Hey there! Long time no see. I've been away for a while and working on the most incredible project ever... She's tiny and sweet and fun and makes me want to sing! I hope to begin posting on this blog regularly again - now that the Little One is no longer a newborn. Thanks for waiting for me to return! Continue reading

Hey Judy--I STILL haven't finished my Art & Soul projects, but have been doing lots of collaging like Sally Jean taught us. What an amazingly carefree way of making beautiful backgrounds! Have you seen Glenny's Art & Soul blog? She posted a bunch of pictures from the Hampton retreat, and I'm pretty sure that there is a picture of you in Stephanie Lee's class there. Check it out. Happy crafting!
Summer has begun, and I'm planted in a chair at the seaside with my hubby. Even here--er, ESPECIALLY here--I'm inspired to grab paint and brushes. The sun, sand, waves, and peace & quiet make me long to do something creative. I've broken the "no Internet while we're on vacation" rule to post these pictures, but wanted to share the good vibes with you! This is the view of the beach from the cottage we've rented--yeah, now you can see why I'm so inspired! I dragged my poor hubby off of the beach to go buy paints and a sketch book... Continue reading

Hey Amanda--You're right! Maybe we can convince Mom to start knitting big girl sweaters rather than baby outfits. I'll provide the buttons. = )
It was a lazy and snowy weekend here in Virginia. My husband built a rip-roaring fire for us and we spent Saturday afternoon watching movies and snowflakes falling. (Did anyone else cry when they watched "Up"? What a sweet movie, but I needed to keep the tissues close!) It was a perfect way to rest up for the new week and when I returned to my studio yesterday, my mind was clear and my hands were ready to work. I ended up with two projects going at once. (Click this image to see more photos of this work in progress.)... Continue reading

Standing in front of an audience or wearing my pride on my sleeve--are not things I'm comfortable doing. But as an artist, I'm learning that it's important to take a bow every once in a while. Continue reading

Yay, Carolyn!! Don't you love days when you wake up and manage to do things the right way as soon as you get out of bed?!! It quiets that inner critic before she gets a chance to say anything mean to you AND you get to give yourself a big pat on the back! Happy smithing!
Here's an affirmation that most of us can use. There are those things that we do over & over again even though we know they don't get us closer to our goals. Sometimes it helps to have a reminder that once we let go we'll be on our way and so much happier. Continue reading

Here's one more of my affirmations. Be. Do. Have. I borrowed this one from artist coach Christine Kane. Even though the success of a business is measured in monetary terms, the rewards that really keep me fired up are rewards for the heart--like the great feeling I get when I make personal connections with others through art, or the personal satisfaction I feel when I master a new technique, or even the swell of pride I experience when I finish making a piece that I think is really beautiful. So when I repeat this particular affirmation to myself those are... Continue reading

I hope your new year is getting off to a great start! I leaped into 2010 with a broom & dust pan in hand--had to give my studio a good straightening up. Then I joined an art biz class--the Blast Off Class taught by Alyson Stanfield. Here are a few of the illustrated affirmations for artists that I've been creating for motivation. -- It's my favorite assignment! Continue reading

Hi Carolyn!!!! -- Oooo my blog, I've been away too long, but will be back when I finish making plans & lists of my goals for 2010. Yes--let's do some tandum smithing. I still have some Joe-Joe's. If you visit my studio I'll be happy to share! ; ) Hey I just visited your blog and saw your entry about Etsy's Hearts for Haiti- That's really incredible! And the necklace you donated was snatched right up. Kudos for doing something so heartfelt for such a good cause!
Oh my gosh! The big brown UPS truck just pulled out of my driveway, and left behind this beautiful book-- The Penland Book of Jewelry: Master Classes in Jewelry Techniques. This isn't your usual tips & techniques guide to jewelry making... Continue reading

The holiday season is a busy time of year for most folks--especially artists who participate in holiday art markets. I usually sell my work in shops or online, but in the Autumn I like to add a few holiday markets to my calendar. They are great opportunities, not just to make sales, but to meet my customers face to face--hear what they like about my work or what they would like to see added to my collection. The events also give me a chance to meet other artists--admire their work and hear their insights about living and breathing the creative... Continue reading

Thanks J. It really was one of those amazing stories that decided it needed to be written. I felt like I was being pulled along as the words spilled out onto the page.
Last Friday, I left The Magpie's studio and set out on a grand adventure--a weekend in New York City. On my list of things to see were Greenwich Village, indie bookstores, and some uber-cozy restaurants. Continue reading

While I was able to enjoy my grandmothers's jewelry when they were both alive, out in hazy shadows of memory is my great-grandmother Amelia--my mom's mom's mom. I hadn't even seen a picture of Amelia until last year, but somehow I was the great-grandchild chosen to receive her engagement ring. Continue reading
