Best laugh I've had in a very long time. Thank you for that!
JCCC2: in which Settlers of Catan is played on a boat
The boat rocked as gently as a giant boat can rock when it's pushing 19 knots. A fresh breeze made small white caps in the sea. The sun -- the Nerd's natural enemy -- was directly above us in a cloudless sky. I sat with Anne on the aft pool deck of the Westerdam, my feet floating in the water. "...

Loved Earthworm Jim when I had it. Never got past the giant boss battle where Earthworm Jim was bouncing up and down on giant booger bungees with the boss. Tried downloading it as a game for my phone, but the controls weren't responsive enough and I gave up on it.

A pair of twenty-something Bros, dressed and posed in a manner that was such a hilarious cliche, if I described them exactly as I saw them, my editor would have said, "no, that's too cliche," stood near the front of the store, communicating in some kind of Broglish that leaned heavily on the wor...
Lego games ROCK! Can only do the Lego for DS or Gamecube (I'm behind the time on consoles), but still way fun!

Heh heh heh heh.
(p.s. I remembered that picture was from the JoCoCruise, but Doctor Who is better.)

That's a bummer. Maybe if a friend has a copy, I'll try it. It's just so...satisfying...to actually be able to beat up the bad guys, you know?

Shouldn't your Fez picture be wearing a bowtie?
Are the Pokemon games on DS turn based? I've always sticked with Zelda because it's free roaming and you can actually physically attack the monsters. How does the battle system work on the Pokemon games?

I had a revelation today. Something I never thought of before. The Kindle 2 could be an incredible boon to the disabled. My brother is quadriplegic. He's done the audiobook thing often. But can you imagine having a Kindle 2 where all you need is just one device to listen to thousands of books? It could really open things up for him. I'm sorry, but in this instance, I am for the Kindle 2 and against audiobooks, simply for the ease of my brother.
wil wheaton vs. text 2 speech
There's quite a dustup at the moment about an editorial the president of the Author's Guild wrote in the New York Times, railing against Amazon's Kindle 2, which has a text to speech feature that he claims creates unauthorized derivative works and should be stopped at all costs. I'm not the only...
omggggg. I can say that had some pretty darn good photoshopping. I think I'm more concerned about who actually DID paint those pictures. disturbing.
your daily dose of surreality
I have no idea what the hell is going on here, but I love it: (via Reddit)
But we didn't get to hear the nerd joke (star trek joke about offspring). The video starts when the people laugh and you say "yeah, I made a nerd joke, whaddya gonna do bout it?"

Phoenix Comicon Rock Band Video Roundup
Crazy ideas that may or may not be crazy are taking up pretty much all of my free time this week, so my Phoenix Comicon trip report will have to wait until Monday, but since I promised to deliver a Rock Band roundup before the end of this week, here we go. First up is Karen B., seriously rocking...
Kicking Ass and Taking Names! as usual! :D
My question is, though, I can't figure out how Rock Band tracks points for the singing part. I can understand the rest of the instruments because you are hitting things along with the icons that move across the screen. But how does it measure the singing?
it doesn't make a difference if we look cool or not...
After playing Rock Band 2 for 2 straight hours and struggling though some songs I've never played before, I was worried that when the videos started making their way online, I'd look like an asshole who didn't know how to play fake instruments, and that everyone would laugh at me. But when I...
Hey, everything's all pretty and new here. :D Nice!
hit robots, make fall down
I'm writing this on Wednesday afternoon, before I start packing for the Phoenix Comicon, where I'll be when this post magically appears on my blog, so please forgive me if there's some timely current event I should be talking about; I can't really travel through time, you know. If I've done ever...

