awesome job & welcome back! woohoo!
First trail run
I've lived by the Presidio for 6 years, which is full of great trails... and yes, I finally decided to get my butt in gear and actually run on them. I've resisted it because -- whaaah -- it's hilly and hard. Buck up, buttercup. My mantra this year is "durability" and that means building strength...
Glad you're getting it checked out! You're gonna crush Kaiser! 1 comment on the holding off swimming. I don't think it would hurt to get wet, just do a light session. No timing, just a buoy and casual speed. You'll get a sense pretty quickly whether the shoulder will dig it or not. I got in the water 11 days after the hernia surgery. The trick is just to listen to your body and not overdo it. It may, in fact, help more than it may hurt. :)
On becoming a runner
I finally have an answer on what's going on with my shoulder (which is still quite painful.) My doctor said that the MRI revealed a partial tear in one of the tendons in my rotator cuff, plus a bone bruise. He also said that partial tears are a bit of a mystery... ie. they really have no idea if...
Uggh. I'm so sorry Jenn. Sounds like we're having similar late summers. I raced the Chicago Triathlon w/ a sinus infection, chest cold and what turned out to be an inguinal hernia (having surgery tomorrow). Pretty much scratching the rest of the season. Thinking about Hawaii 70.3 again though. You considering a repeat appearance? Rest well and get better.

A long overdue update
I haven't posted in ages, but I don't really have much to write about now that I busted up my shoulder! Haven't been able to swim or run for a month. The story in a nutshell: I was 10 miles into the Marin metric century when I had the bright idea to remove my arm warmers without stopping my bike...
I'm not sure it's the case for you but I have found that sometimes I change my pedal stroke and hammer or not releasing on the up-stroke. I keep constant pressure on the balls of my feet and my big toes. I had this for the first 1/2 of Hawaii 70.3. My big toes were phasing in and out of going numb versus feeling like the were on fire when I got circulation back into them. I also realized in retrospect that I strapped my shoes on too tightly. Maybe that...
The thing that has a massive impact on my glutes is saddle position. I've found that I have less tightness when I ride in proper position way up on the hozzle of the saddle and fully resting on my elbows in aero. Anything else sends full jabs of agony at distance. It's painful to ride in the upfront position, but I'll take taint pain over muscle pain any day (hello chamois butter :).
Monterey ride
The day after I got home from Hawaii, I turned around and left for Monterey, CA for a conference. I brought my bike and was looking forward to an easy recovery ride in one of the most gorgeous places on the coast. It turned out to be chilly and foggy, but still so enjoyable... I rode a 33-mile o...
Congrats on a great race Jenn! The run was SUCH a soul-crusher! Hope you do it again next year. I certainly want to go back. That course and I have a score to settle ;)
IM 70.3 Hawaii (Honu) race report
Awesome, my first 70.3 distance on the books! I now know I need a LOT more run training... I finished 50 minutes later than my goal time, and most of that was due to my run totally falling apart after mile 9. The good news is that I loved the experience and I've set myself up for a rockin' good ...
