I'm almost ashamed to admit I haven't done any real traveling since acquiring my iPod or iPhone. This month's trip to the Midwest will be the first real travel test. To tell the truth, I'm a little nervous, but excited too! The first big difference I noticed was in my... Continue reading

I'm addicted to Twitter. I freely admit microblogging for fictional characters has become the focus of my writing life. Three of my most popular role-playing identities have more than 1,000 followers each. That's a lot of @s to keep track of! Sure, you could memorize and type in the names... Continue reading

Do depictions of violence, whether literary, artistic or political contribute to real life violence? It's a question that is probably as old as art, writing and assembly, itself. In all that time, however, we have not come up with a suitable answer. Nor are we likely too. It is a... Continue reading

Ebooks sell. In fact, Mediabistro reports that the top 6 titles on USA Today's best seller list have sold more often as ebooks than as regular books. This is important because it means ebooks are a viable revenue stream for publishers and authors. Certainly not every title published is going... Continue reading

The first Monday of a brand new year! It like cracking open the latest work of your favorite author. That new book smell rises to greet you. Anticipation and excitement fill the air. You can't wait to jump into it. There are no guarantees you'll like the story or that... Continue reading

There have been times during 2010 when I seriously wondered if I was developing a multiple personality disorder. It wasn't just the number of fictional characters I write about or "play" on twitter. It was also the various "real mes" that exist on a variety of social and professional networking... Continue reading

I've been struggling for quite awhile about what to do with a writers' group I founded a couple of years ago. I thought I had a plan, when I founded the group, but, as so often happens, life stepped in and shook things up. Now I am left without a... Continue reading

The Naming of Characters is a difficult matter. It isn't a process one can easily tame. The right ones reveal and ultimately flatter, The character who goes by their name. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone Continue reading

Most of my first drafts, be they blogs or books, are being written on my iPod these days. Some people think that is strange, pointing out it is slower than typing and that, as a result, I write less. In my case, at least that isn't true. I am one... Continue reading

Sometimes I feel like I am spending my life staring at screens. The addition of the iPod has only made the sensation worse. Now, instead of leaving the screens behind when I walk or ride or even bathe, I bring them along. My eyes aren't quite as glued to them... Continue reading

Gone are the days of sitting in courtrooms taking copious notes then running to the phone to file the story as soon as court is in recess. Journalists on the crime or legal beat will be able to file their stories by Twitter if the UK trial of WikiLeaks founder... Continue reading

What do you know? I was ahead of a curve, writing about Apple and Twitter. Or maybe that's behind it, since I didn't fall for the iPad when it came out earlier this year and went the iPod route rather than the iPhone route. In any event, the number of... Continue reading

A photographic memory would really come in handy about now. I'm adjusting to the nuances of blogging and creative writing on the iPod (have you seen some of my character blogs) including finding and adding images but more research based writing continues to elude me. This is not good news.... Continue reading

The ebook is here to stay. Not only that, ebooks are on the brink of becoming mainstream. Don't believe it? Look no further than today's announcement that Google is opening a ebookstore. An event so significant it was reported and opined on by no less then the esteemed bible of... Continue reading

Sometimes I hate my friends. Really. I do. They mean well but they do the dumbest things. Like introducing me to the online crossword-type game Words with Friends (think Scrabble without the Hasbro endorsement). Now I am totally addicted to it. This is not an entirely unexpected situation. I am... Continue reading

I take copies of work I have created and emails with me. I always have it written into my contracts that I get 3 copies of my work (1 paper, 1 digital draft and 1 production version). I also bcc all my emails to a third account so I have them should I need them. Everything else I leave with the company. Also I should mention that I only have "work related materials on a "company" company computer. Anything and everything on my personal devices, be they laptop, thumb drive, iPod or cell phone is my property and the company has not right to it. Again that's written in my contract. I should probably mention that I am a freelancer/independent contractor not a permanent full-time employee. Continue reading
