I assume then you never tried dsniff, which included a program (webspy) that did something very similar and has been around for a decade. It provided tools to sniff out sensitive data on a wired network. As for a greater use of SSL for sensitive bits, if you want to make the web safer then push for better SNI (Server Name Indication) in servers and clients.
