When we moved into our new house (need to post about this, but we're about to fix the kitchen, so maybe after that), it came with an old but neat fridge that we actually liked. It was a step up from our super simple one at our old rental. We loved the door feature where you could pop it open to access milk that the kids frequently ask for. Sadly, this past Sunday, it died. This was right after my parents arrived, and with 2 kids, no fridge is really bad news. We got two coolers going, buying ice daily,... Continue reading

Yay! My parents safely arrived from Tokyo to SFO. Until a few days before departure, we weren't sure if my dad could make it due to some health concerns, but he rallied, and I'm so happy. I'm most happy to share my kids with them, both at such fun ages. Tesla is mature, creative, and ready to share her girl world, while Aila is a comedian and full of 3-year old wonder. And they get to see our new house. Next Tuesday, our architect is coming to discuss new kitchen designs so that will be fun to share. Otherwise, we're... Continue reading

When Dav dusted off our RV for BM, he found that mice had been partying plenty within. He eventually found a sad carcass. After much cleaning, off Dav went to BM for 8 days, then came back and completely emptied out the RV in our garage as we're saying goodbye to it (Monster). A few days ago, I walked into Dav's "mancave" that is a room off the garage, and found a scurrying little shadow run away. Later, Dav told me he did find 1 tiny mouse had survived the BM desert conditions, made it back in the RV (who... Continue reading

Aila's is now a preschooler! She's at the same school that Tesla was at with the same lovely teacher. First few days are just a few hours with mama. Then gradually, more hours, then without mama. She was fine the first few days, then clingy when I started dropping her off, but only 1 day of crying so far (Tesla had many!). Below is a pic of Tesla on her first day (right), and Aila on her first full day without mama (left). Notice I got Aila to wear a similar outfit? But instead of blankie, she has her sister!... 2 sides of Tesla. Beautiful and goofy. I can see at this age both her old self and an emerging mature self. I hope she never loses her goofiness : ) Continue reading

Jeremy is about to head to the playa to join Dav. Me and the gals made Dav a little gift box for Jeremy to deliver: drawings from the gals, and from me, seaweed, boiled octopus, hijiki salad, natto, and instant miso soup, plus chilled green tea. Do you see Aila wrote her name? Continue reading

I never knew how drawn I'd be to a dusty desert until going to BM. The landscape is beautiful, and is one of the top things that draw me there. I love the dust storms, the colors, the smell. This video captures some of that beauty. I hear it rained and gates are closed. Dav's been there several days now inside, while many have to patiently wait outside for gates to reopen. I admit now I'm jealous of Dav. I love arriving early (to set up a theme camp) and savoring those few days before the huge crowds arrive. Before,... Continue reading

Dav left for the playa last night; I'm staying home with the kids since I went last year with my brother. He's going early for the "Harajuku" camp he's part of, but even earlier in case our unpredictable monster RV has yet more problems and he needs to fix it in Reno. So far all is good! I miss him already, and I'm sick with a bug, so had been feeling particularly sad. BM is where we got married. This Wed (we use Wed at BM as our anniversary, no matter what date it is) will be our 9th! And... Continue reading

Delayed but we pulled off a perfectly Tesla bday party. A private horse riding session thanks to our Auntie June in Pacifica, followed by a sleepover. Dav was in NC; I thought I could handle all. Luckily Michelle helped tons, and Lizzie came over to help for the sleepover. As soon as we came home from horse riding, the gals were ravished. I cooked as fast as I could while they milled around for food. 1 min into dinner, Aila promptly spilled an overfilled cup of milk all over the table and onto the floor. Next I had to be... [pic is Tesla's "Welcome Kitten" sign on our sidewalk.] I've been waiting for this moment for quite some time. Not living with animals is just weird for me. They bring a special dimension to daily life. When beloved Kats and Waka passed away, we decided to wait until Aila was a bit "stable" as in we could ask her to be gentle etc. And today, tada! We have 2 new members of the Yaginuma family. We almost got 3, but my practical side won. No names yet. Spanking new sibling kitties. Per SPCA advice, we are keeping them in our... Continue reading

Aila's birthday is May 20th. We did have a party! I'm just late posting about it (so I can later show her that many people celebrated!) I can't believe my baby is 3, and just months away from entering preschool. I vividly remember Tesla's first day at preschool. It was such a shift not to be with her during the day, her creating bonds with other kids and adults, creating a whole new world on her own. And now Aila will take that step. Time really really zoomed by. I treasure all of it, and I'm so happy she is... Continue reading

