Flattr is a microdonation system.
Users are able to pay a small amount every month and then click Flattr buttons on sites to share out the money they paid in among those sites, kind of like an Internet tip jar.
(Paraphrased from Wikipedia)
Could be that it's currently more of a European thing... :-)
HUNTER is here.
Hunter is a short Sci-Fi story set in a dark and desperate world. It is just about 2500 words, which is about the length of a story you'd read in a magazine. I'm not really sure what the appropriate cost is, so I'm experimenting with the Pay What You Want model that seems to be working really we...
Check out this blog entry, it'll explain: http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/wwdnbackup/2009/12/the-2009-year-in-review-part-four.html
woke up in the rain and everyone turned over
The way I remember it, the last day of school was always the hottest day of the year, capping at least a week of warm and sunny weather that brought with it the promise of spending every day of our impending summer vacation by the pool or at the beach. I didn't care that my parochial school forc...
Love the ending, Wil! :-)
wil does the commodore hustle
I joined the cast of Loading Ready Run at the Child's Play Dinner last month for another episode of Commodore Hustle! It's long, but it's worth it. THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID! Ah, that joke never gets old.
For a variation, let me do this in my native language: Alles Gute zum Geburstag, Andrew! :-)
Happy Birthday, @RedPenOfDoom!
Today is my friend Andrew's birthday. I know Andrew because he read my blog a million years ago (in internet time) and saw that I was a fan of various Steve Jackson games. At the time, Andrew worked at SJGames on some projects you may have heard of, like Chez Geek, Munchkin, GURPS 4th Edition, a...

Wil, I think it is easier to get on iTunes in DRM-free plus format than you think!
I believe there are web labels that will handle most of it for you. E.g. there's a young french guitar player who goes by the name of "MattRach": he posted videos on YouTube and now has his tracks DRM-free on iTunes - world wide, if I'm not mistaken.
I'm sure something similar should work for you as well.
why i won't ever infect anything you buy from me with drm
Last week, I finished recording the audio version of The Happiest Days of Our Lives. I'm not sure what our release date is, but it's in the near future. Like the audio version of Just A Geek, it's a superannuated super-annotated version, with lots of asides and commentary. I think you're going t...

I always wished that you would do some web-video-series akin to what Felicia Day is doing with "The Guild", perhaps together with some of the ACME folks.
But of course, the risk that this could be a huge waste of time and energy is there. Personally. I'd think it's a small risk ;-) -- but it's a risk none the less.
and now, your daily dose of zombies
Think Geek has way, way, way too much fun with the Dismember Me Plush Zombies: When I see stuff like this, I am inspired to make silly short films like this of my own. Then I look at all the other stuff I have to do, and I'm a little sad that I can't. Then I remember how lucky I am that I get...

Have you ever thought of publishing something under a pseudonym? It might be easier to get objective feedback that way, and you even could start writing Star Trek or Star Wars fan fiction, without being attacked.
trudging through fog
In his blog today, Neil says: The best thing about writing fiction is that moment where the story catches fire and comes to life on the page, and suddenly it all makes sense and you know what it's about and why you're doing it and what these people are saying and doing, and you get to feel like ...

@Decibel: I just wanted to post the very same link! :-)
some happiest days items, and paypal frustrations
My head was pounding when I went to bed last night, and is still pounding as I write this, seven hours later. I had one of those nights where I couldn't get comfortable and woke up about once an hour, so I finally decided to just give in and get out of bed about an hour ago. I still have the hea...

Belated Happy Birthday wishes from Germany, Wil! :-)
happy birthday to me!
I have been absolutely overwhelmed with totally awesome birthday wishes from just about everyone I know, and just as many people who I don't know. Thank you! This trip around the Sun, my 35th 36th*, has started out better than I could have ever dreamed, and it keeps getting better. Now I'm goi...

Yay, another episode of RFB! I've honestly missed that!
Using iTunes 7 on WinXP, links and images just worked fine,
although only if you downloaded it completely first; open as URL didn't work for me.
As for CC music, here's a Bond-like song (more like an end-title song, less lounge-like): http://ccmixter.org/people/phusion/phusion_-_ophelias_symphony.mp3
Radio Free Burrito: Episode Nine
Inspired by Goldfinger (the movie, not the band) and alone and a little bored in an empty house while my family is away, I decided to do a special episode of Radio Free Burrito. This is entirely a music show, playing Exotica, Easy Listening, and Lounge Music from Comfort Stand Records, which i...

What a great speech. What a generous gesture. That was a much better read than I was expecting: well done, Wil!
Geek in Review: Gene Roddenberry: Boldly Going Where No One Had Gone Before
When I talked to my mom on Sunday morning, she asked me how the Hall of Fame induction went. "Good," I said. "It was better than I could have hoped." "Will you write about it, so your dad and I can experience what it was like to be there?" I smiled. I love it that she asked me to do that. Mom, t...

Wil, here's a question for you: if you're reading to escape this world, are you writing to escape this world as well? If no, why not?
As for going offline: yes, I look forward to sit in my garden and read a book in summer; it's a sure way that my cats will join me as well, which doubles the joy. :-)
give a hoot. read a book.
After finishing Monster Nation, I find myself in this joyful place, where I decide which book to pluck from the pile. Where will I go next? Into the past? Into the future? One thing is for sure, I'm tired of the present. All the nonfiction books I've accumulated over the last year, all the inves...

Since I got my Wii, it wasn't really hard to get my wife to play video games any more. She now evens grabs the controls from my hands, telling me something like "oh let me finish this for you." Get "Rayman Raving Rabbids", it might be a good starting title to go along with Wii Sports.
After that, I don't see any more problems with The Wife... ;-)
so i'm going to be the keynote speaker at PAX . . .
Back in February, I recounted the first time I met Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade at Comicon: I have always enjoyed Penny Arcade, because -- like pVp and Dork Tower -- it has characters I can care about and relate to while I'm laughing at myself, or them, or (usually) both. I talked to Gabe a...

What's wrong with Linkin Park?
the brass was phasing tunes I couldn’t place
Wilco's next album is titled Sky Blue Sky, and according to Rolling Stone, it's one of 50 must-hear albums (take that with a grain of salt: RS also put Linkin Park on the list): Its twelve songs are also a startling turnaround from the scarring distortion of Wilco's commercial breakthrough, 2002'...
