I have to be honest. I have absolutely no clue what the paragraph above says but I can say that I speak four languages and that I only knew one up until five years ago. The science of linguistics is about the study of the mechanics of language but IMHO has nothing to do with the pure study of any individual language for the purpose of communication. It is amazing to me how possessive people are over the word "linguist" and how it can only mean what they want it to mean. I have to wonder how these people feel about other words such as "gay" or "cool" or "awesome". Unfortunately I think some people fail to realize how much English has evolved and how words don't always have such limited meanings. It is really unfortunate for them to fail to see the versatility and flexibility of the English tounge.
