I understand fully what you are saying but I also see that you missed the point of that comment. What the author is saying is that "working hard" is a strength and not a weakness and that a person looking for a new job should never use a strength as a weakness. It is foolish in the least and humiliating to the extreme. It's kind of like the gorgeous model type, who weighs 98 pounds soaking wet asking "does this make me look fat?". It's a stupid ploy meant to draw attention to their strength and to not admit a weakness. Please feel better about yourself and don't feel that the author was judging those who work hard. The statement was meant for interviewees who feel they can slide through a difficult question with an inane answer.
