I didn't subscribe to the whole 'Vista is awful' thing and found Vista to be pretty good on the whole across a bunch of machines I used it on. That said, I witnessed others really struggling with Vista - much of which seemed down to the quality of drivers for their various bits of hardware.
Windows 7 is the real deal, though - no doubt about it. I've been using it exclusively since January this year across various machines, including a rather aged VAIO laptop circa 2005. It can only manage aero basic save for that, it runs just fine! :D
