Dear Friends, Amazing things have happened in the past six months. I felt waiting until Christmas to write would be a wonderful present to all of you since you've all helped give the gift of rehabilitation to my father, please watch the video link to his gift to you. I... Continue reading

This week marks the anniversary of my father's stroke. It was on Mother's Day, a year ago that I last had an actual conversation with my Dad. He also spoke to my son Oscar (then 8) at lenght about his upcoming trip to China and about how much fun he'd... Continue reading

This might not be exciting news to you, but, as an expat American-Australia (I'm a dual citizen and have lived equal amounts in the US and Australia), I am particularly thrilled that one my favourite home stores is arriving in Sydney this March. This past Christmas was the first holiday season spent out of the US in twelve years. I missed my annual pop into Pottery Barn to buy a Christmas ornament. I also missed Thanksgiving, another time of the year when Pottery Barn offer fabulous holiday entertaining decorations. Its not just the holiday decorations I miss, its the ease... Continue reading

As the end of the year draws closer, I've thought back over the past eight months remembering the first moment I found out about my Dad, the aftermath of complete shock that followed and the continued journey through recovery we still explore. The one thing though, that I think about... Continue reading

I'd like to thank all of you for your continued incredible support. Without you I would not be able to manage the day to day goings on of my fathers life. There's been a lot to deal with emotionally, but also financially, and without the continued support and kindness from... Continue reading

It's been a while since I last posted an update. Life gets in the way, and things just carry on. I'm so used to our altered life now that I guess its easy to forget how quickly time passes. Dad has come a long long way since May, though he... Continue reading

Dad has been at Phillip House for almost three weeks now and nursing home life is beginning to take shape. I really wasn't sure how the home was going to be. The first week I have to admit was rough, though I'm not sure who it was worse for -... Continue reading

Dear Friends, This is just a quick update to let you know tonight is Dad's last night at St. Vincent's Scared Heart. They have been amazing, with particular praise for the OT's, PT's and speech pathologists, who have all been so incredibly supportive and persevered with Dad. They are all... Continue reading

Dear Friends, It is with great sadness that I write this post today. No, Dad has not passed away. I can't even describe the sadness I feel for my father right now. It is so incredbly difficult knowing that his remaining years will be unfulfilling. That his quality of life... Continue reading

I'm happy to report Dad has made some improvements. Firstly, you've got to understand that of all the stroke symptoms a patient could have resulting from a severe stroke, Dad has them all. Secondly, he's at the worst end of the spectrum for all of them. However, he is making... Continue reading

From Ruth Zuckerman: I went to see Ted on Friday Saturday and Today (Juy 1st). It was great to spend some time with him, he did recognise me and on Saturday he had a huge smile on his face and he put his hand on my face. I have a... Continue reading

Dear Friends, I thought it would be nice for you to hear the reactions, feelings and thoughts from some friends of Dads. Myra Salonga and Ruth Zukerman have kindly given me permission to share their accounts. Myra Salonga: It was such a humbling experience to see Ted yesterday (July 1st)... Continue reading

June 24th I think Dad is beginning to understand what has happened to him. The past two days he's been quite sad, with a very different vibe about him. Previously, he was always upbeat, and smiled a lot at us and friends who've come to visit. This state of bliss... Continue reading

Dad has been in Sydney for 10 days now. He was at St. Vincents for a week before they moved him across the street to The Scared Heart Rehabilitation Centre (formerly known as the hospice). He is doing well considering the significance of his stroke. Before I tell you of... Continue reading

Rarely do I wish I was wealthy. But the day we moved Ted from Narita to Sydney, I wished I was rich. Then I could have tipped every person who helped us $100. At the end of the day, I would have given out $5400. It took 4 Narita nurses... Continue reading

We have some rather fabulous news... Dad will be leaving Japan tomorrow evening. He arrives in Sydney with Merideth on Wednesday morning and will be temporarily residing at St. Vincents Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center in Darlinghurst. This will be a hectic time adjusting, so we ask that you please give... Continue reading

Who can have a stroke? Anyone. It's not just smokers and drinkers and the stereotyped unhealthy folks. Seemingly completely healthy individuals can collapse from a stroke leaving them unable to care for themselves, altering their lives forever. If you are healthy and considered low risk, or are someone with a non typical stroke profile, (a typical profile, according to The American Stroke Association, is: smoking, diabeties, high cholesterol, and obesity to name a few), then how would you ever know you might collapse on a flight, while driving, running, babysitting your grandkids or on your way to work if you... Dad sounds like he's getting stronger. All your kind words, prayers, well wishes and encouragement means so much to all of us. Thank you to everyone that has gone above and beyond to assist us. Here's Merideth's wonderful account: Yesterday was a great day for Ted, because he had visitors-... Continue reading

When we get to Sydney, I am going to get these things for Ted: 1. A proper barber to come give him a hot towel shave. I kind of like the Jeremiah Johnson look, but whenever they free his good hand, he scratches his beard a lot. So I think... Continue reading

This week I made some major headway and managed to get Dad into St. Vincents Hospital, though we are still not sure if he'll go into the stroke care unit or into rehabilitation at Sacred Heart. Here's the latest from Merideth: Good news- we can fly Ted to Sydney soon,... Continue reading

Merideth arrived today! Yay. It was a very special moment for Dad and Merideth. Merideth's first reaction to being here in Narita, "Wow Tat, you weren't exaggerating, it really IS in the middle of rice paddy fields". For those of you who don't know where we are, I'll explain. The... Continue reading
