6"x6", oil on panel. I hesitated to paint this apple because all that variation in local color threatened to break up the form. And then realized that was an excellent reason to try it. (The apple is now in my son's lunchbox.) Later today I will be at the RISD... Continue reading

6"x6", oil on panel. This on has been on the easel for the past couple of weeks, waiting patiently for a few minutes of attention here and there. I used a photograph from a day back in December when my family went hiking in the woods. I like how the... Continue reading

One of a few portrait sketches I am working on for a couple who live in Virginia and currently have grandchildren in Morocco and Chile. 12"x12", oil on canvas. As you may know I have moved the posts on my more daily painting practice to moveablepaintbox, a blog Elizabeth Hutchinson... Continue reading

This clementine was a gift from a YMCA spin class teacher last week, before Christmas. It has been waiting patiently in my studio until today. 6"x6". oil on panel. Brought to you by legos, which my son has been playing with all morning. Now we will escape together into the... Continue reading

I crammed the whole late summer garden in a jam jar earlier this month and have been working on it bit by bit. Even the buoyant morning glories strangling the joe pye weed are in there. I am particularly interested in the transition from fully vibrant to crisply shriveled. 40"x40",... Continue reading

Sixth floor of the RISD Museum, looking from the elevator, through the lamplit galleries, toward the sunlit hallway. I love the way the glass display case captures the cool, bright daylight and makes it into a free-standing shape in the middle of the otherwise warm light of the room. That's... Continue reading

This Virginia road bends through the woods with a clearing up ahead. I love how the great green trees envelope it, an intoxicatingly verdant respite from the gazillion lanes of concrete Beltway nearby. I have included a few process shots of the painting and one of my pallet early on.... Continue reading

I have been working on this one for well over a year now: the tile pattern got puzzled out last summer, then the tulips, and finally, this month, the lemons. 30"x30", oil on canvas. Continue reading

Sundays, 1:30-3:30pm, October 5, 19, November 2, 16 & 23 I love drawing at the RISD Museum because sketching seems to magically increase the museum's content and my interest in it exponentially. What strikes me as funny is the fact that I am surprised by this every single sketch, year... Continue reading
