Editor's note: For our last week at Food Lush, I've asked the writers to share both a favorite post by another writer, from over the last three years, and a favorite post of their own. You'll see these posts linked to at the top of their new post for the... Continue reading

By Julie So, it's winter. Fall is over, Christmas is over, New Year's is over, and we all feel that tug to kick off this young year being virtuous and healthy. Blurgh. I still want tasty, comforting treats and I don't want to feel guilty about that. I need something... Continue reading

By Julie I come by my love of gadgets honestly - I get it from my father. And that lucky guy (along with my mom) got to attend the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week. Every shiny, new thingamajig thought up and produced was on display, including a... Continue reading

There's a difference between online shopping and online purchasing, and I think you're drawing it perfectly. It's totally OK to make a smart purchase online to save money or get exactly what you want. It's the distracted perusing that causes trouble (at least for me). I think this is a terrific goal for the year.

By Julie I was grocery shopping the other day, absentmindedly looking for something new and fun to jazz up dinner when I happened upon this: In the spirit of full disclosure, my oven fries have never been anything special, no matter what I've tried. I have yet to find that... Continue reading

By Julie In planning (as Nora mentioned, only 4! baking days left until Christmas) the bacchanalia that is Christmas cookie baking, I start by making sure I have the basic ingredients on hand - flour, sugar, eggs, butter. Wait, butter? Or margarine? But what if the old family recipe calls... Continue reading

By Julie Earlier this year, I talked about Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice tea, and I still love it so much. But it’s a) somewhat pricey for tea, and b) hard to find. Yesterday, I went to the new Trader Joe’s in my area (finally!), and lo and behold,... Continue reading

By Julie While we were planning our trip to Maui, our local paper happened to run a spread on the island, including a list of their favorite places to eat. One of those spots was Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop, which we noticed on our drive to the hotel from... Continue reading

By Julie We ate a lot of fantastic food in Maui, a trip we took to celebrate our 10 year anniversary, but I’d like to start with a restaurant where we began and where we finished: Longhi’s. My parents suggested this place, and I’d read about it, so we knew... Continue reading

By Julie I love the holidays, and I love holiday food. Sadly, there aren’t many special Thanksgiving snack items out there, so let’s go straight to Christmas. On one of my recent trips to my beloved Costco, I came upon these: My kids insisted that I buy them, but who... Continue reading

By Julie Last week, my husband and I took a very long-awaited (years and years of waiting and saving) vacation in Maui. And while I have lots to say about the food in this island paradise, I’m going to tell you about a revelation I had while there. And that... Continue reading

My first thought is to save it for wherever the Blathering is held next year (and where would that BE, Jennie?), but I could say Chicago since we'll be going that way again to visit family, or heck, let's just say somewhere near a beach. Really anywhere. Down the street. I'm good.

By Julie I’ve been thinking a lot about how I grocery shop. It may not be the most efficient way, but it works for me and for us as a family. I clip coupons when I can, and read the circulars so I can get the most bang for my... Continue reading

By Julie There are many things for which the State Fair of Texas (yes, capitalized) is known, but perhaps none so much as the cuisine. Which, in this case, is a fancy word for fried everything. Literally. And it is awesome. I haven’t been to the fair in many years,... Continue reading

I am 100% certain this is a verbatim exchange I'll be having with Chris sometime in the near future.

By Julie Confession: I enjoy wine, but I am not a wine connoisseur. I prefer white to red, sweet to dry, and cost and label mean nothing to me. In fact, if I find a wine that I like that’s super easy on the wallet, I consider that the holy... Continue reading

By Julie A few months ago, I got a Ninja blender, and since then, we’ve been making smoothies like they’re going out of style. Well, some of those have been adult smoothies – OK, they’re margaritas – but I digress. And I’ve discovered a few things along that way that... Continue reading

By Julie My daughter is becoming a pickier eater by the day. No matter how I prepare chicken, it just doesn’t measure up to her standards (read: pre-made nuggets only). Forget pork chops. And seafood doesn’t exist until it is in stick form. All of this gives me headaches. Repeatedly.... Continue reading

By Julie There are lots of ways to procure herbs and spices for your pantry collection. If you’re an avid, or even amateur, gardener, you can grow your own in season. In fact, I once heard that herbs are second only to succulents for their growing ease and forgiveness. That... Continue reading

By Julie Have you ever been to Mimi’s Café? Mimi’s has location in 24 states and is, in my opinion, a fantastic place for breakfast. I mean, their lunch and dinner options look divine as well, but I love going to Mimi’s for breakfast. So does my dad, and in... Continue reading

By Julie So I'm perusing my local fancypants grocery store's ad (and I mean that as a compliment because they sell nifty products you don't find just everywhere), and I notice naan pizzas from Tandoor Chef are on sale. I've eyed them in the freezer case before and not yet... Continue reading

By Julie Do you have an Aldi market in your area? They have just begun to pop up in my neck of the woods. Aldi prides itself on providing the lowest prices possible, which is a sentiment that goes straight to my heart. And wallet. There are a couple of... Continue reading

I'm not the most normal 30 - ahem, plus - year old, but I love me some Awkward. (except for that stupid period). We should have a watching party. Also, TV is MUCH more fun to talk about than politics and indie movies. Come over for dinner and I promise not to talk about either of them.

By Julie Monday is the first day of school for my second grader. He is utterly excited; I am totally stressed out. One of the reasons is lunch. For the past two years, we have had exactly three lunch options in rotation: a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (the odds-on... Continue reading

By Julie We’ve just returned from a cross country road trip, which included not one, but two visits to Trader Joe’s. The second was at the behest of my seven year old. Clearly, I’m raising him right. Our haul included an item I’ve been reading about on Twitter for some... Continue reading
