I remember our science teacher just gave us the day off.
some of us are looking at the stars
On January 28, 1986, I was home from school with the flu. I remember that, no matter what I did, I couldn't get warm, so I was sitting in a hot bath when my mom knocked on the bathroom door. "There was an accident with the space shuttle," she said, in the same voice she used when she told me th...
Did I just get rickrolled by f-ng Wheaton?
Yes, yes, I did.
2008 Convention Schedule
Scalzi does these posts from time to time that are filled with information, mostly so he can point people to them when the information contained therein is requested at some point in the mysterious future. This will be one of those posts. It may be updated from time to time, though it's more lik...

Stop by the Chicago area on this tour, wouldya please? C'mon we got 157 demands;)
announcement 5 of 4 (math is hard!)
According to Eventful, 84 people have joined a demand for me to come to San Diego. I usually come down for Comic-con, but with the eleventy billion people down there every year, it's not exactly the most intimate environment for a reading and signing. So I've been looking for a more reasonable v...

Nice post.
I just got my Mom to realize that iChat is not hard, and she's been video chatting all the time. New (to my non-geek family) technology is fun.
the family that frags together . . .
It's been painful, joyful, scary, and wonderful that Ryan's away at school, out of our house, and in a place -- physically and emotionally -- where I can't protect him. I have to hope that I did my job as a parent, and when he makes mistakes, they result in skinned knees and not broken bones. So...

Wheaton... lemme get this straight. 2 posts and a hundred comments because you had to reboot your TV? lol. You're a geek.
That was a powermove MrPeach. Great stuff.
teacher, mother, secret lover . . .
On the advice of commenter MrPeach, I unplugged my television, disconnected and re-connected my HDMI cable, and powered back up. I'm not entirely sure why it worked, but it did, and now I can watch the US Open in HD. All my other channels came back, too, and the offending DRM-esque error message...

Shit now I just read like a fanboy. Oh well, guilty.
must. have. bioshock.
PAX settled it for me: I must have Bioshock, Gears of War, and an Xbox 360 to play them on. Also, Rock Band. So this is my lazyweb of the year: What's the best way to build a 360 system? Is there even a way to build it? I'm thinking about picking up the Elite wherever I can find it cheapest, and...

That doesn't seem as clear as I intended it. I loved the keynote, and would highly suggest you look into your opportunities on the motivational circuit. I know nothing about it, but I know your better than most of the corporate speakers I've ever seen.

Naw man, jk of course... phreakin awesome keynote. Just got done listening, and it was all the above. Dude, you gotta come to Chicago (or better yet the rural school I teach at outside of Chicago;) You make a great "inspirational speaker".

Happy happy joy joy!
happy birthday, mrs. wheaton!
I worked on Ben Ten this morning, came home, changed into shorts, and spent the rest of the day at the beach with my family, to celebrate Anne's birthday. Now I get to gather up my books, pictures, Sharpies and other convention items, pack my clothes, and get ready to head out to Vegas at the cr...

The only thing worse than the Democrats is the Republicans, but today I'm even more pissed at the Democrats than usual. That bill made me want to throat punch someone. Notice that the bill makes something they were all ready doing legal. That means it was illegal. Where are the indictments?
question of the day
What do the Democrats — especially their feckless Senate leaders — plan to do with their majority in Congress if they are too scared of Republican campaign ads to use it to protect the Constitution and restrain an out-of-control president? Bonus question: what the hell were the Democrats thinki...

I listened Wheaton. It was good. Please do more.
Any thoughts on the WSOP? Did you see Pauly cashed?
Radio Free Burrito: Episode Nine
Inspired by Goldfinger (the movie, not the band) and alone and a little bored in an empty house while my family is away, I decided to do a special episode of Radio Free Burrito. This is entirely a music show, playing Exotica, Easy Listening, and Lounge Music from Comfort Stand Records, which i...

Thanks for writing. If you charged less, you'd probably get more readers;)
stats
According to Feedburner, about 30,000 individuals have subscribed to my RSS feed. According to Typepad, about 500,000 people actually come to this site every month. That's awesome. Thanks for reading, everyone.

Barenaked Ladies released their last album as unprotected mp3z on flash drives.
Slightly more here.
pump up the volume
It's fairly big news in the Cult of Mac that Apple computer settled its lawsuit with Apple records, and now the two companies can play nice. This is especially good news for Beatles fans, who really want to buy Beatles tunes from the iTunes Music Store. What I didn't even know until this morning...
