I didn't have any paper with a small grid, so I just created it with the cells of an Excel spreadsheet (and coloured in the cells with the program).
My Cross-Stitch Hoopoe
I adore this cute little bird, and see it infrequently enough that it's quite magic when one appears on the grass near the gym, or the lamp post at the garden. When I see its little striped wings, mohawk and long hummingbird-like beak, it makes me happy. So I made one in cross-stitch. I found a ...
Neat! These were the prettiest sugar packets ever
I Liked These Colourful Sugar Packets From The Neighbourhood Lebanese Cafe
A plate each of fattoush, hummus that might have actually been a baba ganouj and some stuffed lamb kibbeh, washed down with ice-cold mint lemonade. I snagged these sugar packets that came with our tea because I thought they were so pretty.
:)
Garden in the Desert
We were looking for an adventure this weekend, something we hadn't seen before that wouldn't be too crazy in the heat that has now descended on Dubai. Should we hang out at the galleries in Al Quoz? Closed on Fridays. Should we roadtrip to see that crazy circular building in Abu Dhabi? Too long ...
I didn't even see the chicks until we were right there and I was taking the photo, neat
Peacocks Roaming Around The City
Finally got a photo of one of my favourite, "only in Dubai" scenes: the beautiful peacocks that stroll around the shrubs near DIFC, right on the side of the road, just hanging out. I'd never seen them with little chicks either. James slowed the car, and checked that there were no maniacs on our ...
Yes indeed, doing my best not to crack up. :)
There were other shots in the series where I was laughing away.
Dubai Diaries, Month 30 (April 2013)
April is a month of transitions around here. The weather starts to warm up to the point of no longer being comfortable outside. Summer hibernation mode starts to kick in, though we also take full advantage of the last nights of nice weather with long walks and dinner outside at Bu Qtair. Running...
Almost like being back in the NY office :)
New Desk View
Not bad! Burj al Arab out one window... ...Burj Khalifa out the other. Meydan racetrack and Zaabeel palace. Big views, quite nice!
Me too, I like when they're chatty (and if not, I can just get a few pages of my book read).
Morning Taxi Conversations
I carry my book with me in the morning, reading a few pages in the elevator on the way down to the lobby and then keeping my head in the pages as I walk up the driveway to hail a taxi. I have been reading such excellent books this year, incredible stories about incredible places, and I love th...
Me too, they have a toy-like or antique quality that I really like.
Pinhole Camera in Istanbul
I took the pinhole camera with its latest roll of film on our trip to Turkey. Now that I'm on my 3rd time through with this little camera, I feel far less precious about it and don't mind sticking it in the pocket of my purse in case I see something neat to capture. It's just so much fun to hand...
Yes, I will definitely be packing my running shoes for nicer weather!
Thoughts at Week 28 of Running
Before moving to Dubai, I had established a steady running routine where I got up every morning for a four mile route, rain or shine, summer or winter. In the summer, I set my alarm for 5 to beat the heat, and was at my desk in NYC by 8 with my bowl of yogurt and granola. And several weekends ...
Yes, it is a really lovely city! The Hagia Sophia is one of the biggest tourist attractions, a beautiful old old work of incredible architecture. And yes, always nice to have a catch-up with Fred, he is doing well
Favourite Things to Do in Istanbul
If you're going to Istanbul, pack your best walking shoes because it is an excellent city for exploring on foot. There are beautiful quiet neighbourhoods and sidestreets, Parisian-style roads with cafes, steep steep steep climbs a la San Francisco, and bridges with expansive views of the t...
So, from the perspective of this photo, the Burj Khalifa is to the left and the main highway is behind
The Cheese Grater
Shorter than most towering skyscrapers, this one still has a unique exterior that traps cooler air between the concrete Swiss cheese part and the interior.
You used to be able to see it from our balcony before the new buildings grew too tall. It's in Business Bay, an area full of construction right now

Nice, the desert landscape can be quite beautiful!
Bougainvillea
:) Nice! Thanks mom!!
Evening on the Creek
We always park in the same place when we head to the Creek for a walk and an abra ride because it's full of empty spots and a close enough distance to the action. But on Friday, we realized that we only ever come to the Creek during the morning or early afternoon, and that on this evening the pa...
No painting, I just saw this in the art dept at work and really liked the fan of colours
More Bright Colours
Nice! Yes the photos turned out really nicely
Pinhole Camera Results Take Two
Last summer, we built a pinhole camera from a kit and then had some fun results from the first roll of film that we shot, a set of b+w shots of things around Dubai. Round 2, a colour roll of film, with some neat antique-y results. Took some at James' grandparents' place and took a bunch of photo...
Very beautiful! I loved the camels and the oryx the best
Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
One of the items on my Dubai Wishlist has been to see an Arabian Oryx. We've seen photos of the elegant antelope-like animal with its two long spiral horns, but hadn't seen one in person on our days away from the city. The only way to definitely spot these animals is on a desert tour and so when...
Nice! It is always a favourite area to explore, a million things to see
Dubai Creek Afternoon
The first impressions that people frequently have when they visit Dubai are ones of glitz, cleanliness, branding, construction and crazy fancy cars. And then you get to the Creek, with its population of Asian immigrants, unique storefronts set-up to serve the day-to-day needs of these folks, and...
:) Nice!
Hooray!
I kept trying to block the title with my hand so that I could read it while I was sitting in a taxi or walking to the metro station, and finally decided to just tape the paper over it. :)
Dubai Diaries, Month 28 (February 2013)
In a blink, February 2013 has come and gone. We've both been super busy at work throughout 2013, long hours and lots to do. I still maintain my nice morning routine with a daily dose of Vitamin Run followed by a massive mug of tea before I head into the office. And one nice change to the work ...
Yeah, we couldn't figure out if the crown is the final touch on the building, or if that's the way the engineers are building the twistiness while it's still under construction. Near our place, there are some new buildings that have NYC watertank-style "crowns," it's neat.
A Ribbon of Sodium on the Skyline: Infinity Tower
I saw a photo of this beautiful twist of metal somewhere and when I saw that it was in Dubai, I knew we had to go on a hunt to find it. Early on a weekend morning, we drove southwest on Sheikh Zayed Road towards the Marina and we had a long walk on the False Creek-like seawalk, where people were...
Let's see what happens; I planted red pepper seeds before and they got to this "shoot" phase but nothing ever happened beyond that. Go chili go
Garden Update
After a year full of blooms, the petunia has finally decided to take a nap. In the meantime, I've added a few other petunias to keep it company. Meanwhile, there was a Mexican restaurant in London that had a basket of matchbooks at the host stand but instead of matches, there were five cardboar...
Yes, we hadn't seen it before either, it's probably taken shape in the last year.

Took Some Photos of the View This Week
And now we're back!
Dubai Diaries, Month 27 (January 2013)
Well hello there! After a work trip to London, let's get back into the posts with my Dubai Diaries for January. 2013 began with one of my busiest and craziest months at work ever. I don't talk work here, but let me just say once again: it was CRAZY. Part-way through the month, we had a weeken...
