"This administration doesn't respect the majority of Americans..They just put a gun to everyone's head and tell us this is the way it's going to be"
And how does that differ from all previous and future admistrations?
McClanahan column
E. Thomas McClanahan’s Sept. 15 column “Threat from Sebelius defies economic reality” rails about pending rate increases in health insurance due to the new health care legislation. My rates went up 44 percent last year, when I never visited a doctor and had no pre-existing conditions. Apparently...
Army - Unemployment hasn't been 5% since April '08. In fact, unemployment reached it's highest point while Bush II was in office.

GOP hard to forget
How could the Republicans, in their wildest imagination, think we have forgotten the eight years prior to Barack Obama taking office? Ronald T. Craddolph Sr. Blue Springs
The crime is perjury not taking/dealing steroids. Are you arguing that perjury to Congress should not be a crime?
Leave Clemens alone
What kind of world do we live in? Roger Clemens, a baseball player, is being prosecuted for lying to Congress about whether or not he took steroids. Who is the victim of his crime? The only true victim is Roger Clemens. One could make a case for other victims such as children who lost the aura...
Thanks to all for absolutely proving my point.
A question as simple as 'How much have we spent on the Iraq war?' devolves into another playground argument about partisan politics.
End tax cuts on rich
Unlike a letter writer from Sept. 1 who offers rhetoric to denounce Robert Reich while contending that it is history, here is some actual history. President Bill Clinton raised taxes on the wealthy. This led to a decade of economic growth and even a surplus when President Clinton left office. ...
"the total cost of the war in Iraq was less than Obama's failed stimulus spending." - Arminius
Have you found a source somewhere that tallys Iraq war spending? I have been digging around and have never found anything I could believe as an accurate accounting.

Careful Republicans, when you win in November, the public will expect you to cut spending dramatically.
The catch is that the public wants to cut spending on the programs that affect everyone else (not them).
Taxes needed in U.S.
I would just like to write about responsibility that individuals have who live in a larger society and how that relates to taxes. Like most everybody else, I do not like to pay taxes, however, as an adult I know that I must help pay my bills and debt to the nation. I am not a nation of one, but...

Who are these magical folks who actually legislate based upon the opinions of the 'majority'?
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." - Pete Townshend
U.S. democratic, free
The birthers who deny the truth of President Barack Obama’s citizenship and the tea-party/Sarah Palin/Glenn-Beck acolytes who deny pretty much everything that is true and real proclaim, “We want our country back.” The obvious question is: Who are they taking the country back from? Is it the dem...
"However, many economists believe that reducing tax rates on the “wealthy” brings corresponding economic growth, which leads them to pay more taxes and increases Treasury revenues."
... that's some damn good economic growth we've had over the past two years.
Bush tax cut
Demonstrating a lack of knowledge of economic history, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich in an Aug. 14 column, “Scrap the Bush tax cut for the very wealthy,” says that President George W. Bush’s top marginal tax rate cut should be allowed to expire at year’s end to help pay down the deficit. H...
OK, I'll not call it spending, I'll call it revenue loss. And if one is truly interested in deficit reduction, one needs to look at increasing revenues as well as reduced spending.
Stimulus earns ‘F’
The stimulus package has proven a disastrous failure with a net loss of 3.4 million jobs. So what does July 21 letter-writer Jefferson Lewis propose? An “even larger stimulus” to make up for jobs the stimulus didn’t create. Isn’t that the famous definition of insanity: doing the same thing over...

exactly Jazzy, it's one thing to disagree with the premise of using borrowed money to help prop up the economy (unless that borrowed money is the result of the Bush tax cuts, funny how that works), it's quite another to stubbonly say that pumping hundreds of billions of $ into the struggling State governments doesn't help save jobs.
It seems that for some of us around here 9.5% unemployment isn't high enough.

