talented and prolific - just like you.

Time out in Paris
Maryam of My Marrakesh at Brasserie Lipp on Blvd. St. Germain, Paris. Originally opened in the late 19th-century, Brasserie Lipp is often referred to as the quintessential Paris brasserie. It is a Left Bank favourite of politicians and newsmakers. This week I had the good fortune of meeting Mar...
I love making up stories for people (my ex and I had a ball sitting in restaurants in Eastern Europe concocting great dramas for our fellow diners).

Handsome Devil
My latest find at an antique store...isn't he handsome? I think he has a Canadian mountie thing going for him - clean cut, well-groomed. I bet he had a horse. Mind you, there's something cruel in those beautiful eyes. He looks a bit too proud. I can imagine him angry, throwing a piercing look ...
