The ice cream episode is my favorite - not coincidentally probably the drunkest one. But "When did we add confetti?" in the 4th of July one is my favorite moment.
Internet (a love song)
So this is pretty rad: Thanks to Felicia Day, who brought this to my attention
The iPod/iPhone Dropbox app has a decent PDF viewer. You probably want to "favorite" the PDF first to store a copy locally for speed.
I'd love the heck out of some Car Wars (or Illuminati) on a tablet. Maybe the combination of cheap Android tablets and the free SDK will drive some interesting stuff too.
in which the case for buying an iPad is almost made
When Apple announced the iPad, I was so unimpressed and bored with it, I couldn't even muster a "meh." It seemed to solve a problem that didn't exist, and while I kept waiting for Apple to make the case for it, I don't think they ever did. I mean, if I'm going to spend five hundred fucking dolla...
Asteroids, Phoenix, and finally Tempest - The Pick Kwik on the way to and from middle school. The one where I'd spend part of my lunch money on a Mountain Dew every morning (25 cents after the 10 cent refund for returning the glass bottle). That back corner is where we learned the arcade etiquette of lining up your quarter for a future game and also how to make the classic fake fart sound with an armpit.
Chiller always bring me back to Flippers, a full-blown arcade near our midnight movie theater. Chiller was the last-ditch game when you were broke because it was set to award free games if you scored high enough. We could play for an hour on one quarter before going on to fall asleep halfway through The Wall or Rocky Horror.
From the Vault: Uses Joystick Controller
I'm sure it's an enormous surprise to learn that I've spent a lot of time recently thinking about games and gaming, so I've found myself looking through old blog posts for research, inspiration, and to confirm or deny that strange "I think I've written about this idea before..." tingle that's re...
David Friedman did a photo profile of the inventor, Michael Rosenberg:

Tired of losing those tiny Nintendo DS games?
We found a brilliant solution to prevent losing those postage-stamp-sized Nintendo DS games. The Game Chamber is a storage system that won't let you get a new game out until you put the old one back. That sure beats finding a $20-$40 game in the couch cushions or under your foot. The bulkier ...
Steven Jackson needs a free Car Wars Lite, like a rework of Mini Car Wars.
beware the mad hermit of the northlands
So you've listened to the D&D podcasts I did with Scott Kurtz, Gabe, and Tycho... You've read my series of posts about playing 4E with my son and his friends... You've read my post about being a Dungeon Master... You've read my other posts about gaming, especially how much I love D&D, how surpri...
And a real bookstore with new and used.
And a Coke/soda/pop machine that sells real drinks with real sugar in real glass bottles.
LA Daily: Miniature Golf and the Goddamn Volcano Hole
Having realized my own creative limitations, my contributions to the LA Daily will now be bi-weekly, instead of weekly. Let's all celebrate with this week's story, which appears to be about playing minigolf with my wife. "Fucking Pagoda hole. That was bullshit. The volcano hole will be the gre...
For my birthday in 5th grade, I got the Holmes blue book set with B2 and chits instead of dice. (Somebody needs to make a tshirt about those chits.) It looked cool but I couldn't figure out how the "turns" in this new game worked, so it took a few months before I found someone that knew how things worked.
I still have the ratty, taped together, partially colored old blue basic book. I got it out so my 9 y/o daughter could see what it's like to play old-school pencil and paper instead of Neverwinter Nights, but it just isn't the same without having a few players around her age.
this isn't a book; it's a time machine
This is where it all began for me: the D&D Basic Rules Set. When I opened this book in 1983, I had no idea that it would change my life. Back then, if you told 11 year-old me that I'd be 36 and wiping tears from my face because reading it brought back so many joyful memories, he would have cal...
Funny. My 9 y/o daughter and I were just clearing out those same caves last weekend. Multiplayer Neverwinter Nights + user-contributed content = years of fun for $20 / person.
the big dog-men live very high in the caves
The fourth edition Dungeon Master's Guide is the DM's guide I've wanted to read since I was a kid. Unlike previous editions, which were filled with all kinds of stat blocks and very little information on actually running a game, the 4E DMG could also be called The Art of Dungeon Mastering, becau...
Also, Peter Bowerman (The Well-Fed Writer) now has The Well-Fed Self-Publisher out.
a few self-publishing resources
The positive response to Sunken Treasure has surprised and delighted me even more than the fantastic sales of both the print and PDF versions. As of this writing, PDF sales have vastly exceeded my expectations, and though print sales have slowed, they haven't stopped. I've seen a direct relation...
It seems nearly impossible to actually purchase it, but the Cabala bootleg boxed set is an awesome listen. Disc 1 is practically a "making the band" in music.
getting the led out
Then as it was, then again it will be An' though the course may change sometimes Rivers always reach the sea While writing today, I've been rocking my way through all my Led Zeppelin albums, in order. I'm currently up to Physical Graffiti, and have just discovered that I don't have the sound ...
My 5 year old was so excited: "It's the guy that does the voice of Beaker!"

