This is lovely Wil; a perfect Christmas gift. Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.
From the Vault: surrounded by the joy of the season
In December of 2001, Anne I were really struggling financially. It had already been a pretty lousy year, as far as work went, and after September 11th, things only got worse. As Christmas got closer, it was clear that we simply couldn't afford to put many things under the tree for our kids, let...
Hah! Although I'd seen the "Shamwow Jam," (also a nice bit of silliness), this one was new to me. Thanks for warming up a very cold Maine day with some gigggles!
for all you last-minute shoppers out there...
While you're out doing your last minute holiday shopping, you may happen upon a little device known as The Slap Chop. You may have seen it on TV, and you may have heard that it purports to: "Chop up vegetables, nuts, & fruits, quickly and easily" with just a few simple slaps. And who doesn't lik...
Wil, ow! I really hope you start feeling better.
Your post did trigger memory for me...I tend to sneeze in series of 3s or 4s; my (younger) sister once commented to me that she was sure sneezing kills brain cells. I am still sometimes convinced that she wasn't just trying to mess with my head. Had she but known what sneezing can do to recouperating ribs!
pour it in my hand for a dime
I woke up this morning and for the first time since I provided experimental proof of the First Law of Motion, I wasn't in any pain or discomfort. "Oh good," I thought, "Things are looking up! Maybe I won't have to load myself up with stupid painkillers today!" I got out of bed, grabbed a cup ...
Many happy returns Wil! (And a most excellent photo...)
castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually
(Epic thanks to WWdN reader Miss Kitty who took this, made me look cooler than I am, and gave me permission to post it on my blog.)
David Sedaris is indeed wonderful live! I saw him around 7+ years ago now (he had a terrible cold and still did a great reading). When he signed my copy of *Me Talk Pretty Someday* as a gift for my husband, I stupidly/nervously/star-struckedly said something along the lines of "sorry you're sick, my husband is a doctor," and then added once my brain caught up with my mouth "of philosophy." He was very kind about the whole thing! It is always cool when an idol understands blather.
i saw david sedaris last night
We saw David Sedaris last night. He's the reason I'm a writer, so I was pretty excited to see him for the first time. I was not disappointed. We sat in the balcony of a sold-out Royce Hall at UCLA, and listened to him read for about 90 minutes. A few things struck me during the performance: He d...
I've been struggling with my brain regarding my dissertation in precisely the ways you describe. I find that agressive yard work helps...taking out frustrations on stupid, stupid weeds. Also, your blog always brings a smile to my face and the renewed determination to just finish already! (Then it will be "Dr. 3Kats" to all and sundry.)
how to create your very own ogre deathcrotch
Yesterday, I told some friends of mine who are writers that I feel this need to write, and I certainly want to write, but my brains aren't cooperating with me at all. I asked them for advice, and was relieved to learn that I'm not the only writer (who doesn't feel like a writer at the moment) wh...
Oddly, my sister and were talking about this kind of bad audience experience yesterday. And we find, no matter how obnoxious that other person is being, that it's really hard for us to confront that for spoiling the concert/play/etc for the rest of us. Maybe mamma raised her girls up *too* politely. Kudos, Wil, for at least making the attempt. I bet many fellow non-dicks in the audience appreciated the effort.
bring on the night . . . and the assholes
Anne and I took Ryan to see Elvis Costello and The Police at the Hollywood Bowl last night. We bought our tickets months ago, and got the best seats we could afford. We took the shuttle from the Zoo to the Bowl, and were in our seats about ten minutes before Elvis and The Impostors took to the s...
Lego Wesley is always allowed to hang out with adults.
Introducing Lego Wesley Crusher
This was given to me as a gift at the Phoenix Comicon. Isn't it cool? Sometimes, I sit here and look at it, and I'm tempted to call up my friends and say, "Hey, I was just wondering if you have a customized Lego figure of your Star Trek character on your desk." Then I realize how pathetic th...
Hi Wil,
Long time lurker, first time poster...this is OT, but saw on twitter that you are in NYC. If you liked Spamalot, try Curtains, especially for David Hyde Pierce. His pleasure in performing on stage is a joy to watch.
Happiest first printing is nearly sold out!
When I went to pack up a bunch of Happiest Days orders this morning, I realized that this totally awesome tower of books, representing much of the first printing, has been reduced to just three boxes, and one of those is only half full. I'm probably going to have to order a second printing for t...
