I've been planning to try my hand at NPR's Three-Minute Fiction since it first started. Each time, before I knew it, the deadline had come and gone. It almost got away from me this year. But on the day of... Continue reading

Mr. Peete, when you were a Chicago police officer, it was a well-known fact that you could barely find your way to the men's room. So, if I waited on you to book me, I'd be at large for the next 30 years, :)

Here's my Root commentary on the Sikh tragedy. No more commentary here. It speaks for itself. Sikh Slayings: White Anxiety Gone Extreme America's browning drives a backlash that found its most virulent strain in Wade Michael Page. By: Monroe Anderson... Continue reading

I like that idea Mike. It could take it away from Republican-dominated states and, if the Obama Administration announced plans to do it now, could take all much of the steam out of the voter-suppression movement.

I’d heard about Chick-Fil-A long before I tasted it. It was being touted by a few of my friends as so good it would make you want to slap your momma. Last year, while driving out east, my wife, Joyce... Continue reading

The Root called me last night to ask if I could do a quick turnaround commentary on the president's speech at the National Urban League. The is what I wrote. Obama's Careful Urban League Speech The president kept his message... Continue reading

While attending the National Association of Black Journalists convention last week in New Orleans, I came up with an idea as to how the Obama Administration could help us understand the historic health care law. I wrote a column about... Continue reading

Barack Obama sang the blues last night. I saw it coming. When Chicago’s blues icon Buddy Guy started egging the president to join in on Sweet Home Chicago, I figured I was about to witness an encore singing excursion, a... Continue reading

On the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, the Chicago Sun-Times assigned all its Sunday op-ed columnists to write on the subject. Below is what I wrote. I've cut and pasted it from a wingnut website, Free Republic. If you'll... Continue reading

Ok Herringpost Now that you've told all the educated blacks in Chicago what they're doing wrong, in all your wisdom, please share with me what they should be doing to make it right. Or are you just filled with piss and vinegar without a good idea to be found anywhere? btw, are you educated? Just askin'.

The Root asked me to write a piece on Carol Moseley Braun's run in the Chicago mayoral race. I talked to half a dozen Chicagoans who are hip-deep in the city's politics. None had anything glowing to say about the... Continue reading

The blame game started Saturday within hours after reports of the Gabrielle Giffords assassination attempt in Tucson. The left correctly blamed the right for all the hate speech and political vitriol that may have fed the madness of accused murdered... Continue reading

@Black Women Reaganomics, which George H. W. Bush described as Voodoo Economics, did not work. The CEOs at the corporations got richer and the people at the bottom got trickled down on. According to the Economic Policy Institute report, in 1965, U.S. CEOs in major companies earned 24 times more than a typical worker; by 2007, they made 275 times more. U.S. CEOs also make far more than CEOs in other advanced countries, the report said. Thank you trickle down economics.

@atty2chgo I suspect that you're right since not one of the reporters at the table was from the President's hometown or had a history with him.

@Don When you write about "serious freedoms being put at risk" and not bother to tell us what they are, you sure sound like a wingnut to me. Redeem yourself. Explain what these freedoms are and how they're being put at risk.