Sorry Chalvey, I pulled this straight from the Ks.gov website. Maybe you can ask these folks if they think this stimulous was a 'complete fialure' as you put it.
"Twenty-seven state and local agencies will receive $11,534,125 in Justice Assistance Grants during the next 24 months. The grant program supports communities in their efforts to hire and retain criminal justice personnel. The funds will create five full time positions and will help retain all or a portion of 112 existing positions. In addition, the grant funds will reduce anticipated furlough days for approximately 1,484 employees. The grant program will help maintain and strengthen resources for law enforcement, prosecution, and corrections programs."

... about the only other thing that's needed is to require that the procedure room be filled with protestors to call the women who still want an abortion whores and baby-killers.
Abortion legislation
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon got it right by allowing Senate Bill 793 to become law. This law pulls back the curtain on the abortion industry just enough to allow women to make informed decisions. In my opinion, abortions in Missouri will be drastically reduced. Jim Wilcox Lee’s Summit
incessant screaming about illegal immigration (last I looked a misdemeanor) while accepting the lowest bid to get your house painted/roofed/cleaned is the height of hypocrisy.
Employers at fault
I was among the hundreds of people who were protesting Arizona’s immigration law last month. To those who say “illegal is illegal” I would like to point out that we would not have the problem facing us if for years American employers had not been looking the other way and hiring people illegally...
GH - some of us view investments as a risk/reward equation. The letter writer wants to recieve all of the rewards without accepting any of the risk.

BP dividends needed
I am wondering whether I am the only person in the metropolitan area who is concerned about the lack of payment of the dividends for the BP stockholders because of the gulf tragedy. Being an 81-year-old retired person and a two-time survivor of cancer, I am dependent on the quarterly dividend pa...
sorry folks, as investors in the company that is responsible for the mess in the Gulf, you get to pay for the clean-up. If it takes your dividends to do it, that's part of the risk.
You have enjoyed spectaular dividends when the going was good, did you not think that if the going went south, so would the dividends?

What other misdemeanor offenses are we going to spend billions to enforce?
Illegal immigration
I was appalled when I read the article about President Barack Obama filing suit against Arizona. (7/7, A1, “Lawsuit is filed against Arizona; Obama administration says setting this type of policy is federal responsibility”) I think illegal immigrants are breaking laws just by being in this coun...

Truth in tea parties
In response to Dawn Olney (4/20, Letters), I agree that bad behavior should be denounced, and it has been by members of both parties. But you should know recent polls show significant percentages of tea party members identify themselves as independents or Democrats. And a website has been ident...

Minimalist lifestyle
I declare here that I am a free man and a patriot. I am debt free. I have willingly cut back on my labors and passed on career advancement to avoid paying higher taxes. I am resentful of tax-and-spend policies in which I have no voice. I resent that my tax money is spent on illegal war and tort...

How do those holiday dinners go at the Kee household? Does anyone actually sit down and eat? My guess is no one stays past the initial 'greeting' Kee offers.
Nature’s beautiful trees
The cherry trees are in full bloom, and they are a beautiful sight. As I stand near them and enjoy their beauty, I notice one alarming quality: There are no bees to pollinate them. The insecticide we use knows no boundaries between good and evil. So my advice to you is be careful of the amount ...

Obama merits support
I have great difficulty understanding the strong criticisms of President Barack Obama. I hear almost-violent general opposition to his ideas, but very few specifics. He has proposed much-needed changes that have been opposed by many who should know better. There is no question that our health c...

Obama trauma on U.S.
Within a year, the full weight of the President Barack Obama disaster has become apparent. The Democratic mantra, "the stimulus saved the economy," is a lie. The stimulus is nothing more than years of pent-up, pork-barrel spending financed on a sea of borrowed cash. While schools close and unem...

Runaway spending
We are angry, yes, Martin Kaynan (4/12, Letters), but hardly confused or gullible. We were angry at President George W. Bush and the Republican elected representatives for abandoning conservative spending principles and allowing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to...
