I did nothing tonight, other than feed the gals. I announced it was jammie time, and T took charge. She got out their one matching jammie outfit. They brushed their teeth together. I walked into the bedroom and read a fairy story. Mama duty done. Tesla was pretty awesome tonight. She actually helped cook too! It was all so cute that I made them pose, then do a funny pose. Dav's half-sister Colleen and her hubby celebrated their birthdays in style this past weekend. It was a lovely warm day, and their backyard was full of decor, a buffet of food, and a circle of drums. Colleen is part of a drumming group, and this was my first time to see a snippet of what it's all about. There is something special about drumming...any human can relate. Aila was smitten and smacked drums and tried all the accompanying array of instruments laying around. Oh, and the dancing. Best part was just seeing kids with their cousins and family. Aila is... A tad belated, but Happy Girl's Day! Now I'm seeing how fun it is to take the same pic every year...and get to see the gals growing up. I love this first picture; shows T and Aila's different personalities. And thank you to my mom for gifting us these gorgeous hinasama dolls. First row when T was born, second when Aila was. We will put them out every year, and treasure them. Hinasama 2012 2010 2009 2008 Continue reading

Tesla was Marilyn Monroe in her after-school program's annual performance. I was asked to curl her hair, which I knew would require skills and tools I didn't have, so I took her to a salon. The after-school program staff decked her out in a dress and put make-up on her. I recalled the very first time Tesla performed, when she was in pre-school in the same program, she was in the middle front wearing a bear suit, and for the whole performance, sucked her thumb. It was cute, but clearly she was bewildered about the whole stage experiene. Well, this... Continue reading

Tesla took a few art classes at the SF Children's Art Center in Fort Mason when she was about two and a half. She loved it, and I loved seeing her enjoy it, and getting a stack of art at the end. Now, Aila is taking the same class. I still can't believe she's already at this age. Following the steps of her bigger sister, but delighted in her own way. She loves the play doh part of it. I take her Friday mornings, and cherish this time where I still get to be mommy bringing her to her special... Continue reading

On Wednesdays and Fridays, I take Tesla to school, and bring Aila with us. Both gals love this. Tesla loves to show off Aila and be big sister, and Aila loves to feel part of the community, which she really is. Even the school principal knows her! With Tesla's friends, Aila gets to be the center of attention. First, Aila makes sure to bring her backpack. In this case, it's filled with her blankie, a toy car, and small stuffies. As her posse gathers around her, Aila gets to share her goodies. I love how the gals make Aila feel... Continue reading

We have a drought looming since during winter, we should have many rainy days, but instead, we have summer-like weather. While we enjoy it, I worry that this is just going to get worse each year with climate change. This weekend, it finally drizzled. Barely enough for trees and grass to soak up much, but Aila was delighted and begged to go out so she could wear her raincoat and use her umbrella. Tesla was happy staying indoors; yet another example of how these gals are so opposite. So while Dav and T stayed cozy at home, Aila and I... Continue reading

This is what just happened: For me, it was a big deal. I splurged on this lovely bowl when I first lived on my own in Tokyo making my own living. I truly treasured it. Tonight, Aila climbed up on some shelves, and mistakenly broke it. No need to chastise her other than let her know I was sad, and not to climb up where she shouldn't. Neither T nor Aila could understand how my treasure had been lost. Truthfully, it was more than just a bowl; it was my statement to me about what I digged that I could... Continue reading

Texted to me by our awesome nanny Sarah: "She just woke up from her nap looking like this. I found your make-up bag in bed with her!" I see she added her plastic toy shoes and her fav butterfly wings. She loves that strawberry dress, so as soon as it's washed and back in her drawer, she picks it out to wear like she did today. She's even got a pose! This is 2.5 year old Aila in all her spunk and glory. Continue reading

So...the other day, Dav took Tesla on a motorcycle ride. Really. I suspect the normal response of a wife/mama should be, "no way," but this is Dav I married. It's also legal. And to Tesla's delight, she got her very own gear. For now, Dav takes her just around the neighborhood to the coffee shop or library. The goal is for her to learn how to ride behind daddy safely, and maybe at some point drive her to school. Can you imagine an elementary school kid riding up on a motorcycle, wearing her leather jacket to recess?? I trust Dav.... Continue reading

