Most excellent news! I'm looking forward to reading it. Just put it on My List!
Not self-help, but soul-help.
"Damn, girl. You write good." -Lee Hancock, Dallas Morning News My newest book, LIFE IS A VERB, is now available! My next book, Creative is a Verb: 37 Days to Unleash Your Inner Artist, is coming out in the Summer of 2010 and outlines Six Creative Commitments for living life as a creative ...
You nailed this for me with something as simple as a cookie. A free cookie. That was really quite profound for me.
I, too, would like to thank you ladies for growing this into something amazing. Of course, I hope I'm not one of the complainers you're talking about - the post I wrote on Monday is a reflection of a small percentage of women who choose to write.
I love to write. That's why I'm still doing this.
This was my favorite part of what you wrote:
Why do most of us attend the Community Keynote, a swagless, boozeless affair that forces us to listen to other people reading their posts? Because it's amazing content that brings us closer together in the listening. It cements our belonging in that community. I believe we crave that more than we crave free stuff.
Yep. That brings me closer to more writers and for that I am ever grateful to you women.
Some thoughts on BlogHer'09: A founder's and a blogger's view
Every year after BlogHer, I take a few days to take in the wrap-ups and accounts and to assess the role our event, and even our organization, plays in the women's Blogosphere. It's a level of introspection that I rarely achieve anymore on my personal blog, but considering that this blog, and the...
CSN just started contacting me via email and now I must go back and seriously peruse their site. Thanks for the heads up on this. The lamps are beautiful.
CSN Stores Table Lamps Giveaway!
I love getting good email. The kind that puts a smile on your face and makes your day. Well, I got one of those and I get to share it with all of you Lookiloos. CSN Stores is offering us, not one but two of these modern Cyndel Table Lamps in brushed nickel for a giveaway. It's a fabulous ...
This bloody, gory mess we live with is almost second nature at this point. (That wasn't meant to be a joke about Mother Nature, but I'll be darned if it doesn't work here!) My aunt was 10 when the onset of menses occurred and my mother warned the three of us girls about it way before then so that we'd know what to expect.
When I see you next week I promise not to bring any of this up, ok?
Mother Experiences Gruesome Flashforward
I came crashing out of sleep to my daughter yelling, "I have a nosebleed!" When we reached her bedroom, she was sitting up, catching the blood in her hands. I took her into the bathroom, lights on in that the-lights-are-on-at-3:30-a.m. way, and started to clean her up. The blood was already dri...
Best of luck with the band. Fun and danceable certainly does have its place. ;-)
I can't get into the whole Poken thing but that's because no matter how many times people explain it to me and I click on links that explain it to me I just don't get it. I'm just not drinking the Kool Aid.
Plans? Lots of time with my boys. Wii boxing. Painting my toenails for a touch up until the pedicure. Getting a facial tomorrow. Possibly shaving my legs so I don't cut the hell out of them and wear bandages during BlogHer.
See you soooooon!
xoxo
Average Jane Needs To Blog More Often
I am getting to be such a bad blogger that I'm almost tempted to start shunting my Google Reader shared items into a post every few days, just to have something interesting posted. (Pet capybara!) Barring that, here's a quick update on a few things. On the music front, I've gotten together a cou...
Girl, you are a GOOD mom. You patiently show him the way with every step.
Way to go. BOTH of you.
authentic learning & summer fun
It's all part of being the sandwich generation: we helped my in-laws move from their home of 40-some years to a condo. Packrats that they are (bless their hearts), they couldn't manage to downsize quite as much as they needed. Result? A condo basement full of Random Indescribable Stuff. Good son...
I love how you kept saying "we learned" because even the experts in education are learning about kids. You are fighting the best possible fight for your son. Keep on. You know that I'm supporting your efforts and cheering you on.
More importantly, for me, I'm learning, too. From your efforts, from your son, and from all kids with IEPs.
The lessons we didn't want to learn
Parenting is a steep learning curve. During Amigo's junior year in high school, we learned that it doesn't matter if the doctor or doctors diagnose Asperger's Syndrome; the school system doesn't have to recognize or follow a doctor's recommendation. We learned that teachers might make statemen...
Love Amos Lee. Mason introduced me to him. Not, like, in person you know. But still. Pretty awesome.
Happy Christmas! (Feeling British today)
I'm dreaming of...
