I came home from a community meeting this morning to find Dav working in the garage, and Aila like this. She had gym class, and while I got the dino slippers off her, I let her wear the dino outfit to class. She was happy. The instructor didn't bat an eye : ) Continue reading

Last Friday, I picked up Tesla at school, skipping the After School Program so we could have our 1:1 play date. I decided we'd go to the City Hall since it's rather fancy and open to the public. We went to the records office and looked up our house, seeing the kitchen remodel permit, and confirming so far, there have been no public complaints logged against the property : ) There were maybe 5 or 6 groups doing their wedding pictures. We then climbed the stairs, higher than I'd ever been, and we witnessed a wonderful actual ceremony going on,... Continue reading

Aila carries around a backpack to preschool, to home, then to her bed. She doesn't need a backpack, but she likes to be like her sister and friends at Rosa Parks who all have backpacks. It's heavy. I've known it's full of, shall we say, various things. Today, I got GranMarie to video the excavation of Aila's backpack. What's in Aila's backpack? She carries this preschool everyday even tho it just sits on her cubby. from Kokochi on Vimeo. Continue reading

Driving the girls home from school the other day, Tesla's conversation went to what happens to me when she is an adult. I told her I'd be her mother forever. She asked what would happen if she died? I replied I'd still be her mother, no matter what, and she would be in my heart. And in fact, always, both Tesla and Aila are in my heart, close to me. Aila then blurted out from her car seat, "we're NOT in your heart. We're right here. We're sitting back here." Indeed. Right here, right now. Continue reading

Today was Nihonmachi Little Friends' big performance day. For the first time, both Tesla and Aila are dancing. But, since Aila is a preschooler, I was supposed to drop Aila off 2 hours after dropping off Tesla. So, Aila and I went to brunch! Dav is prepping the video of Aila's adorable dance, and Tesla's energetic awesome dance. Having 2 kids in the performance was fun! Continue reading

This past Sunday, Tesla participated in a Japanese speech contest where she spoke about things she likes all in Japanese. She practiced over a month every day, repeating until she was comfortable. We are so proud of her. She wrote her speech in English, then her teacher put it into Japanese. There were some new words for her. When she did the whole speech for the Regenbogens and Jessica, and they wanted to know what she said, so she interpreted it into English. I was so happy to see her thinking of her speech in Japanese, then sentence by sentence... Continue reading

This year Tesla pretty much knew how to set it up, but the difficulty was keeping Aila's toddler hands off of the delicate dolls. As much as they are "dolls" they are very expensive and made with such details that they are little art pieces. T made sakura mochi and origami hina dolls at school. Here is Aila's version from preschool. Continue reading

Aila's valentines to us family. She's so proud to write her name. Any time she spots an "a" it's A for Aila to her : ) I like how in this family portrait, I'm the tallest! Her note cracks me up. To Daddy: "Thank you for working, I like to go to work with you." Except she's never been to work with him. And for me, in Japanese, "Mama, chicken, broccoli, spicy, thank you!" I love this verbal but not really logical age of 3. She lives in such a rich imaginary world. Now that I have more breathing time... Continue reading

Tesla has been taking gymnastics lessons. We watched a movie about Gabby Douglas, then the kids wanted to play gymnastics. Tesla got her doll out to do cool jumps and tricks, while Aila got her swimming suit on and did what she could on our furniture. Here is Tesla teaching her a move, then Aila reenacting. (Notice the holes in our walls. It's our house-wide insulation project which is worth while, but geez, we have holes everywhere on our relatively newly painted walls. You can see the shoji room divider that is trying to hide a wall of plastic that... Continue reading

Now that I have more time, I try to pick up T at the end of school some Fridays, skipping after-school program. It's a nice snippet of time, when Aila isn't around since she's still at preschool, and I'm not tempted to do other tasks. We're out in town to have fun. Today, we went to Coit Tower. I hadn't been there forever. It was touristy, but a short and beautiful visit. Then we had ice cream, picked up Aila, and went home. Continue reading

Hi Walt!! We were near GG park, so went to here: http://sanfrancyclo.com Tesla got a used bike for a nice deal. Aila's was new, and was more than double of Tesla's so wasn't cheap, but we went for it since she was so in love with it. Hugs!!

