Just because your friend doesn't need the items today, that doesn't mean she won't need the shirts, shoes, gym clothes, etc. that the wonderfully generous next-door neighbor may give tomorrow.
Because it IS the next-door neighbor, your friend needs to tread lightly. These are the people who will pick up her mail, water her plants, check in if something seems off. In short, these are people she needs to develop a friendship with in order to have a more comfortable and secure home life. And handling friends' occasional quirks is a grown up skill we all need to master.
She needs to thank the neighbor for the clothes and the helmet. Then she should have her kid try on some of the jeans. The neighbor may have opened up a whole new fashion world for the boy, because really, what kid doesn't wear jeans? Anything that doesn't work for him can then go to a charity. And yes, SHE needs to take them there.
As for the neighbor asking for the "good" helmet back, suck it up. It may have been an awkward moment, but it's over.
Smile, be friendly and find the good in the generosity of the neighbor. Not everyone is blessed with next-door neighbors who are friendly and helpful.
