I love The Simpsons. I decided to remain in the dark when I heard that Matt Greoning revealed which actual Springfield the show considers home for Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. Except that the jerkasses on NPR just blurted... Continue reading

Dear Prominent Scholar in My Field: Thanks for building a body of research around a series of personal interviews and proprietary sources that only you have access to. It makes it nearly impossible to replicate your work and build upon... Continue reading

There are several pieces of plastic flatware in my office kitchen that someone repeatedly uses, washes and puts in the sink drainer to dry. Why does this even happen? It's disposable for a reason. There's something inherently disgusting about the... Continue reading

Dear Future Daughter-in-Law: When you graciously invite me over to dinner, I promise never to insist on sitting in your seat at the table next to your husband. Sincerely, kayteadee Continue reading

Today one of my students said, "People who go to college are exposed to different ideas and such." My female students use this phrase at least once a week. It drives me crazy because it makes them sound stupid. To... Continue reading

For the last three days, I've had the looming feeling that I might suddenly get a wicked leg cramp. I don't know what's more irritating: the uncomfortable twitchy sensation in my legs or the anticipation of the cramp that never... Continue reading

As a stroller user, I hate that too. It's so inconsiderate. I'll add that I hate it when people insist on using a monstrously large jogging stroller as a regular stroller in inappropriate places--no one needs off-roading stroller capabilities at a mall or a museum.

Our monthly water bills have increased because of the mind-boggling amount of laundry that the baby produces. Normal people would search for and repair leaky pipes and dripping faucets, adjust water consumption behavior, or install water-saving hardware. Rather than do... Continue reading

I used the last bit of a bottle of shower gel this morning. I'll be using the remnants of the bottle of similarly scented lotion for the foreseeable future. Why? Because Bath and Body Works can't package their products so... Continue reading

Dear Sneaky Bitch: I've been standing in this horrifically long, slow coffee line playing with my phone but my peripheral vision works just fine. That's why I told you to go to the back of the line and rolled my... Continue reading

The university that I'm teaching at this semester requires three separate logins and passwords for each of the different information systems on campus. One login is an intuitive, logical combination of my first and last names. The other two are... Continue reading

My skin has gone from normal to oily and greasey in the T-zone in the last week. I haven't had a pimple since I was 15 and now I've got two. Having an effective, reliable skin care regimine in place... Continue reading

Agreed, blaugra. I just really, really don't care what other people did over the weekend. But even more so, I hate when people ask because I have to come up with something more interesting than laying around the house in my pajamas, eating bacon, and playing with the baby.

I'm doing Weight Watchers because I put on an embarassing amount of weight while pregant that didn't miraculously melt away. The good news is that I'm within 5 pounds of my pre-pregnancy weight. The bad news? Healthy eating habits make... Continue reading

All the pregnancy books advised that I should stock up on maxi pads to use postpartum. Now that the bloodletting is over, I'm left with a lifetime supply of pads that I'll never use. Can I cash these in for... Continue reading

Dear Labor and Delivery Nurse: Telling me to "push hard" for three hours really pissed me off. Did I appear to be half-assing my pushes? I assure you I was not. I would have told you to go fuck yourself... Continue reading

Thanks to one of the doctors at my OB/GYN's office, I needlessly spent much of Thursday worried/crying/freaking out about having a c-section because I was told that my kid was in a breech position. Apparently after medical school and 20... Continue reading

I like to sit on the deck on summer evenings to relax. The water trickles in the fountain and the birds chirp until the crickets come out. It's quiet and peaceful. Or at least it was until my neighbors decided... Continue reading

It was 90 degrees yesterday and my university still refuses to turn on the air conditioning. Nothing broadcasts competent authority on a lecture topic like sweating through your dress while standing in front of 37 students. And this wasn't just... Continue reading
