i've got one more silver dollar
I'm taking a break from my online traffic school (shorter traffic school: Don't be a dick, and slow the fuck down). I got a ticket recently when I misunderstood some confusing lane lines in Burbank. I thought they were telling me I could turn right from the two right-most lanes, but the friendly...
Not only do I (also) get the 100 points for the Crispin Glover reference, I get an extra 100 points for laughing boisterously at the reference!
Memories of the Futurecast Episode Fourteen: Datalore
Holy crap! It's time for Memories of the Futurecast. Memories of the Future, Volume One, covers the first 13 episodes of TNG, so, starting at the beginning and working my way through the book, I picked one chapter a week and performed an excerpt for you. It was mostly from the synopses, which is...
Speaking of a little black book with your poems in it, did you realize that Nov. 30 was the 30th anniversary of the release of "The Wall"? Or was that pure coincidence?
Memories of the Futurecast Episode 13: The [Worst | Best]. Episode. Ever.
Holy crap! It's time for Memories of the Futurecast. Memories of the Future, Volume One, covers the first 13 episodes of TNG, so each week, I'm choosing something from one episode, and performing an excerpt for you. It will mostly be from the synopses, which is where I think the real humor of th...
Two things.
First, I haven’t watched these episodes in years, so I really don’t know of what I write, but here is my take on the Wesley thing. Wesley is special. The Traveler told us this, but Wesley doesn’t know it yet. He’s just a 14-year-old kid who is trying to deal with having a mind that is unlike one possessed by any other 14-year-old. And as a 14-year-old, he isn’t mature about it. He’s not supposed to be; that would make him a god-like character. Insufferabilty is sometimes a trait associated with prodigies, and as such, Wesley is acting completely normal relative to his situation. At least, this is what I think the writers might have been going for.
Second, you’ve analyzed how this episode may be the point at which people really started to dislike your character, and by extension you. Flash forward to 2009, and you are a respected author, a beloved blogger, the darling of fark.com and Bad Astronomer Phil Plait has a man-crush on you. I’d be curious to hear what the catalyst was that turned everything around. Or was it gradual? (forgive me if this has been covered in one of your books. Just point me in the right direction and I’ll rectify my ignorance).

The next Mark Hamill, eh? Wouldn't it be great if they asked you to do voices for Metalocalypse? That would be . . . brutal!
in which wil talks to trekmovie dot com
I talked to Trekmovie.com about my trip to Phoenix Comicon this weekend. It's a pretty comprehensive interview, and they split it into two parts. Part one is up today: TrekMovie.com: Well you and Brent [Spiner] and Marina [Sirtis] have a joint appearance the Phoenix Comic Con, any thoughts abou...
Star Wars, yada yada yada. I want to know what that piece of electronic equipment is on the dresser in the "Headphones" picture. And which album with a gatefold sleeve is on the wall behind that kid.
There's more than one type of geek in this world!
growing up star wars
I'm from the Star Wars generation. I was the perfect age when the original movie came out, and Star Wars toys and merchandise absolutely defined my childhood. I'll never forgive George Lucas for taking one of the most important parts of my childhood and forcing me to watch while he took a giant ...

in which wil connects the dots
I was talking with Andrew last night about the Monolith Press editorial calendar for 2009. As we planned out our release and drop dead dates, the subject turned to the fiction project I wanted to do in 2008, but never finished. "The plan is to [REDACTED]," I said, "but I don't know which one I'l...
Once I was in a Pizza Hut with a guy from work. We were looking at the selections on the CD jukebox, when we both noticed "What's Up Dog." Without a word, we looked at each other with raised eyebrows, fed a dollar into the machine, punched in that song, and quietly went back to our table. When "Dad I'm In Jail" came on, the entire restaurant stopped eating mid-bite with shocked looks on their faces. We just whistled innocently.
I LIKE IT HERE IT'S NICE
Because, as I've said before, if you can't do random silly shit like this with your blog, why have a blog in the first place?

The three videos that specifically blew me away were:
In Bloom - Nirvana
Cherish - Madonna
Garden of Eden - Guns 'n' Roses
Of course, the night that I saw these three videos was one of the two times in my life that I took shrooms. But they were *amazing!*

i don't know what i'm to say, i'll say it anyway
If you are of a certain age, there are probably three seminal music videos that blew your mind at one point in your life: Money for Nothing, You Might Think, and Take on Me . (Sigh. Okay, fine, and the extended version of Thriller. At least I'll admit it. Shut up.) Anyway, my friend Jun (who is...

My superpower would be the ability to astrally project myself into the passenger seat of *that* car so I could tell the driver exactly why he/she is an idiot who should give up driving as a favor to society.
great moments in instant messaging
Any geek can tell you what superpower they'd want to have. We rarely have to think about it, because most of us gave the question a lot of time and careful consideration when we weren't talking to girls during our youth. Earlier tonight, the subject came up in an IM conversation with my friend R...

Yeah, the painting is nice and all that, but what a cool Fark shirt you have on!
evil and awesome (but mostly awesome)
Way back in April, John Scalzi wrote on his blog: Arrangements have been made. Wheels set into motion. At this point, it is inevitable. Unavoidable. Implacable would not be too strong a word. What has begun? I cannot tell you. Suffice to say it is evil. And yet awesome, in its way. And it ...

WAIT! I GOT IT!! Imagine - Wesley is a Star Fleet captain chasing after the most wanted man in the universe - Zaphod Beeblebrox!
Think of the possibilities!

It's been a long time since I've read a "Star Trek: TNG" novel, but I do remember one which takes place in the future and where Wesley C. is a captain. So there already exists a sanctioned universe where this series could take place.

Regarding mini-DV tape. If you don't mind paying three times as much for the blank tape, they do make an 80-minute mini-DV tape, which should cover the time of your talks. If you go with 60-minute mini-DV tapes and record in LP mode, you'll save money on tape stock but you'll have a problem. Mini-DV tapes recorded in LP mode are usually only playable on the camcorder that recorded the tape, due to slight differences in head alignment. When the camcorder you buy breaks (not "if," "when"), you might not be able to play your tapes without all kinds of drop outs and other defects.
On another subject, when you are taping one of your talks, if you are running on battery power, make sure that your flip-out screen is flipped in to conserve power.

Dear Lazy Web: Video Cameras?
Dear Lazy Web: I'm thinking about getting an inexpensive (<$300) (Let's go $400-$450. I guess <$300 isn't realistic for the features I want) small video camera to take with me on all my Geek Tour stops this summer, starting with Mysterious Galaxy and the Stone World Bistro this weekend. I haven'...

So, was it Yes West or Yes East?
Personally, the more incongruous the sequence, the happier I am with shuffle mode. Give me John Zorn's Naked City, followed by The 5th Dimension, followed by The Residents, followed by The Rutles, and I'm a happy boy!

In the spirit of Cat vs. Monkey . . . Me: iTunes, play whatever you want on random. iTunes: Cool! Have some Isaac Hayes, followed by Yes! Me: Maybe we need to talk about this... iTunes: Hey, jerk, it was in YOUR library. Don't blame me for getting creative. Me: Let's never fight again. iTune...