Howsabout a Christmas Eve edition of Snippet Wednesday? Ho-Ho-HACK First the good news, I'm pretty much done with what I had over the weekend. I'm back to having a varied and flavorful diet with few to no gastrointestinal repercussions. And just in time for Katie to get sick. Which she did yeste...
I don't get into race wars in the kitchen unless I don't get an INVITATION TO EAT.
Then, I'm cool. I believe MLK, Jr. said something about the races sitting down at the table together. If you're cooking, I'm all for that! ;-)
Open up your mouth and feed it...
Just had to share our little culinary experiment with all of you... It's a white pizza (yes, MochaMomma, we're starting kitchen race wars again), meaning nothing but crust, garlic olive oil, and cheese. Our definition is, of course, open to interpretation. The cheese we used is a four-cheese b...
Oh, honey! That's awesome! Yes, everyone WILL see it and you can say, "There was a picture of me in the highest grossing People magazine EVER."
I was just thinking tonight how I need an indoor fitness routine because this humidity is forcing me to stay inside. Sad, isn't it?
But good on YOU.
Brangelina's Babies and Me
This week, I am enjoying my 15 minutes of fame: If you turn to page 128 of this week's People magazine, you will find a picture of ME, standing in front of my Wii Fit. At least, I think that's what you'll see, because I haven't been able to get my hands on the issue yet. The reporter who interv...
I love my big iPod and I thought I'd never fill it up. It's not quite full yet but I have the option. It's about having OPTIONS. Women must know this better than men because we have a buttload of shoes.
Go for big, Kevin!
Winner takes it all, loser takes a fall...
Time for Snippet Wednesday #2! (and there was much rejoicing... yay.) Closer Katie and I started watching the TNT series The Closer on DVD recently and are loving it. The final disc of season one should be in today from Netflix and then we're on to season two. We've also set the DVR to catch any...
You're doing all the right things. I'm inspired listening to all the changes you've already made! Good on you.
But we need a respite. For sure.
False Economies
$4.29. That's what I paid for a gallon of gas on Monday. I don't have to tell any of the readers of this blog that times are tough all over. For the last few months, I've found myself in the unaccustomed position of the person who rains all over everyone's parade. I have been trying my darndes...
Dude. I did snippets today! And I had already declared myself having a "Feel Good Wednesday" thingie.
That 404 kicks so much ass.
Boom, here comes the boom...
I'm starting to wonder if I should just declare Snippet Wednesdays. Everybody seems to have themes of some sort... Dave's Bullet Sundays, ajooja's Friday Bullets, Avitable's Lazy Sundays... and they all center on weekends. I think we need to give some recognition to the middle of the week. So, y...
Enjoy the vacation. I'll bet it will do wonders for you.
Not There Yet
I hate to write when I'm in a mood like this, which is obviously why the posts this week have been few and far between. On Friday, Lil C got a DTaP vaccine shot, which made her arm swell and her personality much too much like mine, so that hasn't helped things either. Plus, I still itch a lot....
Why did you do that to me? Why did you get me all happy and excited for Katie and allow me to formulate my "Congratulations!" speech to her because we both share the passion for education and then you go and tempt me with those last few links and NOW?
Well, I can't finish a thought and my eyeballs are bleeding.
Crazy, that's how it goes...
I'm just going to hop aboard and see where this train of thought takes me this morning. Buckle up! Don't worry, this train is eco-friendly. Katie is done with school (ed note: done for the semester)! She knows, for certain, that she has As in two classes and she's pretty sure she got an A in the...
I was gonna go with "Hawaiian", too. But then my daughter called my son that very word the other day. He seemed confused, but she's all kinds of hip so I'm going to ask if it that's making a comeback.
Plus, I'm going to shop for a new bra so it's a WIN-WIN.
A real American hero...
Some snippets! Brah I was talking to some guy the other day. Not sure who it was or what it was about, but when all was said and done, he finished off the conversation with "no problem, Brah." Yeah, "brah" pronounced like "Erin go..." or an article of feminine undergarment. Since when did this b...
I'm from a good Catholic family. We didn't talk about sex. Only abortion and I recall seriously NOT connecting the two.
Why are you asking me?
I got pregnant at 14. Coincidence?
And the flowers and the trees...
Is the age of the old "Birds and Bees" speech dead and gone? I'm not sure why I'm asking this or why I'm even thinking it for that matter, but here I am. And I'd seriously like to know if the days of dads sitting down with their sons (and mothers with daughters, for that matter) and delivering s...