just in case you missed the macy's parade moment everyone is talking about
This is the best version I've seen. It came from MartiMcKenna on Twitter.

Three things today: 1. I'm pretty sure I'm not a prima dona, but I've been prima dona-adjacent plenty of times in the course of my acting career. Because of my extensive experience with prima donas, I was able to advise John Scalzi on the matter yesterday, via an IM conversation that he's reprin...

Yeah, surely you've dropped "Drive Offensively" on him. Fnord.
who's gonna drive you home tonight?
Anne and I took Nolan out to Glendale tonight for this art thing he likes to do. After we dropped him off, Anne said, "Hey, I want to have a dinner date with my husband." Bonus, unexpected dinner dates are always awesome, so I didn't even put up token resistance, and we had an awesome meal toget...

I had I think the same sinus surgery about 16 years ago. Until recently I was getting 2-4 sinus infections a year.
I now swear by Flonase (or the generic). Any time I get any sinus or throat stuff I hit the Flonase twice a day for 2-3 days and I coast right through without developing a sinus infection.
it's the only way to be sure
So it turns out that I do, in fact, have a sinus infection. Because it's the first one post-sinus surgery, my doctor decided that the best course of action would be to blast off and nuke the site from orbit. I asked him if maybe we could do something a little less extreme, but he assured me that...

Wow. I don't even remember my first time. Rocky became our default midnight movie if no greats like Platoon or Die Hard or Return to Horror High were playing.
The last time I remember going was Halloween night in Atlanta. It was a much more elaborate setting than what I grew up with. My college roommate almost punched me when I outed him as a virgin.
Just the other night we were talking about our dream cast for a remake: Eddie Izzard as Frankenfurter, Jack Black as Eddie, ... and that was as far as we could agree on.
when you dressed up sharp and you felt alright
A few days after my sixteenth birthday, I lost my Rocky Horror virginity with my best friend, in a shitty little duplex theater in Van Nuys. I'd wanted to see Rocky since I was ten or eleven on my way to an audition and my mom drove us past a marquee advertising a midnight showing every Saturday...

I started in 1979 with the blue book basic set. With "chits" since they couldn't get dice made fast enough.
I never met him, but I owe a lot to Gary's legacy.
across the sea, a pale moon rises.
I just found out that Gary Gygax died. He was only 69. I failed my save vs. stunning blow, so forgive me if this isn't the most polished thing in the world. For most geeks, RPGs are a huge part of who we are, and many of the games I've loved -- and continue to love -- probably wouldn't exist as...

I can't believe your recovery is taking so long. I'm not quite sure what you had done up there.
About 16 years ago had two turbinates removed and the septum straightened which massively reduced my congestion and allergy suffering. I remember the recovery sucking but nowhere near this bad especially once the packing was out. It seems like I was back to normal in two weeks.
Hang in there. It was worth it.
notice whom for wheels are turning
Yesterday, I woke up feeling about 50% of normal. It's the closest I've felt to normal since I went in for surgery, so it was a huge improvement. I got all the way up to about 70% by the late afternoon, but was back down to 50% by the time I went to bed. I feel pretty much the same, this morning...

You're going to host a Tron-themed reality show similar to American Gladiator.
announcing announcements
I have three announcements, ranging from cool to awesome, coming over the next 24 hours or so. They're all interconnected, so I could make them all at once, but where's the fun in that? I'm heading out to a meeting right now that's related to one of the announcements, so feel free to speculat...
