General admission to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center will be free for all veterans, active duty military and their families this Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, thanks to the generosity of U.S. Air Force Veteran and Discovery Center Board Member Dr. Steven Davis of Londonderry, NH. Veterans Day events at the Discovery Center will include special gallery activities, opportunities to view NH National Guard patches included in Christa McAuliffe’s Personal Preference Kit from the Space Shuttle Challenger (on loan from the NH Adjutant General’s Office), the photography display, Flags I Have Seen by US Air Force Veteran Eric Anderson of Bow, NH, the vintage 1956 XF8-U Crusader jet (on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola FL) and to explore the Center’s permanent exhibits. Extensive damage to base trestle bridge due to flooding waters of the Ammonoosuc River and debris has rendered the railway inoperable. The trestle will be repaired and the tracks inspected before operations resume. The railway expects to re-open for its regular season in the spring of 2018. Continue reading

In connection with The Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition, this film series will explore some of the many cinematic portrayals of Toulouse-Lautrec. Each film portrays the spectacle of cafés and cabarets, dancers and dwellers who populate the slopes of the “Mount of the Martyr” at the end of the nineteenth century. On November 9 enjoy a special screening of French Cancan (1954), a technicolor masterpiece by director Jean Renoir known for its beautiful dance numbers, the movie is centered on the formation of the Moulin Rouge, Lautrec’s favorite nightclub. Free general admission. A $5 special exhibition charge applies for those not-yet-members who are 13 years and older to view The Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec. Continue reading
