In his pre-conference session Craig Weiss offered the opinion that e-learning hasn't developed all that much compared to the advances in technology over the past twenty years. Perhaps that's because educational institutions are rather conservative but from the exhibition it's at least in part because the offerings themselves are more evolutionary than revolutionary in their outlook. The keynotes however struck a more innovative note, the most interesting for me was by Viktor Mayer-Schönberger on "Big Data". Here are some of the main points from a two day conference organized by the Finnish Board of Education on ILT: OPH virtuaalipäivät 2012 Day 1: Keynotes The conference was opened by Aulis Pitkälä the Director General of the Finnish National Board of Education who emphasized that it is a student’s right to have access to ICT during study. The current situation is that ICT is seen too much as teacher tool rather than a student tool. He was also worried about the ICT skills of teachers, with not enough training. Ideas from the keynote speakers On Thursday 1st December Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes asked the question "Why haven’t classrooms changed more?". It was taken as read that change is needed. Her proposal came in three main points: 1. Digital literacy needs to be central to the curriculum. 2. Full range of central funding and support. 3. Digital literacy needs to engage all.
