You can say that again. I feel like I've been put through the ringer and that is NOTHING compared to what my dad is going through.

So where are we
It's July, 2012 and we've been homeschooling for 3 and a half years. So, where are we? Both kids: Biblical Studies - we use this curriculum from Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa. It's the best we've found. Writing- Writing With Ease 3 by Susan Wise Bauer. This is an intensive "how... Continue reading

The power of the read aloud
I was not very good at reading to the kids when they were little. That is, of course, a terribly embarrassing admission, but there you go. At reading to the kids I sucked. Until we started homeschooling. I was determined that we would real aloud together every day. We did... Continue reading

You can't make a twin fin spotanus. The only way to get one is through buying eggs. IIRC it took many, many hatchings to get one. Your first batch of eggs ever contains one, but if that dies, you are sunk. My only suggestion is to keep hatching eggs.

Charlotte Mason meets Classical Education
We're using the science series from Apologia Press which is written very much in the Charlotte Mason style. I like it for its readability, the diagrams and the warmth that flows from the pages. (I like it mostly for its unashamed 6-day creation focus and the fact that it brings... Continue reading

Daily Routine
It took about a year and a half of trial and error to figure out a daily routine that works. It's not perfect, it could do with some refinement and it wouldn't work for all families. For what it is worth, this is what our day looks like. Morning Session... Continue reading

What and why
It's taken just over 2 years to reach a point where I am totally comfortable in what we're doing and why we are doing it. The deschooling process was long and complicated as I was totally unused to thinking critically about what I was teaching and why. Teaching your own... Continue reading

A long overdue shake up
We've been meandering along in this loosely classical framework that we have going and evenrything has been marvellous, until I woke and realised it was June. Already. Only half a year left, and a *pile* of schoolwork to do. Last Sunday afternoon, I put my teacher shoes back on for... Continue reading

Schoolroom resurrected
With the coming of the cold weather we have had to resurrect the schoolroom. Normally this room is stroage only and we use the dining room for learning at. The cold weather has meant a need for heat and the schoolroom is better at being heated, so we're back in... Continue reading

Shakespeare
I was able to buy and download "Shakespeare For The Ears" yesterday. I found it via a homeschooling link site. Thanks to the dollar being higher than the greenback, it cost less than the advertised price. It seems an excellent way of introducing Shakespeare to the little people in manageable... Why the classical model?
When we began homeschooling in 2009, we planned to use an eclectic approach with a school-at-home feel. That didn't last long and for good reason. Home is no more school than school is home. Thankfully we met up with another homeschooling family who introduced us to the classical method and... Continue reading

Monday Night Nachos
For a number of reasons Monday nights are a bit stressful here in PuggleLand. The solution has been Nachos. These nachos do not have the Heart Foundation Tick of Approval, but one of the ingredients does, so that's good enough for me. Joanna McMillan (or McMillan Price) whatever her name... I can't believe it! I have exactly the same piece of fabric in my (tiny) stash ready to make into a Lindie bag...the pink one with the flowers inside the little squares that's in the middle of the lap quilt photo.
The blanket looks great too :)

Tonight I'm sewing in a million yarn ends on James' blanket. I'm determined to get them all done before I go to bed, then tomorrow I'm going to start on the edging. It's getting so close to completion. Happy, happy. In-between the crochet I've been slowly cutting out strips for the lap quil...