Katie stays where she falls is pure poetry, man. Market that stuff. You'll make a killing.
I'm surprised she didn't growl at you like a monster and rip you to shreds for waking her. How nice of her.
The sidewinder sleeps tonight...
How's that saying go? "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry" or something similar? Dunno how mice play into it, but I do know it happens for men (and women... I'd hate to sound sexist as we all have the innate ability to go awry). Last night, Katie fell asleep really early on the co...
I want to capture lots of things I can't believe I get to see. Also, I want to show them to the world in the hopes of me being able to stop shouting, "No! I really heard that! Yes, I DID see that!"
Giveaway Time On Chicago Moms Blog - you will "flip" for this one........
We are THRILLED to announce the two lucky winners of the 30 minute, Flip Video Camcorder. Drum-roll, please..... The first lucky winner is Jennifer W. from My Beautiful Baby. Jennifer told us "Wow! I'd video tape my mom with my sister, her kids and my son before she passes away (cancer). Then ...
You are wicked. I'm only forgiving you because of what you said about book dustjackets. That's the ONLY reason, too.
They've given you a number and taken away your name...
Have you ever looked at yourself in the context of where you work and what you do for them and wondered if there was an ulterior motive behind your hiring? A more nefarious purpose for you at your place of employment? Do you mean like that little catch-all tagline on your employment contract tha...
You are so wildly entertaining. And weird.
Spanish business? Or was there supposed to be a comma there: Spanish, business. That is pretty cool. I've never heard of it. And to think you got the degree at a university in the middle of a cornfield.
Hmmm... muy interesante.
And I feel fine...
Hey all. Sorry this post is coming to you so late. However, I didn't need to have one done before I left for work today simply because I have the day off! Yep, it's Veteran's Day and I'm sitting at home right now. I haven't had this as a holiday since grade school or high school. Somewhere aroun...
I know what you mean. I was there last week all gaping-mouth and jealousy and wondering WHERE ARE THE CABLE CARS IN ILLINOIS? but it did no good. The plane was on time, even. Sorry, dude. Time to come home.
Glad you're having that much fun, though!
I don't wanna, baby, I don't wanna...
Nooooo.... You can't make it end! You can't take this away from me! I. Won't. Let. It. In case you were wondering, this is the last day of our vacation in San Francisco and I don't want it to be so. I figure if I bitch and whine enough, maybe the powers that be will allow it to continue in perpe...
Great post! Normally I would just read YOU and skim it (I'm telling on myself terribly just there, aren't I?) but I loved it. Having just been on 4 planes in the last week, I must admit to only really looking for the Mile High Couple.
Alas. I did not see them.
Unless they were the ones wearing the trenchcoats.
Let me introduce to you the one and only...
Considering how much writing I've done in the last week or two in anticipation of our trip out to the left coast, you'd think I would have gotten sick of it. You'd assume that I might just give in and call it a day and just recruit a whole motley crew of guest posters to cover for me. But I'm ju...
Every once in a while I will check the paper and they will TELL US where the cops will be sitting. Why would they do that? Then, I just slow down during that time.
Uhhhh...I mean... I'm still very careful about my driving.
Lord I'm no thief but a man can go wrong when he's busted...
If I learned anything from my commute home yesterday, it is: We are nearing the end of the month, and The Batavia (IL) Police Department is sorely behind on their ticket-dispensing quota As I was driving up Randall Road, I noticed a cop who had pulled a vehicle over on the side of the road. No ...
Ditto what Eve said. But it's CST here. You know that.
You expressed the "triple jumper" quite well and even sold the idea to me. I had never really thought about that, but it makes travel so much faster and far more fun to do.
Spidey's webs are, in fact, biodegradable. When he's slinging all over the city you never see the residue, do you? See. It's all gone. How nice and neat of him. I like a superhero who doesn't leave a mess in his wake. That's very important to me.
Good stuff, Kevin! I'm off to read about hot dogs now. Thanks for playing!
Tell me more, tell me more...
Before I go into my post today, I wanted to take a second to hype up what I feel to be a very important post by one of my brothers in blogger arms, Mikey Miller of Who Do I Have to F&$k to Get Laid. He recently interviewed Jeanne White-Ginder, the mother of Ryan White, the young boy who contract...
