The timing on this is pretty pristine. I was just talking about this with a coworker last week, and he cited some of the same reasons for not going to everything over HTTPS that you discussed in your article.
That said, the site I'm developing on my own time is going to utilize external accounts so my visitors can log into their Google, Facebook, OpenId, etc., to post comments and the like.
