Northwest Pool is my all-time favorite. For me, a former suburban kid who logged countless summer hours racing in deep ends and lounging in plastic chairs drinking cans of grape soda, it's my ideal big public pool. One of my favorite things in life is to go here in the... Continue reading

Here's the firewheel mosaic I did a few months ago. I finished the other side yesterday. I thought using red grout in the flower part would look fantastic, but I think it just washes the tiles out. I was so convinced two colors of grout would look cool that I... Continue reading

Lest you think all I do is go to pools--although I did that too; look for pool review number five soon--I'd like to show you a few things I'm working on. I made my sister a mirror like this last year. Then I made another, similar mirror. Now that's done... Continue reading

Dick Nichols Pool in Southwest Austin is far from my daily rounds, but it's close to my friend Angela's house. She agreed to meet me there so I could review it and we could hang out. I like swimming with friends. We'll usually futz around at the end of the... Continue reading

Shipe Pool was where I discovered my love of lap swimming. I went there every single day for a whole summer about 10 years ago. The legislature had been called into overtime, so I was working the evening shift all summer. I would wake at 11 each day, ride my... Continue reading

Dottie Jordan Pool is a short walk from my house, so even though it's not terribly exciting as far as pools go, it's one of my all-time favorites. It's pretty great to be able to wander down for a quick dip on a hot afternoon, walk home, and get on... Continue reading

I love to swim, both in the form of lap swimming and splashing around in the deep end pretending I am a sparkly mermaid and not a 40-year-old state worker. I get in the water at least a couple times a week in the summer and once a month in... Continue reading

It's hot, which is no surprise, given that it's August in Texas, but we've reached the part of summer where the heat seems to have mass. It presses on you and makes even the most fun activities seem burdensome. So aside from swimming and walking the dogs in the dead... Continue reading

I've been trying to cook more and different vegetables for all the reasons you're supposed to, but I'm also discovering that vegetables are annoying. You have to buy them, keep them fresh, use them up in time, and then chop, pit, peel, seed, roast, or grill them. I took a... Continue reading

Eric and I have occasionally talked about keeping some animals, maybe goats, in our backyard. Not very seriously, just enough to read some websites about it, pick the spot where we'd do it, and talk idly about how nice it would be to have fresh food right there in the... Continue reading

Have you ever signed yourself up for something far in advance because you knew it would be a good thing to do, then pretty much forgot about it until the day of? When it's too late to back out, even though there are a good many things you'd rather be... Continue reading

(Warning: This is all pretty gross.) My morning was rolling along pleasantly yesterday when I stepped out back to water the tomato plants. While I was out there I stooped to pull up a weed that was growing next to our giant agave plant and poink! I jammed my eye... Continue reading

Kristy--my hope is that the city will be choked with them, making travel impossible. Tonya and Nimble--thanks! They are sometimes also called Indian blanket, but I think "firewheel" sounds more badass. They might grow in Kansas but probably not Washington!

Not a lot going on this weekend, which was nice. I decided to finish a project I'd set aside when I got busy with work in the spring: tiling a firewheel, my favorite wildflower, on the side of a crappy old cinder block. We'd been using this block to light... Continue reading

I like Twitter, I love Instagram. But I miss writing--and therefore thinking--a little more deeply about things. I miss telling stories and sharing more than one picture at a time. So I think I'm going to do it here. At first I thought it would be better if I waited... Continue reading

Oh, hey, I just saw this! We were hot and dry all summer, with a little more rain than previous years. Everything struggled along until fall, when we started getting abundant rain. I can't even plant my winter garden yet because the basil, peppers, tomatoes, and even okra are all producing like mad and I don't want to tear them out. Did it ever dry out for y'all?
