Well, a weekend is concluding again and its been a while since I've sat down to this here blog. Where to start? At work, the other guy in my group left the company, leaving me with all the work to finish off. He was a good guy and did a great job on his stuff. My head is spinning trying to catch up on all the projects that he was working on and get them confirmed and move on. On top of it, I am still trying to understand the process and systems of the job, so I am a... Continue reading

Oh, there is a list of things a mile long that need to be done around the house. We still have unpacking and organizing to do...still need to hang pictures on the walls...still some furniture moving. But, it all takes a backseat to the kids soccer games and the Winterhawks. This weekend we were treated to back to back to back games on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday morning we headed to Sherwood for the kids soccer match...this was the first early morning match he had since joining the team. I forget the score, as it was a rout (the 3rd... That seems to be the predominant question from friends and colleagues as I bump into people I haven't seen in a while. The answer is usually...'still digging through the boxes and stuff.' But, upon reflection, yeah, I think we are getting settled in. This past week saw the Tai-Tai furiously organizing bathrooms, kitchen, living room and bedroom (still waiting for the kids to follow suit). So much so, that at one point last week, during a massive cleaning of the house, she exclaimed, 'I want my aiyee!' Well... Myself, its been about learning of my role and the expectations of... Slowly, we are getting moved in. Most boxes have been unpacked and the upstairs of our home is relatively organized and somewhat livable (I finally unloaded the boxes with my shoes last night). The downstairs, by contrast, is a disaster. Piles of books, furniture, stuff everywhere...and we won't even get into the garage yet (but at least I can fit my car in!). So, a few observations on this expat move... Far less emotional stress this time than last. It helps that I came back to a group and job that wanted and valued me. It also helped that we... Moving into the house has been a sea of papers and boxes...but it seems to be coming together, albeit slowly. The other day the moving company came and removed the mountains of paper and boxes we had stacked in our garage and side of our house...I can almost get my car into the garage again (with a little more organizing). There seems to be so much room in the garage now that we have the stacks of boxes out of there...although there is still a significant stack to go through yet. Tai-Tai has managed to get things put away in... Continue reading

Thank goodness for an understanding boss that has gone through the repat relocation hell that we are going through right now. He's pretty much given me the green light to take care of business this week and, man, have we needed it. Yesterday was TV day. Dish Network arrived as promised and installed a brand spanking new dish on the side of the house and we have programming upstairs and downstairs. Very cool set up with the HD box down by my big tv and a UHF remote for the old standard def tv upstairs (no box!). My tv has... Continue reading

It's been a couple days, hasn't it. And, believe me, enough has happened since the last post to share. Lets start with last Friday. Friday morning started with a quick pack up and exit from the lovely little apartment in Portlands Pearl district. It was a fun short stay in downtown Portland. Restaurants close by, shopping everywhere. We were able to enjoy our time a bit...while shuttling back and forth to our new house while all sorts of work was being completed on it prior to our move in. After checking out from the apartment, we headed to the house... Continue reading
