"History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with the pale gleams the passion of the former days. What is the worth of all this? The only guide to a man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions. It is very imprudent to walk through life without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations; but with this shield, however the fates may... But Romney’s record was exceptional by any standard. The blogger Steve Benen, who meticulously curated and documented Mitt’s false statements during 2012, clocked a total of 917 as Election Day arrived. Those lies, which reached a crescendo with the last-ditch ads accusing a bailed-out Chrysler of planning to ship American jobs to China, are not to be confused with the Romney flip-flops. The Etch-A-Sketches were a phenomenon of their own; if the left and right agreed about anything this year, it was that trying to pin down where Mitt “really” stood on any subject was a fool’s errand. His biography... Continue reading

The longer I stare at figures like this, the more impressed I am with how well Say's Law worked between the peak of the housing boom in the third quarter of 2005 and the start of the recession in the first quarter of 2008. Housing construction (and government purchases) sit down. Exports, equipment investment, and nonresidential construction stand up. Even as of 2008:III, the sum of the components of autonomous spending was only 0.7% of potential GDP lower than trend. It is in the next three quarters to 2009:II that the autonomous spending shortfall grows swiftly to -5.6% of GDP.... Continue reading

In July, I wrote about our upcoming Connected Vehicles Safety Pilot driver clinics. The first of these was in Brooklyn, Michigan, at the Michigan International Speedway, and participants were pretty excited about the new safety technology. Today, Brainerd, Minnesota, hosts our second clinic, and I can't wait to see the results. via fastlane.dot.gov Continue reading

I've spoken more than once in the past couple of weeks about the Sherman Minton Bridge. As you may recall, that's the bridge on I-64 connecting Louisville, KY, and New Albany, IN, across the Ohio River. After decades of overuse, it's been shut down indefinitely because of dangerous cracking. via fastlane.dot.gov Continue reading