2014, the year of the horse, is about as perfect as can be for Tesla and Aila who adore horses. Or really, more like Tesla loves them, so Aila loves them too. We created our card late, with my iPhone, whipped it up quickly, but I'm glad we got something. My hobby is to collect our annual cards: 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 A lot I'd like to note, but we are throwing a party in a few hours so need to get stuff done...sort of my life right now. So hard to focus on the documenting I... Continue reading

Here is Ono Yoko's new video. She is 80 years old, totallly bad ass. I'd like to be like her when I'm her age. Inspirational. My mom and dad are inspirational too. Especially as a woman, to be as elegant as my mom is is at her age, I'd be super happy. I definitely see what both my mom and dad taught and lived by in me. I'm happy to pass that on. My goal now is to be a bad ass inspirational role model when I'm 80. Continue reading

Hrm, where do I start with Camp Tipsy? It's a really fun lake-side event started by Chicken John. He brings crappy stuff for everyone to build artisic floating...things. He provides a full-blown, well-organized workshop for anyone to use to build their inspired idea. And people do. Over the years, we've seen things that were beautiful...a floating bar, a hot tub, a swing (Dav's), 2 story high contraptions, a ferris wheel, floating bedroom settings, an English tea table, a burleseque stage with performers, so much more. Chicken and his team set the stage, and participants build. The event ends with a... Continue reading

I lamented to my parents that it was unlikely I'd make it back to Japan with the kids this year, and asked if they'd consider visiting. It's not cheap, and at their age, not an easy feat, but very quickly, they said yes. Much to my delight, we had 2 weeks with my parents recently. Especially for the kids, and Aila at this precious phase, I wanted my folks to see them. ↓ It's these kind of everyday interactions that I treasure. Bedtime reading. My dad read every night to me, I remember. Initially, Aila was a tad shy. She... Continue reading

Strawberry Music Festival, a bluegrass festival up at Camp Mather, is a lot more than just music. We went for several years in a row, then took a break, and this year went back. The weather was perfect, and gosh, it's just really, really pretty up there with old trees, a meadow, and a lake. While I definitely dig good bluegrass, the best part for me is that Strawberry is super kid-friendly. Everyone is relaxed and happy. Kids of all ages run around free, playing with each other. Strawberry used to kick-off our summer camping season, but I may no... Continue reading

↑ With her Great-Grandmother Maria. Lucky girl to be so close to her. Aila turned 2 on May 20th, so I'm catching up here, but I want to note another milestone for our little one who is growing up so quickly. Seriously, because Aila is child #2 and we have that much more going on, time is zooming by. She runs and jumps, is communicating with words (along with her cute babbling when she wants to tell longer stories), and loves to play jokes on us. She is growing right in front of our eyes - duh, but still, it's... Continue reading

Today, I found this bounty in Tesla's backback (of course, she forgot to mention it to me; luckily I fished it out in time for dinner). This is from the school garden (they have two), and they are introducing edible flowers now. I love Rosa Parks Elementary school. It didn't hit me until recently that with the age difference between Tesla and Aila, we will be spending a decade involved with this school. And I'm quite ok with that. : ) Continue reading

I had to put Wakame to down a little over a week ago. I still look for her when I go to our bedroom, or when I come home from work. I still have an urge to make sure her water bowl is clean and full, and my eyes automatically go to where her insulin and needles are for the daily routine I’ve been doing. She had been getting sicker over the past 6 months so I knew it was coming, and had even made arrangements to put her down twice before that were false alarms. When her brother Katsuo... Every Tuesday, I take Aila with me when I take Tesla & Nora to school. Aila loves this. She tries the morning rajio taiso (morning calisthenics) with everyone (video). She is so happy to be part of Tesla's routine. Sometimes she joins on Friday when I volunteer in the morning, and she sits and waits, happy at a "desk." Here they are, Tesla guiding her little sister into school. By now, everyone knows Aila. Even the Principal enjoys her when she explores the hallway. Continue reading
