Laptop is partially because of dysgraphia. We've enthusiastically embraced letting him use a keyboard to get his thoughts out sometimes -- the frustration of not being able to write well (which is to say at all) becomes a huge obstacle to his actually doing the work. Happy to let him use whatever tools we can scramble up to help him adapt and achieve.
The other part, though, is that the teacher told the kids they could "be creative" in how they presented their material. I'm sure she had in mind dressing up as the historical figure, or, I don't know, a poster or a diorama or some shit, but Charlie cut right to the chase: "Can I do it on a computer?" Well, sure, especially if it means I don't have to help you refashion Marie Curie's lab in miniature out of cat-hair-covered Wiki Stix.
But seriously, folks, I'm here till recess
Speaking of trying hard, Charlie and his class were charged with the task of doing a report on notable women for women's history month. Charlie's choice surprised no one, though his title did strike me as maybe a little too hip for the room: Marie Curie: Radiation Lady The "trying hard" part wa...

Erk, thank you! Fixed.
Dear Mom (writing about Mom) writing about Mom on the iPhone
These days I don't usually get too exercised about mom-on-mom atrocities. You know: the mommy wars. Momtroversy! Hand-to-hand mombat! ...OkayI'llstopnow. ... ... ...Momnia Brawlia in tres partes diviOKAY. It's not so much that I feel that hot-button topics don't apply to me, because Marissa Meye...

Ann, I am so sorry for your family's pain and loss.
Abiding with you and letting your words reverberate.
Gone bad wrong
Every time something bad happens, some disaster — a shooting, a storm — that doesn't discriminate in its violence, people tell each other, "Hug your babies tight." The message I get is that we're supposed to feel a renewed gratitude to be able to draw our children close when others can't. And I...

Four: the arguments against
At high volume, in full cry: "I didn't want a kiss! I can't just wipe it off! Now there's something unpleasant on my cheek!" "I was watching the swirl in the bathtub as the water went down the drain and... Continue reading

Lies I tell my children
The hole in Ben's ear is, variably, a portal for sound, a window into the future, and the warren of a family of tiny raccoons who eavesdrop on his thoughts. Why does Tintin's co-conspirator Captain Haddock carry a cane? To... Continue reading

Comes with the territory
Ohhh, I just had a day. Two incidents of note: We'd been out in the car, and Ben's window was down because I make him open it while he smokes. When we got home I pulled into the garage; before... Continue reading

Scorecard
I'm back in the ski lodge this snowy Saturday, somehow managing to collect my thoughts over the sound of young femurs snapping. (It sounds like bamboo windchimes. Relaxing in its way.) First, my thanks for the support and ideas you... Continue reading

Expert
It's kind of fucked up how people say, "You're the expert on your child," when they want to be reassuring. You know, don't ignore your intuition. Let your knowledge of your child be your guide. Trust your instincts. Mother knows... Continue reading

The bean was dark brown and probably did look like just a clump of wax. ...That is the certainty I'm clinging to, anyway.
Farmer boy
Imagine that most of this post is backed by intermittent screaming, the kind that jerks a parent awake at night and sends her running down the hall. That was Charlie, several times a night, from the start of this post almost to its end. Here, just shove these in as you're reading, whenever you g...
