This is awesome.
Revitalizing a blouse with fabric dye
I am a devoted mender. Breathing new life into old clothes makes me feel so industrious. Usually, this involves something like replacing buttons or fixing straps, but when tragedy struck a white blouse I loved, a little more creativity was required. I had an embroidered linen top with white ...
Oh my God, are the tomato thief and the cantaloupe thief the same person?
http://ow.ly/cCe5o
for shame.
This week in the garden: Thieves
As a gardener, I have reconciled myself to fighting with nature. I know that I have to be vigilant against birds who would steal my seedlings and my blueberries. I suspect that our war with the squirrels will never end. But I don't lose much sleep over these tiny thieves. I don't begrudge th...
Honey Rhubarb Ice Cream
http://zoebakes.com/2012/05/15/honey-rhubarb-ice-cream/
You won't be sorry.
P.S. For the ice cream, I usually just use 3/4 cup honey and axe the sugar.
This week in the garden: weekend harvest
Our first tomatoes are here -- a small harvest, it's true, but hopefully just a preview of what's to come... We also picked strawberries, scallions, and rhubarb. We have a LOT of rhubarb. Any favorite recipe recommendations?
I love this color combo, and the gorgeous stitches make me excited to break out of my current stitch repertoire rut. Can't wait to see more progress.
Color play
Moss and ferns cowl in progress: I'm learning lots of new techniques in this cowl, the most fun so far being daisy stitch, shown here alternating in pink and gray...it has a kind of a granny feel now, but I think the finished product will be pretty cool.
This is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
Sakura Ni Poster for Bread for the City
Polygraph, a DC-based design studio, has produced its second annual limited edition print in celebration of the National Chery Blossom Festival. I think it is desperately beautiful. Not only is the poster exquisite, but 50% of sales will be donated to Bread for the City, a nonprofit that pro...
I think your work-in-progress installments are my favorite of all the posts on Idle Hands! It's so awesome watching the projects come together in a vicarious thrill kind of way. Also, this yarn is so lovely.
Work in progress: Springtime in Hollis
I started a new sweater for my neice using Teresa Cole's adorable Springtime in Hollis pattern. I love doing sweaters that are knit from the top down. Not only does this mean there are no seams (hurrah!), it also means you get to watch the work develop from a tiny strip of collar into a real g...
I'm obsessed with the photos in this post. I love them. That yarn is so butterscotch-y and delicious looking.
Finished project: The Mum Cowl
I am so pleased with this cowl. I modified the #13 Cowl by Faith Hale (from the Early Fall issue of Vogue Knitting) to make it wider, so that it can be looped twice to be nice and warm. You can see the full size here: I used Sam Spun Yarn in Marigold (bought at this year's Sheep and Wool...
Oooooh, I love the buttons on the Twinkle Hoodie! So fun for fall.
Ravelry roundup: Hoodies
The forecast for the next few days has the temperature dipping down into the 50s, which has me thinking of hoodies. When I was in college, my stylish roomate Janelle had the perfect hooded sweater -- styled like a sweatshirt, but made of a cashmere blend. Casual enough to wear anywhere, but lu...
I'll just put it out there that simmering apples in some sort of bourbon and then serving them over ice cream wouldn't be a crazy addition to something like, say, an annual shrimp boil.
This week in the garden
It's so colorful! Hollyhocks: Lilies: Passion flower: Hibiscus: And apples: Lots and lots of apples: We harvested the fruit from our apple tree on Saturday, and this was what our kitchen table looked like: I made my favorite apple cake today, but it's going to take a lot more than...
This post made me laugh out loud several times. Also, the picture of the little mantis on your finger is impossibly cute. Kind of like if "A Bug's Life" was real.
Mantids!
A few weeks ago, in the midst of an aphid invasion, I headed over to Frager's planning to buy some lady bugs. Despite their girly name and adorable appearance, lady bugs are fierce aphid predators. They were out of lady bugs at Frager's, but I got something even better. Lady bugs provide only...
Oh man. I am so looking forward to a tutorial from you on stuffed animal knitting. This is a skill I need to start perfecting before my future little nieces and nephews begin arriving.
Ravelry roundup: Softies
I'm starting my first knit stuffed animal, and I am super excited about it. Unfortunately, it's a surprise, so I can't share it with you quite yet, but I can show you some of the best softie patterns out there. Starting with this little lady: Georgia the Giraffe via Lion Brand The Bramble Ow...
It's time to confess that I have some pretty significant feelings of inadequacy and trepidation about cabling. But I'll tell you this, that hat is so, so cute. It makes me want to get over my anxiety by signing up for a class asap.
Ravelry roundup: Modern cable knits
First, let's back up. What is Ravelry? Ravelry is a free website that allows users to keep track of their yarn and projects. Why is it so great? 1) It has virtually every knitting and crochet pattern ever written, all searchable by keyword. This means that if you see a pattern in Vogue Knitti...
I just read the recipe for Grilled Portobello Stroganoff and immediately began searching for a day to make it for dinner. It. Looks. Amazing.
Welcome, spring!
Spring has sprung at our house. The flowers are growing so fast you could sit and watch them. And my cold weather crops are off to a strong start, if the birds don't get them first -- I've discovered that birds love romaine microgreens, but are not fans of spinach. We have peas growing righ...
This might be my favorite photo ever on this blog. Kind of makes me want to knit little hats for all my fruit.
World's tiniest hat for a perfect baby girl
A dear friend of ours just had her baby much earlier than expected. Happily, mom and baby are doing fine, but I wanted to send a little something to say how much they are in my thoughts. Ravelry to the rescue. I found this pattern by Carissa Browning (it comes in sizes small enough for a 2 pou...
Without a doubt, my favorite feature is your "works in progress." I love seeing your projects in various stages of completion and watching them come together. I'd love to see more sewing projects as well -- the pleated apron and embroidered quilts were so, so fun and awesome.
Happy Anniversary! And a giveaway to celebrate
Friends, I started this blog one year ago today. 156 posts later (!), I am having so much fun. I continue to learn with each post and comment. Thanks to every single one of you for reading. As one more way of saying thanks, I am doing a giveaway! Win a cowl of my own design (pattern to be po...
This is blowing my mind. When I was watching Dawn knit Tate's blanket (http://www.idlehandsdc.com/2010/12/tates-blanket.html), I remember feeling amazed that she could keep only six(?) strands from getting hopelessly tangled. I can't even fathom 1000 strands. Wild.

Hello again, from O Chickadee! I am happy to be among you again. The subject of today's musings is extreme knitting. Have you ever seen those giant knitting needles? Like the really huge ones, so big that lifting them must actually help tone your arms? I have, and have always wondered what...
I also really love the Mountain Spirit and the Half and Half Boar, although there's something bizarrely realistic and yet oddly comforting about the Wall Mole. Which is nice, because I find actual moles to be bone-chillingly creepy (they have hands for noses!)
Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair
Last Saturday, I headed over to Adams Morgan to check out the Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair. It was intense! The show is incredibly curated: every booth showcases work that is creative, cheeky, and fun. Here are some of my favorites: supermaggie I love supermaggie's t-shirts, which I've ...
This is the most adorable sweater ever - I love the tiny buttons and the way the yarn looks so soft. What a fun gift.
Finished project: Caitlin's sweater
Pattern: Soft N Seamless Baby Sweater by Lynda Ward, available for free on ravelry Yarn: Lion Brand Jiffy in San Diego (washable, soft, and all-around great for baby projects) This was such a fun sweater to knit. Easy, quick, and adorable (at least, I think it's adorable). 1/17/11 updat...
