The Goldberg Prentice building is interesting as sculpture and unarguably an advanced engineering achievement for its time – though no where approaching the reinforced concrete work Luigi Nervi accomplished decades earlier. As a hospital however it was a failure from the beginning and a monument only to the architect’s ego. The column free space provided by the engineering was wasted in unresponsive medical planning and inefficient pie-shaped patient rooms. Utilities and services were all but ignored and the constraining low floor to floor heights make it extremely difficult to retrofit. If an example of Goldberg’s architectural statement and place in architectural history should be preserved, it possibly should be Marina City which at least functions within its imposed form. Bad buildings should not be preserved simply because they or novel forms or creative use of materials.
