Bioidentical Hormones Prevent Osteoarthritis
Bioidentical Hormones Prevent Osteoarthritis by Jeffrey Dach MD. Hormonal Decline Leads to Degenerative Disease, One of the basic concepts of "Anti-Aging Medicine" is that hormonal decline leads to the onset of degenerative diseases. On the top on the list is degenerative osteoarthritis, a common form of progressive joint destruction from years of wear and tear. Recent medical research shows that menopausal estrogen deficiency is a causative factor in developing degeneration of the joints. Anti-Aging Medicine accepts the idea that hormonal replacement is beneficial for preventing the various degenerative diseases of aging, such as the joint degeneration of osteo-arthritis. Bioidentical Hormone Supplementation not only reduces risk for developing degenerative disease, it also reduces over-all mortality. Continue reading

Diet Sodas, Aspartame and Stroke by Jeffrey Dach MD
Diet Sodas, Aspartame, Migraine, Seizures, Brain Tumors and Stroke by Jeffrey Dach MD. A good friend avidly consumes two or three cans a day of Diet Coke. He recently suffered a stroke-like event with loss of speech. Thankfully he quicky recovered with return of function. His friends and family are worried and have urged him to cut out the diet sodas, yet he remains oblivious and continues his addictive behavior. A new study presented at the 2011 American Stroke Association Conference showed daily diet soda consumption had a 61 percent higher risk of stroke. Diet sodas contain aspartame, a questionable food additive that should be avoided. Aspartame is a neuro-stimulant which provokes migraine headaches and potentiates epileptic seizures in animal studies. Dr. Olney says aspartame consumption explains the increased incidence of brain tumors in the population. Animal studies show an exceedingly high incidence of brain tumors in aspartame-fed rats compared to no brain tumors in concurrent controls. A 2005 study by Italian researcher Morando Soffritti found aspartame to have carcinogenic potential in animal studies.

The Safety of Bioidentical Hormones by Jeffrey Dach MD
Are Women's Bio-identical hormones safe? Bio-identical hormones exist naturally in the human body, so it is axiomatic that these are safe. However, we are interested in a slightly different question. What is the safety of bio-identical hormones as routinely used in medical practice? Let's try to answer this question.

Why Natural Thyroid is Better than Synthetic by Jeffrey Dach MD
Why Natural Thyroid is Better than Synthetic by Jeffrey Dach MD. We use exclusively natural thyroid in our office, and a few times every day, I find myself explaining why natural thyroid is superior to Synthroid. In this article, we will explain why natural thyroid tablets are better than synthetic T4 only tablets, also called Synthroid. What is Synthroid? What is in it? Synthroid contains Thyroxine also called T4,which is identical hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Levothyroxine is the generic form of Synthroid. Common brand names include Thyrax, Euthyrox, Levaxin, L-thyroxine, Eltroxin and Thyrax Duotab in Europe; Thyrox in South Asia; Eutirox, Levoxyl and Synthroid in North America. Strictly speaking, Synthroid is bio-identical, even though it is synthetic. What is in Natural Thyroid? Natural Thyroid pills are made from desiccated porcine (pig) thyroid glands which contain Thyroxine (T4), T3, T2, T1 and Calcitonin. As of 2005, 10 million people in the U.S. take thyroxine. When one considered that Abbott's Synthroid is the most popular form of thyroxine, and the second-most prescribed drug in the U.S., one starts to understand the financial rivalry between Synthroid and natural thyroid competitors. What Does Mainstream Medicine Say ? Here is a typical statement by Mainstream Medicine found on a popular medical information web site called medicine.net. Armour is a natural desiccated porcine thyroid preparation containing T1, T2, T3, T4 and calcitonin. Synthroid contains only T4. Continue reading

The Thyroid Nodule Epidemic by Jeffrey Dach MD
A 36 Year Old Female With Hypothyroidism After Thyroidectomy For Thyroid Cancer. Lisa, a 36 year old model and actress, arrived in my office and told me her story. Ever since her thyroidectomy for cancer, she has had symptoms of severe fatigue, muscle pain, hair loss, and dry skin. The small dose of Synthroid prescribed by her endocrinologist doesn't seem to be helping. Four years ago, her family doctor palpated her thyroid gland, thought he felt a nodule and sent her for thyroid ultrasound, "just to be sure". The thyroid ultrasound images showed a small nodule about 9 mm in size, and the doctors recommended ultrasound guided needle biopsy, "just to be sure". About a week after the biopsy, the pathology report came back with a diagnosis of "papillary carcinoma of the thyroid". As you can imagine, Lisa was very upset when the doctor informed her she had cancer. "Not to worry", said her doctor,"You have an excellent prognosis and a high likelihood for cure after surgery followed by radioactive Iodine treatment." Grateful that she had a treatable cancer with a good prognosis, Lisa underwent the surgery and radiation. Since the surgery completely removed her thyroid gland, she required thyroid medication every day. She also needed periodic screening tests to check for cancer recurrence. Continue reading

Selenium for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis by Jeffrey Dach MD
Selenium for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis by Jeffrey Dach MD. Susan has Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune thyroid disorder causing fatigue, puffy face and muscle weakness. For the past year, she had been under the care of other doctors who started thyroid medication (Synthroid), and tested her thyroid antibody levels. The disturbing thing was that her antibodies kept climbing higher on each follow up lab test. The doctors had no explanation, so she asked me if there was something else that could be done. As it turns out, there is a trace mineral called selenium that plays an important role in thyroid biochemistry. Selenium deficiency has been implicated in the etiology of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and selenium supplementation has been found beneficial.

Honest Medicine by Julia Schopick
Honest Medicine by Julia Schopick. Julia Schopick's book focuses on four highly successful treatments ignored by mainstream medicine. The first is Silverlon, a silver impregnated mesh used to heal skin compromised by repeated surgeries and radiation treatments. The second is Alpha Lipoic Acid for chronic liver disease, the third is the Ketogenic Diet for seizure disorder, and the fourth is Low Dose Naltrexone. As a gifted medical writer, Julia brings each topic alive with the testimony of patients, their doctors, and family members.

Lexapro for Hot Flashes ?
This new JAMA study by Ellen W Freeman shows that Lexapro is "marginally" more effective than placebo for Hot Flashes. This is laughable. Surely you must be joking? Jeffrey Dach on Marshall and Warren Quacks Doctors?
Jeffrey Dach on Marshall and Warren Quacks Doctors? For years Marshall and Warren were called quacks because they said that gastric ulcers were caused by an infection. Nobody believed them. Finally in 2005, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. So in reality, they were great doctors who had made a great discovery and not quacks after all. from Jeffrey Dach Continue reading

There is really no need for genetic engineering to activate telomerase as was done in the Depinho mouse model. There is about 20 years of research on Telomere activation. There are two receptors for estrogen on the TERT gene which controls this process. Whether you happen to be a human being or a mouse, the best way to increase telomerase activity, lengthen the telomeres and reverse aging is with the human bioidentical hormone, 17-Beta-Estradiol, also known as estrogen. In 1999, Kyo demonstrated that 17-Beta-Estradiol activates telomerase via direct and indirect effects on the hTERT promoter region. This was confirmed in 2000 by Silvia Misiti and again in 2009 by Rodrigo T. Calado from the NIH A recent December 2010 study from Imanishi from Japan showed that 17-Beta-Estradiol (estrogen) augments telomerase activity, thereby accelerating recovery after injury and reducing the effects of aging (reducing senescence). If this isn't a description of anti-aging effects, I don't know what is.
