I have seen my kids purposely wipe their feet onto my old slip covers...they were insanely gross. We had the beige version and also had the weird greasy stain (I always blamed it on the dog barf but now I'm not so sure).
white slipcovers
Everybody in our house said something along the lines of"White? Really? Did they have other colors?". Even the dogs and cats seemed to question the wisdom of it. But I don't care. Something had to be done and I made the leap to white. Word on the internet is that they clean easily and ...
I love patches too. I think the version with white edges shows the patches best; kind of modern too.
quilting update
I've been working on all the quilts I showed you before in fits and starts over here since that post. Thought I'd share a little update. Above, you can see a shot of my latest obsession, stitching all the itty bitty pieces that have been cut off edges or scraps from who knows what. Some of ...
Love it Chris!
{ the henredon chair }
Oh this little chair. I found her at a thrift store this summer. She was gorgeous. Fabulous lines, gorgeous fabric. A deliciously plump down cushion. Worn, faded, and a little stained, yes, but truly a beautiful piece of furniture. Without hesitation, I had her loaded into the back of m...
Betty, just search for "macaroni" or "forum" on my blog and you'll find the recipe (or look under the "easy bake" section at the top of the page). Let me know if you need any additional info...hope you like it!

I'm a very organized person except when it comes to recipes. I collect too many of them and the ones I use over and over are folded and food-covered. And stored in about 5 places. I get anxious when I can't find one I'm looking for. Recipes I share here are usually an emergency backup for...
I would totally snatch that up!
american history
My thrift store change is for real. The old manager is definitely back and that store is organized...skirts sorted by length and color (scored two for my teacher wardrobe). Even better, I added a new plate to my classroom collection. American history at its prettiest.
That would be my Ikea dream come true!
january nesting
I started this morning with an all-out search for a lost earring. I know I lost it in bed and have been waiting for it to miraculously appear for over a month. Moving the mattress, crawling under the bed, and moving furniture led to an all-out cleaning session (but no earring). And that ...
No way...I noticed that the lady in charge of Florissant has been at Normandy so that explains it. Very sad thrifting news.

Not me...my husband. Happy Birthday Natalie!

It's a birthday day here...my built-in deadline for getting my Christmas tree down. I'm always just as happy to see it come down as I am when I put it up. Always ready to move on. I like to keep a few "winter" things around so I will keep this cup of enchanted pinecones. Enchanted only m...

I had an etsy conversation last month about Martha Stewart paint colors. Andrea was wondering if I had the old paint chips and possibly had the one for "Mercury Glass". Of course I did...doesn't everybody save beautiful paint colors?...it's not just me right? I had lots going on but droppe...
I would say that 8 out of 10 times, I leave my thrift store with nothing...not even one single ornament this year and I used to find boxes and boxes.

Good thrifting continued to be elusive for me this year. My best for the year was a set of chairs. Bentwood, woven seat, distressed white finish. There were about 50 of these in the thrift store window and I snagged four...$6.95 each.
Mentioned only a few times but of course I've got a whole pinterest board for A-frames. Merry Christmas Jen!

We are all spending the night in our little gingerbread house in the woods. Ice skating is out because the lakes are only slushy. So we are staying inside and close to the fire...back home in the morning before anyone (me) gets cabin fever.
The island of misfit crafts...theres always next year. Hope you have a Merry Christmas Amy!

I wish there were no crafts left behind at my house but every year there are a few. This year it's the crepe paper trees. I've had the vintage green crepe paper forever and even had the foam trees ...just not the time. I will bundle the supplies together for next year because they can't si...
My homeroom is 8th grade and I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th. Never a dull moment.

Snow flurries started during our class Christmas parties today...total mayhem. It's a classic blustery night here with the wind shaking our windows and knocking power out in half of the neighborhood. Ellen made this gingerbread house last weekend (kit from Ikea) and I told her to dust it wi...
I love paint-by-numbers too but have never found a really good one. My one-mile commute isn't nearly as good as yours but I do take my kids by the creepy exorcist house here in St. Louis.
Vintage Paint by Numbers Love
The only good thing about my evening commute from the accursed day job is that I drive through the famed Georgetown business district in downtown DC. For those of you old enough to remember "St. Elmos' Fire", that's where the Brat Pack boozed. For those of you even older, I pass by the creepy st...
I am making cookies this weekend and will follow your tips. I trust your science completely!
How to bake the perfect spritz cookie
Baking seemed just the right thing over the weekend, in all the weirdness and sadness and the sense that we should be getting ready for Christmas even when it didn't feel quite right. So I baked. It's a comforting way to spend a few hours, quiet and reassuring and contemplative somehow. It's...
I have no idea what happened...the site said it was on backorder but I added it to my cart and paid for it and it arrived a few days later. Now is says "not available online" (which it also says for things marked "free shipping"...doesn't make any sense)

I went to World Market to buy this drying rack. They didn't have it and I came home with this and this. I ordered it (and the cute tags) online a couple of weeks ago and I wanted to link to it here but now is says "not available online"...huh? I added a mix of red and green thrifted cups. ...
Fantastic crafting (your mom would have been a famous blogger in her day ;-) Thanks Mary!

Do you remember crafts your mom made at Christmas? It seems that I forget a lot but I remember crafting vividly. I know I was fascinated by a gold wreath my mom made from computer punch cards (I know, right?). I also know that she made wreaths tied in gingham and calico scraps; one for ever...
Now I'll be on the lookout too...two thrifters are better than one.

Holy flashback...I totally remember the folded magazine thing too.

I took down the aprons I have on the shelf in my kitchen...getting ready to replace a few with holiday aprons. This turquoise gingham is still one of my favorites. Look closely at the tag from Margie. The four stitched Xs are the cutest thing ever.
Cool...I would love to see it!

I stood on the top of a too rickety ladder in my too crowded garage a couple of weeks ago and pulled down every vintage screen I could safely get my hands on. The plan is to make one of these like the crazy-talented Amy. In the mean time, I am using it to hold a scrappy garland I made. ...
My big puppy got to the extras I made so I haven't had any in a while either;-)

You may have seen these cookies here before. They are good and easy...Herman Hill Shortbread. With some of my notecards, red dot cups and parchment paper from World Market (kind of my new favorite store...have you seen this collection?) and a red dot tray from Ikea, they made a cute vignett...
I have the same set. Everything looks good in them. Clementines in the punch bowl and tea lights in the cups (and egg nog too!) on Christmas Eve.
So many questions
Do I really want to stop at the thrift store this late in the evening? Is this a good price? I know I should sell it, but would it be OK to keep it? Having answered yes to all of these questions, there's just one more. Multiple choice: What should I fill it with? Egg nog, Tom & Je...
I do love my eighth graders...silly as they can be sometimes.

It was field trip day. We rode the bus, got our gum taken away by the teacher, and were ridiculously loud during the short ride. We saw stuff about that one guy we've studied... George Washington I think. I haven't been to the Missouri History Museum since I was in grade school...but today...
No Way! We left about 11:30 so we just missed you. I really liked the exhibit too and my kids really enjoyed it (and maybe learned something!).
