FYI - the impact of the state average annual wage on workers' comp comes from the last legislative session (Senate Bill 5675) which deleted the old statutory formula for minimum monthly benefits and replaced it with a flat 15% of the state average monthly wage (derived from the annual wage), plus credits for spouse and children. The old minimum benefits maxed out around $322 depending on marriage and kids, whereas now a married breadwinner with five kids sees a minimum of $592. (The new average monthly wage is about $3549, multiplied by 15%, with a $10 credit for spouse and each child up to five). Pretty good jump for those getting the minimum. But this will impact mostly small, mostly seasonal, mostly intermittent employment and those small businesses with injured workers may see a jump in benefit charges.
