I think one important disconnect that occurs in the absence of "face time" is that workers become socially disconnected from the many people with various talents and temperments necessary to make a company organization flourish. Working from one's personally selected "ivory tower" makes "team" building far more challenging.
I'm not advocating strict adherence to traditional office bound work or a field of Dilbert cubicles, but I am saying that those who have jobs that permit a "floating" workspace need to spend enough time among those who must work in within the corporate "fortress" to be able to connect and relate to their roles, to understand the value of their contribution and the acceptance of structure and sacrifice of personal time they must make to assure the company's success.
