Excellent post and thanks for sharing Ellen Goodman's column. I teach at a college and I reference the movie Groundhog Day as a way to illustrate "small wins." We have to take pleasure in the ordinary and celebrate. Thanks
Happy Groundhog Day: Lessons from the Movie - We Keep Living the Same Day Over & Over Again Until We Get It Right!
Making the best of what we have....is not second best. It is rather, a demand for active engagement in caring for what and whom we value. That is what's touching about Groundhog Day. -Ellen Goodman- (**Yes, this is a repeat post from 2/2/08 & yes, I've linked to this before--but it'...
Drew--This post really resonated with me. I think it is great advice. But a name seems like such a significant decision--similar to naming a kid! I have noticed that many people seem to use their name and associates which does not tell the public what their business does. So I agree with you and as always, I appreciate the great advice you share in blogs. Jann
Marketing tip #30: Let your business name do its job
I have a friend who is launching her own business. As she's wrestled with names for the company, she started out very pragmatic -- her last name and a descriptive word that would tell prospects what she sells. But she's not crazy about her last name and wanted something more creative. So eve...

You should read about how art is changing the landscape and attitude of people in Des Moines. This weekend was the ribbon cutting for the new sculpture park and people have been crawling like ants around downtown. Art makes life interesting and much more fun. Mrs. Conover had it figured out. What is she doing now? Is she still teaching? Thanks

Are you crazy? Maybe you should be.
Innovation and creativity are supposed to be the key to growth. But how can people be creative in this kind of economic environment where people are being let go left and right. If we are to innovate our way out of this mess, how are we going to do it when people are fearful and scared to take...
It sounds as if they are really healthy people who have figured “it” out. Based on what I have read and studied, the key is to keep learning, growing, actively involved, and connected. They are doing that and that is great! Thanks

Rethinking Retirement
Image by ppdigital via Flickr I am on a mission to retire the word "retirement." What does it mean to retire something? According to the dictionary, it means "withdrawn, reserved, secluded, quiet ..." Is this how we are going to see ourselves when we are ready to leave our careers? I don't ...
Thanks Ashley for reading. I think the key word is “grow.” As long as we keep growing through learning, there is no end to what we can learn and to what we can become. Good thoughts on a beautiful day.

What is a Grownup?
Since I have been focused on positive aging or what I like to call sage-ing, one of my favorite magazines is AARP. I read it from cover to cover because it is full of great information to keep us thinking, creating, dreaming, learning. Image via Wikipedia One article was on how to know if y...
Katlyn—Thanks for sharing your experiences. Now is all that matters. Why does that sound so simple, but seem so difficult to remember or practice?

More about Yoga and Leadership
Image by Getty Images via Daylife This summer I have going to "yoga in the park" with about 100-250+ people. This free one hour of outside yoga has been sponsored by The Parks and Recreation Department and certainly has been well received. It has been a wonderful sense of community to be with...
Absolutely Amanda. It sounds as if you have a good role model. You can learn a lot from him. Thanks for reading.

Chrys—What an interesting insight about yelling FIRE vs. RAPE! That is fascinating and I will remember it. Remind me to tell the story about when I yelled HELP in a store. Congratulations on certification in CPR. That is smart. Thanks for reading. Jann

What would you do?
My definition of leader is being the best person you can be. If this is the case, it seems logical that others would follow and you would know when to follow and not always lead. Compassion is also critical for leaders and now is as good as time as any to take compassion to a higher level. We...
Loved the post Drew. I am afraid, but getting closer to pulling the trigger, jumping off the cliff, and going after a dream. We were singing a hymn in church on Sunday that had the verse--let courage be our friend and let wisdom be our guide and I could not stop thinking--What am I afraid of? Just go for it. Too much thinking ...
Be not afraid
I spent the day on Friday at the Maximum Impact Simulcast, listening to the likes of Tony Blair and John C. Maxwell talk about leadership and courage. It’s inspiring. It makes us want to be our best self. Who doesn’t want to be seen as an amazing leader? I think it’s natural after spending ...
