Willa you?
I love your leaves. Thanks be for leaves.
You got your hugelkultur in my keyhole garden!
Trying to grow things in Texas can be heartbreaking. It's been hot and dry, dry, dry for much of the year lately. I was getting discouraged for a while, but this year I decided to try again, and try harder. First, I bought two more rain barrels so I could store the water when it does rain. (Th...
I am still picking away at it! Shortly after I posted that I realized I was just over halfway done and it was going to be a while yet. It has gotten easier as I've gotten used to the writing style, and it's so good, but I still can't read it for more than 15-20 minutes at a time before my attention starts to flag.
With a whimper
I have four and a half days left of vacation, and I am not making any plans for them. I would like to read the rest of Moby Dick. I would like to get my new compost bin set up and started. I would like to plan my next mosaic project (you can see the latest one here; it was a present for Eric's m...
I ended up adding a brick on either side to expand a few months later, but for herbs it should be fine. Also, a tip: if you're growing mint, plant it in the holes in the blocks to keep it from taking over everything. It'll still try, but it helps!
Block head
It totally does not look like it, but this vegetable garden-to-be took me most of the weekend. That is primarily because I painted the blocks with masonry paint so they'd look nicer and not wick so much moisture out of the soil, but still. The work crew two doors down replaced a roof, a retai...
Hey, thanks! And yes, learn that banjo! And then as soon as you can play even a little, find someone to play with. It's so fun.
Grout about
Hey, I tiled a table! And then I grouted it! I gave it to Eric, who in theory will use it to rest his tongs and plates while grilling and smoking delicious food for us to eat. The light in the second picture is better so it's not really a fair comparison, but the grout really does make a hu...
You know that this is all your fault, Murse.

Thanks, Emily! I appreciate it. I am not on Facebook, but! If you use Firefox you can apply a similar image as a skin: http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/147627
Uneventful summer punctuation
One story is that I got an honorable mention in the Austin Art Boards competition. It's a cool project--Reagan Advertising agreed to work with the Austin Visual Arts Association to display art on its billboards when they aren't being leased to paying customers. So instead of some stupid "DO BILL...
We went to a monkey sanctuary in Kyoto thinking it would be pure magic but had pretty much the same experience you did. Turns out that fearless, grabby, aggressive monkeys are kind of terrifying.
Those statues are great, though!
Bali's Sacred Monkey Forest
Sacred Monkey Forest. Or minor place of panic, at least for me. Monkeys are kind of cute, right? Or at least goofy? Well, yes. BUT. The Sacred Monkey Forest, just outside of Ubud, Bali, is FULL of monkeys. Monkeys that have no fear of humans. Toothy monkeys. The Sacred Monkey Forest...
You bet, Murse! I love their eusocial nature too.
Also, you should all know that this is post number 2222. (AKA 290 East, Texas State Highway Spur 69, Koenig Lane, Allandale Road, Northland Drive, and Bullick Hollow Road.)
Rubber naked mole rat quest, eight years later
Hey, remember the Great Rubber Naked Mole Rat Search of Aught-Four? (Hey, remember when I was really engaged with this blog?) Over the years I have gotten many, many e-mails asking me to duplicate my efforts and find the writer their own replacement. I always gently decline but promise to keep a...
Hi, Molly! How's it going? Making a big batch of this sauce is the highest and best use for surplus peppers as far as I'm concerned: http://www.jaybones.com/recipes/jalapeno_sauce/index.htm
(Maybe if I make this enough I can justify the purchase of a propane torch, but for now I just use the grill or the broiler!)
Soak
About ten pounds of chicken parts are reposing in a jerk paste/beer slurry for the smoker. Tomorrow's Fathers' Day menu will also include coconut rice with pigeon peas. I'm thinking about grilling a lot of veg, too, on a smaller Weber. Or, Maybe. It's the first grill of the season. A few fruits ...
Yeah, go for it! I tried to learn the banjo about 10 years ago. It was easy and fun but I couldn't figure out how to tune it so I quit. I should have just taken lessons; I could be a banjo wizard by now. Damn it.
Father's Day Jamboree
Happy Father's Day, everyone! (In the interest of preserving my pride, what there is of it, I'd like to point out that my dad has been playing banjo for 49 years; I've been playing trombone for three weeks.)
Aw, shucks, thanks. I'm hoping someday we can play together for real.

Yep. He's probably still numb from when I was learning clarinet in middle school.

How to spend your day off:
Look, everyone, it's Kristy!
They don't smell like much really, although Eric thinks they might if there are a ton of trees blooming together. We saw/smelled some plum blossoms that had a nice fragrance today, though.
Light and Dark
Yesterday we took the train a little ways out of town to visit the Studio Ghibli Museum. It was charming, comfortable, and inspiring. They don't allow photography inside, and at first I was bummed about that, but I quickly changed my mind. It was nice to see families roaming around and interact...
Hi, Dan! It's true--they even use them to represent temples on maps. These were red, black, and white swastikas, though, not temple swastikas.

They reminded me more of a magazine crew than a pop group.
Lag time!
Hi! We are up early in Tokyo, drinking canned coffee and planning what will probably be a slow, jet-lagged day. The flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo was uneventful, except that an overhead bin sprung open when we were taxiing and a bunch of bags fell out. Everyone gasped; no one was hurt. Also o...
Yes, you are having a great time in the future!

Ewwwwww!
In case you ever need to express the concept of "cat money" in Japanese...
I have created this handy guide for you. I'm not sure how much practical help this Japanese class is going to be, but it's amusing me, for sure.
Uhhhhh huhhhh!
I do a little dance, 'cause we're done with refinance:
Yeah, it'll probably be worth it if you guys think you'll be there for even a couple more years.

I admit I did not read all of these but started to scroll down--and then laughed because it kept scrolling...and scrolling. He is such a bozo.
Just Go Away, Limbaugh
Rush Limbaugh’s sponsors continue to drop like flies, and I admit that I can’t contain my glee. When I said that this latest incident was the last straw, that the vitriol spewed at Sandra Fluke that burst the door down to such a roar of rage has been cumulative, here is what I mean. Yes. It giv...
Last winter I filled a pot with leftover ryegrass seeds, plopped it in a $3 wood holder thingy from ikea, and gave the top a blunt cut every once in a while. It looked stupendous for like a whole month!
Grass
So, I figured, grass in a dish is intriguing but really not worth paying a lot for at the posh flower shop. Then the teenager was given the gift of grass from a man whose cats she tends when he's away. So we're all trendy like that now, too.
Our long national nightmare is over.
I am classy.
When I was in New York City in January I was amazed by the mosaic signs and artwork in the subway stations. When I got home I searched online for mosaic classes, thinking it would be nice to have a piece of all that for myself. I was secretly planning to plan to take a mosaic class someday but n...