The weather has been warm and enticing to get the kids out into the city. With the long weekend, we enjoyed Sunday evening; a tad late as we had to wait for Aila to wake up from her nap, but once up, Aila scootered and Tesla skateboarded along the embarcadaro. These are the moments I relish how our gals are growing up as S.F. city gals. Their casual memories of simple kid fun are at beautiful landmarks (the bridge lights, the water) with great food to grab (as we did at the Ferry Bldg.), and the open space for kids... Our biggest accomplishment is we bought a house in SF. Survived that with luck and a good agent! Aila started pre-school and loves it. Tesla is getting really creative and good at Minecraft : ) And Dav has enjoyed his work at Live Nation (albeit with a few surprises mixed in). Cheers to a new year! Continue reading

The kids have 2 weeks off, and so does Dav, so we're all excited to do a staycation! Lorene is visiting, the tree is up, we have yummy dinner plans for Christmas eve, and we are hoping for a lot of lounging, eating, and a few touristy fun here and there. To start off, we visited my brother's fam for the annual Christmas light show his street is famous for. Ian's festive house. Tesla is already jaded about Santa (not that we ever really pushed the whole concept), but she still went up with Aila. This year's Santa was covered... Continue reading

When we moved into our new house (need to post about this, but we're about to fix the kitchen, so maybe after that), it came with an old but neat fridge that we actually liked. It was a step up from our super simple one at our old rental. We loved the door feature where you could pop it open to access milk that the kids frequently ask for. Sadly, this past Sunday, it died. This was right after my parents arrived, and with 2 kids, no fridge is really bad news. We got two coolers going, buying ice daily,... Continue reading

Yay! My parents safely arrived from Tokyo to SFO. Until a few days before departure, we weren't sure if my dad could make it due to some health concerns, but he rallied, and I'm so happy. I'm most happy to share my kids with them, both at such fun ages. Tesla is mature, creative, and ready to share her girl world, while Aila is a comedian and full of 3-year old wonder. And they get to see our new house. Next Tuesday, our architect is coming to discuss new kitchen designs so that will be fun to share. Otherwise, we're... Continue reading

When Dav dusted off our RV for BM, he found that mice had been partying plenty within. He eventually found a sad carcass. After much cleaning, off Dav went to BM for 8 days, then came back and completely emptied out the RV in our garage as we're saying goodbye to it (Monster). A few days ago, I walked into Dav's "mancave" that is a room off the garage, and found a scurrying little shadow run away. Later, Dav told me he did find 1 tiny mouse had survived the BM desert conditions, made it back in the RV (who... Continue reading

Aila's is now a preschooler! She's at the same school that Tesla was at with the same lovely teacher. First few days are just a few hours with mama. Then gradually, more hours, then without mama. She was fine the first few days, then clingy when I started dropping her off, but only 1 day of crying so far (Tesla had many!). Below is a pic of Tesla on her first day (right), and Aila on her first full day without mama (left). Notice I got Aila to wear a similar outfit? But instead of blankie, she has her sister!... Jeremy is about to head to the playa to join Dav. Me and the gals made Dav a little gift box for Jeremy to deliver: drawings from the gals, and from me, seaweed, boiled octopus, hijiki salad, natto, and instant miso soup, plus chilled green tea. Do you see Aila wrote her name? Continue reading

I never knew how drawn I'd be to a dusty desert until going to BM. The landscape is beautiful, and is one of the top things that draw me there. I love the dust storms, the colors, the smell. This video captures some of that beauty. I hear it rained and gates are closed. Dav's been there several days now inside, while many have to patiently wait outside for gates to reopen. I admit now I'm jealous of Dav. I love arriving early (to set up a theme camp) and savoring those few days before the huge crowds arrive. Before,... Continue reading

Dav left for the playa last night; I'm staying home with the kids since I went last year with my brother. He's going early for the "Harajuku" camp he's part of, but even earlier in case our unpredictable monster RV has yet more problems and he needs to fix it in Reno. So far all is good! I miss him already, and I'm sick with a bug, so had been feeling particularly sad. BM is where we got married. This Wed (we use Wed at BM as our anniversary, no matter what date it is) will be our 9th! And... Continue reading

Delayed but we pulled off a perfectly Tesla bday party. A private horse riding session thanks to our Auntie June in Pacifica, followed by a sleepover. Dav was in NC; I thought I could handle all. Luckily Michelle helped tons, and Lizzie came over to help for the sleepover. As soon as we came home from horse riding, the gals were ravished. I cooked as fast as I could while they milled around for food. 1 min into dinner, Aila promptly spilled an overfilled cup of milk all over the table and onto the floor. Next I had to be... [pic is Tesla's "Welcome Kitten" sign on our sidewalk.] I've been waiting for this moment for quite some time. Not living with animals is just weird for me. They bring a special dimension to daily life. When beloved Kats and Waka passed away, we decided to wait until Aila was a bit "stable" as in we could ask her to be gentle etc. And today, tada! We have 2 new members of the Yaginuma family. We almost got 3, but my practical side won. No names yet. Spanking new sibling kitties. Per SPCA advice, we are keeping them in our... Continue reading
