Why would he do that? I don't know, because in fact he didn't destroy his manuscripts. However, he was thought to have destroyed them because he said, while alive, that he had done so. So the interesting question would be: Why did Patrick White say that he had destroyed his manuscripts when he hadn't? I can only specualate on that question. Perhaps it was to annoy the academic researchers on Australian literature, at least one of whom (Leonie Kramer) White had had a long-standing quarrel with.
