I replaced about 60% of my front yard with a garden this year, and it was indeed a lot of work. I can't imagine trying to fill all that bare ground without some fast-growing non-natives, especially hostas and daylilies. Probably the most interesting effect of creating this new garden has been the increased contact with my neighbors - I think I've spent more time chatting with the neighbors this summer than in the previous 4 years combined!