Considering the first bunny is named Gimli, and TODAY IS JRR TOLKEIN'S BIRTHDAY!!!! (or at least really close to it)
PICK A TOLKIEN NAME!!!
It's only right.
And Now It's Time To Play Name That Bunny!
Attention, peeps! We have an urgent situation that demands your immediate attention! So stop whatever you're doing and listen up! (That open-heart surgery can wait, trust me.) Sender-inner Elizabeth T. (no, not Taylor, but that would be awesome) sent us these two pictures, and a note: I got ...

growing up star wars
I'm from the Star Wars generation. I was the perfect age when the original movie came out, and Star Wars toys and merchandise absolutely defined my childhood. I'll never forgive George Lucas for taking one of the most important parts of my childhood and forcing me to watch while he took a giant ...
I still say the best thing about Episode 1 that made the whole movie worthwhile was Darth Maul and the 2 bladed lightsaber.
THAT THING KICKED SERIOUS ASS!!!! ...until Darth Maul got sliced in two.
BUT STILL!

Anne and I went up to Oregon this weekend to visit her grandmother. We try to make this trip at least 4 times a year, and the Autumn trip is always our favorite. The changing leaves, and cool weather restore a lot of our hit points, and this year getting away from the chows in the house gave us ...
How can I hate OpenOffice? Do you know how annoying it is when the bulleting or the numbering turns on automatically and you can't get the stupid thing to stop? And you turn it off and it still does it? Or you import a .doc file and it is totally fucked up on your screen? A .doc file with forms and tables and such import so badly that it's worthless to even try.
Plus, there's the fact that the new Word 2007 is COMPLETELY different from the old version, so who knows the compatibility issues that will now arise.
Sometimes OpenOffice is just a headache. But, it serves it's purpose.

omg. I've been using OpenOffice 3.0.0 beta for months now and I've HATED it. Why? Because it automatically did stuff I didn't want it to do, even if I turned it off, it would turn back on again. It was so FRUSTRATING! But I just downloaded the stable version and it looks ok so far. Plus, there was this thing called "formula" and I went "What's that?" I opened it and it was OpenOffice MATH! OMG! I hope I can use it in my statistics class. Anything to not have to buy a $150 calculator!
I sure hope it isn't frustrating to use anymore. I never downloaded the earlier versions since I have a Mac. Crossing my fingers it works well.

The Graveyard Book.
I drove 6 hours through a 6 car/2 fatality crack up (normally a 3 hour drive) to see Neil read from his book in Seattle. I heard Chapter 4, he showed a preview of Coraline, and had a kickass Q&A session. Got an autographed book he signed ahead of time, since he broke his finger in China last month. If you don't subscribe to his blog, I HIGHLY recommend it. He also is posting video of all the chapter he reads on his Graveyard Book tour, so you can listen to him read the whole book by the time he is done. :D
Q: What book are you currently reading? Is it good so far?
I don't do memes, because once I start, I doubt I'd be able to stop. That wouldn't end well for anyone, especially my cat who is bacon-averse. This morning, though, while I was Propelling, I stopped at SF Signal and saw Quick Meme: What are You Reading? Q: What book are you currently reading? I...

Remember how radical it was when you got your first dirt bike in the 80s? Mine had a red frame, hand brakes, and yellow pads that told the world it was a Red Line BMX. I wish I could say that I was sad to retire the banana seat bike I'd loved since Christmas in 1978, but I was 9, and felt like I...
OMG! I HAVE THAT HARD ROCK CAFE PIN! I found it on my Hard Rock Cafe black jean jacket that I bought in 1989 from the HRC in NEW YORK! And I REFUSE to throw the jacket away because it is TOO DARN COOL and I WILL fit in it again someday! YOU'LL SEE!

can someone tell me, in a nutshell, why this guy is a bad guy and why he got disbarred? I'm having trouble understanding it. The newsstory was a bit convoluted and I don't know the backstory.

in which wil gets no work done
I have a theory, and it is mine. It goes like this: When I get up early in the morning and go straight to work, I produce an avalanche of words before I get tired, about nine hours later. When I get up later in the morning and go straight to work, I produce substantially fewer words, and never r...
