This Friday, August 31 the Moon itself will be BLUE to honor the passing of Neil Armstrong, the first to walk on the shores of the Sea of Tranquility.
Blue Moon,
You saw me standing alone,
Without a dream in my heart,
Without a love of my own.
Rest in Peace, Neil.
Rest in peace, Neil Armstrong.
I met Neil Armstrong once, at a dinner to honor Jimmy Doohan in the early 2000s. He was not much taller than me, but he was a giant of a man. He was as kind as he was intimidating. I don’t remember what I said to him, or what he said to me, because all I could think the entire time was “This m...
NASA, USA, American Ingenuity. That is what we are looking at. Twelve Americans walked on the Moon 40 years ago. We should be walking on Mars today. Maybe the success of MSL will prompt the government to restore some of NASA's budget cuts. You were privileged to watch the landing at JPL--what an honor. BTW, one of the technicians at JPL looked like Brent Spiner's character in the movie Independence Day.
I couldn't believe it, myself, but this is a real picture.
Last night, Anne and I got to go to the Jet Propulsion Labratory to watch the landing of the Mars Curiosity Rover. It was a powerful, emotional, inspiring experience. When I think about how these scientists flew something the size of my car to another planet and landed it almost exactly where th...
Wil, happy birthday! When I turned 40 I thought I was OLD. Then I snapped my fingers and I was 70. I try to be as honorable as Worf and as awesome as you. And nobody has ever called me a dick, so I guess I am succeeding in that as well. "Live long and prosper" \\ // _
Happy Don't Be A Dick Day!
When I gave my 2007 PAX Prime Keynote, I said Arcades were more than just magnificent geek Shangri-Las, filled with all sorts of video games and pinball machines. They were a vital part of my generation’s social development. If I beat another kid in a two player game and taunted him mercilessly...
A bit off-topic but a heads-up about Planetfest in Pasadena. Witness live the landing of the rover Curiosity on Mars, Sunday, August 5, 10:30 p.m. PT at the Pasadena Convention Center on Green St. Tickets about $37.00. Register online at planetfest.org. Bill Nye the Science Guy is in charge. He may give Wesley a free pass.
The newest #Tabletop is a real #Fiasco!
The newest episode of Tabletop is Fiasco, my absolute favorite storytelling RPG of all time. Fiasco is "a game about ordinary people with powerful ambition and poor impulse control. There will be big dreams and flawed execution. It won’t go well for them, to put it mildly, and in the end it wil...

ECCC Programming Question: What do you want to hear at the Awesome Hour?
I've been working on Big Bang Theory for the last week. We tape tonight, and tomorrow I immediately start work on an audiobook*. The upshot of this is that I won't have a lot of time to build a setlist for my Awesome Hour at Emerald City Comicon this weekend. So this is where you come in. I need...
Great photo of you, River (RIP) and the others. Also a technically great photo--the lighting, contrast, etc. are perfect. It's amazing what you could do in a darkroom with a good piece of FILM.
On the set of Stand By Me
This picture was originally posted on Tumblr by thefactory-: You know that montage when we’re walking back home, near the end of the movie, and we go by in silhouette during sunset? It’s what they used as inspiration for the poster. This picture was taken when we filmed that little bit. That...
"The three Magi saw the child Jesus with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh." Matthew 2:11. These were the first Christmas presents.
2011 Reddit Secret Santa - I got 4 + Q Gifts, but it was the non-gift in the box that was the best of all
Last year (also known as two weeks ago) I participated in the Reddit Gifts Secret Santa exchange. My giftee is a Batman fan, so I gave him a copy of Gotham Central, autographed by my friend Ed brubaker, who wrote it. I also gave him a copy of DC Universe Online, because it's really fun to preten...
Great relationship you have with your sons. Wishing you a blessed Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Ryan's home for the holidays, before he moves far, far away for his new job (hey, check out my son! He graduated college last week, and he starts a great job in two weeks! Go Ryan!!) The first night he was home, I told him that the warm covers for the bed he's sleeping on were in the dryer, so...
"And a gentle breeze stirred the trees in the backyard..." From the news reports you have had more than a gentle breeze in your neighborhood. Tell us about it. Thanks.

