Late last Friday night, I received a message on Instagram about this pair of socks: A friend saw them on, and was double-checking to make sure I was the designer behind the print. If you know me at all, you know I designed this: Yep, they certainly looked a lot like my design. But sadly, they are not. All of these years of watching independent designers get copied by large corporations or national brands, and now it looked like I was in the same boat. Having no idea what to do, I posted my disappointment on instagram, and decided... Continue reading

It was about this time four years ago when I was putting together my very first fabric collection. Once the designs were ready to go, I bought myself a plane ticket to Houston. I was going to shop my book around Quilt Market and try to get a fabric line. It's funny to look back at that early work... I called that first group "Ruby Star Rising". When Kokka officially asked me to design for them, I strayed away from most of the original designs for my first collection, but decided to keep the name. It hit market the very... Continue reading

Well in defense of Americans, most people don't *make* them but buy a box of pre-packaged cards with popular cartoons and Disney tween stars on the front, and just fill in the to and from box. I'm shocked that this isn't an international phenomenon:)

I have never, in my life, been this early for Valentine's Day. I'm pretty sure it was only two years ago that I dropped my 3 year old off at school, realized to my horror it was Valentine's Day, rushed back home and crafted 22 Valentines, and drove them back to school in time for their 10:00 party. This year, however, I have Ruby Star Wrapping on my brain, and decided to use some projects from the book to make Valentines for my son's class. These 5-minute party pouches took way less than 5 minutes each to make. And I... Continue reading

Judy, this is so nice! Thank you for taking the time to tell me you like the book. I really appreciate it:)
Guess what?! My typewriters finally made it to Gelaskins! In honor of this, and with the upcoming holidays in mind, I'd like to offer a $100 Gelaskins gift certificate to one lucky winner on Monday (good for anything on their site, so please, take a good look around). Leave a nice friendly comment, and I'll do a drawing Monday afternoon! (added 12/10)... and we have a winner! Congratulations Robin, and thank you everyone for your comments! Continue reading

So, as you know, Ruby Star Wrapping hit the shelves at the end of October. Since then, not one but two Wrap Alongs have started up, and there's going to be a Ruby Star Wrapping contest on Sew,Mama,Sew! beginning December 10th. The prizes for all of these events are amazing! The book is full of inspiration for making resourceful, reusable, beautiful handmade gift packaging. Here are some of the awesome things people have made in the Wrap Along hosted by Sukie. Don't forget to link up your projects on her blog to win prizes (really good prizes!) Projects courtesy of:... Continue reading

I have this idea that people do things like watch TV or sit around in their jammies reading books on a Saturday, or have friends over, or even leave their house once in a while for a non-grocery-or-school-related-activity, but based on my own experience the past few months, I'm dubious. We just finished a 23-week-long construction inside the space in which we live and work (and the space, crazily, didn't get an inch bigger, it was just torn apart and put back together to feel bigger and work better for us). In the midst of that, I somehow created my... Continue reading

Kim, that is so funny and sweet that you found the beginning of my blog. Yes, I suppose I did do it. Fun to look back:)
I just wanted to let you know about my latest gelaskins design, based on the vinyl print in my spring fabric line! Wanna know what's nice about designing for gelaskins? I'm not limited to 12 colors, as with fabric design. So, I made a super-colorful explosion of vinyl records for your pleasure and enjoyment. You can get this design (or three others by me) printed on skins and cases for most any flavor of electronics: smartphones, e-readers, laptops, gaming systems, earphones, remotes... order here! Time to talk about my new book, Ruby Star Wrapping! For the first few years of my career in fabric design, I was lucky enough to have my dear friend Allison help me with some of the more business-minded aspects of my work. A natural-born writer, she would handle communications while I focused on planning and just making my designs. We always talked about writing a book together; she loves to write and I love to make stuff, so it seemed like a perfect combination. Fast forward to the holidays of 2010. I had been thinking for several months about... Continue reading

Hi Michelle! This line hits stores in late July. It will be distributed in Australia, but I'm not sure which shops will carry it. It's widely available online, though! Just google melody miller fabric or ruby star fabric and you should be able to find it. Let me know if you need any more help! PS: I love your instagram feed:)

While it's practically ancient history, I've just come out from under my pile of boxes and vintage knick knacks long enough to tell you about my first quilt market booth. Also, having finally had enough sleep to string an entire sentence together, I wanted to say: Quilt Market was fun! This was the first time my husband Greg was able to come along, and he took some great pictures of my booth. It was super-fun to have him at Market with me, and he loved everyone he met. That's Keiko from Kokka and me sitting on my sofa. She has... Continue reading

Have you seen the most recent issue of Mollie Makes? Wanna know what's coming up in my new spring collection, Ruby Star Vinyl? *edited to note: full scale 45 RPM records, silly! no vinyl fabric here:) Check out page 11 for a tiny peak: It's all new and exciting stuff, printed on the same gorgeous 60" wide lightweight cotton/linen blend from my last spring collection. The line will debut at the Spring International Quilt Market next month, and I'll show you more as we get closer to market. Hint: I was able to talk Thomas Knauer, Lucie Summers, and my...