Before I started my new job, I took Tesla out of school for a mommy and Tesla day. I had full support of her awesome teacher who gave me a wink-wink, because he knew how happy it would make Tesla. We started by a horse walk down by the beach since Tesla loves loves horses. T has taken lessons before so she got to ride all by herself. My horse kicked hers when we were on the beach, and there was a little bit of galloping. I was impressed that T kept her cool and quickly regained control. After that,... Continue reading

Much to catch up on since the move, but we're slowing settling in. Now that we have hardwood floors throughout the house (a big positive yay!), Aila has been riding her tricycle around in the house. Recently, I found her using her lego car parts for makeshift roller skates, so we went to go buy her a set. She was so pleased to have knee pads too, and basically wore the gear all the time, even for sleeping. She's pretty good hobbling around the house on her skates now. Exploring the Mission: there are times when I'm walking around with... Continue reading

When we moved (another blog post that's coming), Aila found her old elephant outfit in a box, and took a new liking to it. It barely fits her, but she loves it. However, when she wears it now, she becomes rather annoying, so we started calling her Aila the Annoying Elephant when she's in it. This is cute. But then...refusing to eat dinner until dressed: When I had to take her to school with Tesla one morning, she refused to leave unless as an elephant. Fine. But she wailed all the way there, and when another small child tried to... Continue reading

Kokochi has been full of posts about my kids, well, because that's what's important to me. Today though, this is about me : ) First, I left Evernote last week. It was definitely a difficult decision as I've been working with incredibly smart and creative people. I very much believe in what Evernote is doing, and will be an Evenote user for the rest of my life. But I'm super picky about how work fits into my life & family, and the commute became too much. Plus, I missed working with Japan which hadn't been my focus. However, I am... Continue reading

I did nothing tonight, other than feed the gals. I announced it was jammie time, and T took charge. She got out their one matching jammie outfit. They brushed their teeth together. I walked into the bedroom and read a fairy story. Mama duty done. Tesla was pretty awesome tonight. She actually helped cook too! It was all so cute that I made them pose, then do a funny pose. Dav's half-sister Colleen and her hubby celebrated their birthdays in style this past weekend. It was a lovely warm day, and their backyard was full of decor, a buffet of food, and a circle of drums. Colleen is part of a drumming group, and this was my first time to see a snippet of what it's all about. There is something special about drumming...any human can relate. Aila was smitten and smacked drums and tried all the accompanying array of instruments laying around. Oh, and the dancing. Best part was just seeing kids with their cousins and family. Aila is... A tad belated, but Happy Girl's Day! Now I'm seeing how fun it is to take the same pic every year...and get to see the gals growing up. I love this first picture; shows T and Aila's different personalities. And thank you to my mom for gifting us these gorgeous hinasama dolls. First row when T was born, second when Aila was. We will put them out every year, and treasure them. Hinasama 2012 2010 2009 2008 Continue reading

Tesla was Marilyn Monroe in her after-school program's annual performance. I was asked to curl her hair, which I knew would require skills and tools I didn't have, so I took her to a salon. The after-school program staff decked her out in a dress and put make-up on her. I recalled the very first time Tesla performed, when she was in pre-school in the same program, she was in the middle front wearing a bear suit, and for the whole performance, sucked her thumb. It was cute, but clearly she was bewildered about the whole stage experiene. Well, this... Continue reading

Tesla took a few art classes at the SF Children's Art Center in Fort Mason when she was about two and a half. She loved it, and I loved seeing her enjoy it, and getting a stack of art at the end. Now, Aila is taking the same class. I still can't believe she's already at this age. Following the steps of her bigger sister, but delighted in her own way. She loves the play doh part of it. I take her Friday mornings, and cherish this time where I still get to be mommy bringing her to her special... Continue reading

On Wednesdays and Fridays, I take Tesla to school, and bring Aila with us. Both gals love this. Tesla loves to show off Aila and be big sister, and Aila loves to feel part of the community, which she really is. Even the school principal knows her! With Tesla's friends, Aila gets to be the center of attention. First, Aila makes sure to bring her backpack. In this case, it's filled with her blankie, a toy car, and small stuffies. As her posse gathers around her, Aila gets to share her goodies. I love how the gals make Aila feel... Continue reading

We have a drought looming since during winter, we should have many rainy days, but instead, we have summer-like weather. While we enjoy it, I worry that this is just going to get worse each year with climate change. This weekend, it finally drizzled. Barely enough for trees and grass to soak up much, but Aila was delighted and begged to go out so she could wear her raincoat and use her umbrella. Tesla was happy staying indoors; yet another example of how these gals are so opposite. So while Dav and T stayed cozy at home, Aila and I... Continue reading
