I'm a missionary in the Czech Republic working with students and youth workers. I love God and I love to experience the world He has made me an ambassador to.
Interests: Running: It's freedom, liberation, and pleasure in my Maker all wrapped in one. Biking: Mountain and Road. It's like running, but faster. Hiking: It's like running, but more vertically oriented. Photography: The way I take pictures is kind of how I live my life. I'm not that great at creating moments, but if I see something good I can capture it creatively and savor it.

I'm running again. Those of you who knew me five years ago, when I first had to give running up, know: This is a really big deal for me. But forget the runner I was five years ago, training for a marathon and beating my high school 5K PR. Nope,... Continue reading

I just finished my first-ever JV Fall Conference. This one was a bit less overwhelming than the Spring Conference, probably because I’m more than a week off the boat. 280 people. 13 countries. 1 tent. (We've outgrown the hotel meeting room) Worshiping together. Unlike the Spring Conference, which was a... Continue reading

I just received the most wonderful thing: a package from my family for my birthday. Among the many treasures in it were four sheets, front and back, covered in the “artwork” of my two-and-a-half year old niece, Jenna, with a note from my mother, Jenna’s grandma: "She worked so long... We spent six days in Cambridge, England. We performed at schools and hung out with a local choir that is similar to ours. We sang at a church. We wandered the streets of Cambridge and went punting on the Cam. It was really great. But you know that feeling you... Continue reading

I've always had fun mocking the English (this is Greg writing), mainly their accents. If I go too far with it I explain that I'm a quarter English and that gives me permision to have fun at "our" expense. This past two weeks Kori and I got to see for... Continue reading

Cambridge was a fantastic city, but the location of our accommodations were a bit inconvenient. The girls were five miles from the center, and the boys another mile beyond that. And the public transportation cost about £2.50 each. One way. Multiply this by 39 people, convert to Czech crowns and... Continue reading

Here's some ideas I have for the title of this post, which ideally will turn into a bi-weekly (or so) series: Thankful Thursdays (Sounds like it belongs in a fifties Sunday School magazine. Soooooo cheesy) Czeerful (Get it? Like "Czech"? "Czeerful"??? This might even be czeesier than the last one)... Continue reading

Imagine this: You have recently been married, but have yet to meet your husband’s huge, close-knit extended family. Then the opportunity comes: a 5-day family reunion at a nice mountain-side hotel. The turnout is good: 240 people have come from hundreds of miles. Bright smiles, tight hugs, and eager greetings... Continue reading

I tore the perforated sides of the little white envelope, tossing the strips in the trash as I unfold the familiar paper. My pay stub reported a healthy four figures deposited into my account. Not bad, really, for two weeks’ work teaching math to high school students. These by-weekly stubs... Continue reading

One of the best things we got at Mission Training International was terminology to help us talk about the cross-cultural experience. On the very first day they introduced us to was something that all of us missionaries-in-transition knew so well: the paradox of emotions. We took a cue from the... Continue reading

The table looks like it belongs in a kindergarten classroom: small papers with crayoned cars, trains, and simple stick figures, and full-sized sheets quartered into rough approximations of a park, a hospital, a house. We aren’t kindergartners, but as adult language learners, we are training ourselves to take on the... Continue reading

Katie, a coworker on the field, sold me a car two weeks ago for $8000. The transmission has just fallen out, costing me another $2000, and a friend tells me Katie may have known it was a problem. What am I to do about it? This is the role-play. Infinitely... Continue reading

The room is quiet, twenty people holding a collective breath. Leaning forward on folding chairs, watching the drama unfold on the stage in front of us, we wait for the answer to this question. To the left, Greg sits relaxed as if he’s simply engaging a conversation over coffee. To... Continue reading

“How did this get here?!” Brian seizes a seemingly inoffensive plant, wraps its long, whiplike stalk around his arm, and begins to pull. The few small green leaves that remain tremble and some fall off, but the plant remains staunchly rooted. Brian examines his trees We’re on Kathy’s Hill of... Continue reading

You don’t want to read this. Aren't they beautiful?? I think they take after their aunt... The internet is full of people enraptured with cute things, especially kittens, but also puppies and babies. And here’s another blog entry about babies, and they’re not even mine. But I can’t help it.... Continue reading

As perpetual tiredness has kept me in through many glorious fall afternoons, I am seized by a familiar frustration. I wrote about it last spring, and it is a good expression of this long, long lesson of learning to be still: I’m laying on a couch, as I have every... Continue reading

Four hundred and ninety-nine miles. That's how far it is from Fairbanks to Deadhorse. The road is mostly packed dirt and gravel, with 18-wheelers roaring along as if they own it, which, more or less, they do. The road was built along with the pipeline by private oil companies thirty-five... Continue reading

I just received a letter from a dear girl I met last summer at the Tabor English Camp. She has written to tell me that the troubles and searching of this last year have led her to God. “I got the present of God,” she wrote me. “I’m Christian. I... Continue reading