Further adventures in Homebrewing
It was warm on the patio, and a gentle breeze stirred the trees in the back yard. The Postal Service played on the Sonos. A Stone Pale Ale sat on the patio table, condensation beginning to bead up on the neck and run down the bottle. Next to it, the 10 gallon cooler I’d turned into a mash tun wi...
Wil, happy Thanksgiving. I spent the day watching ST:TNG marathon on BBCA==Darmok, The Game (with Ashley Judd), etc., etc. We have lots to be thankful for.
title of the blog post
When I was reading back through my archives in preparation for Wil Wheaton versus Paul and Storm last week, I thought, more than once, "I really need to write more." Each time, though, my calendar grabbed focus and shouted at me like Jules in Pulp Fiction until I begged it to stop. I miss writin...
Wil, it is good to be emotional. Everyone needs to cry once in a while. I remember in your older posts how you cried for Sketch and Felix the Bear. Data always wanted to be able to cry to be more human. I am sure you did not cry when you left Star Trek.
Eureka: This One Time At Space Camp
In a few hours, I will be picked up and taken to the set for my last day on Eureka. Though I've known this day was coming for a couple of weeks, and I've been trying to prepare myself for it, I'm not ready. I don't want this to be over. I don't want to say goodbye to my friends. Monday, we had o...

I am easily amused
So io9 did this thing called the 10 Suckiest Fake Video Games That People Play In Science Fiction. Spoiler Alert: The Game from, uh, The Game is number one. 1) Suckdisk from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Actually, we don’t remember this game having an actual name on the show, but “suckdisk” f...
Saw you again tonight on Eureka. Your disruptor was quite different from a Klingon disruptor. Hope to see more of you on future episodes.
on birthdays and making beer
Anne and I took the train up to Santa Barbara for my birthday, and it was awesome. Because I've complained about Amtrak employees who were dicks in the past (K. Williams on the southbound Surfliner to Comicon, I'm looking in your snotty, sarcastic, condescending direction), it's important to me ...
Nine years ago I was one year older than twice your age then. How old am I now? F - 9 = 2(W - 9) + 1 . I love math. Do you love math? Live long and prosper \\//_
Spock is not impressed that it's my birthday
During w00tstock last week, I mentioned that I was turning 38 this week. After the show, Anne told me that I was, in fact, turning 39. In the few seconds that it took me to do some math, I lost a year of my life. Apparently, this is the sort of thing that happens when you get to be my age, which...
Wil, happy birthday tomorrow. As President Reagan always said when asked his age, "I'm 39 and holding." So hold on to that age as long as you can. Live long and prosper. \\//_
io9 really liked Glimpse! Go Team Eureka!
Alisdair Wilkins at io9 really liked this week's episode of Eureka: "Glimpse" is my favorite episode of the still young season 4.5 - it had a great central threat, it did some nice, light work on the various relationships, it had some good jokes, and it gave plenty to do for the two main guest ...
I was actually surfing SyFy looking for ST:TNG when I came upon Eureka, which I do not usually watch. You were great!! Your voice sounds different from Wesley--more mature of course. You were definitely not wearing a muscle suit. And a voyage to Titan? How primitive. Looking forward to seeing you again next week. "Live long and prosper" \\//_

EUREKA: Glimpse
Last night's Eureka, Glimpse, was my first episode as a non-enraged-by-the-enraginator-device Doctor Parrish. I had completely forgotten about Fargo's commercial for the Astraeus project at the top of the show; when I saw that, the excitement of shooting the entire season came flooding back to m...

Thank you to everyone who commented on my last post. I had no idea so many new readers were visiting my blog; I'd just assumed that the Internet had gotten bored with me, moved on to whatever the new hotness is, and I was writing for the few, the proud, the geeky who had been here forever. Knowi...
Tomorrow, April 9, is "Clean Day". Just as you celebrate Pi Day on March 14 (3.14), April 9 is Clean Day--409. Get it?

two hundred words before six in the morning
When the alarm went off at 5am, I wasn't sure where I was. I mean, I knew I was in bed, but I was on the wrong side of the bed, and why was I awake when it's still dark outside? After a few seconds, my brain finished booting up and I remembered that I am in Vancouver, I sleep on the wrong side o...
Happy "Moon Pi" day. So chocolaty and marshmallowy.
happy pi day, my darling mathletes!
I wrote this in 2004: This morning over breakfast, I said to my wife, "Happy π day!" "Happy pie day? What the hell are you talking about?" "No, not 'pie'," I said. "'π'." "Not 'pie,' but 'pie.'" She was clearly not amused. "Isn't it a little early to be drinking?" "Anne, look at the date on the...
I am older than dirt and remember all the space triumphs and tragedies from Sputnik to the ISS. In the early days I was thrilled to think that men would walk on Mars in my lifetime. Now I realize that is not going to happen. When our government goes bankrupt we will be thankful to have food on the table. But we can still dream impossible dreams.

Wil,
Last night I was sitting in the back of St. Joseph's Church, there were no other people in the church, the lights were out, a few candles were burning in front of the Nativity set. I sat there and contemplated the birth of Jesus and I said a prayer for you. Merry Christmas.

Merry Swayze Christmas, Internet.
To: WriterWithCats: "...had their telescope trained on you and your kid..." Anne is Wil's wife, not his kid.
To: MarkSchneider: The quote about Wesley by the Traveler is probably from episode 6--Where no one has gone before. If not there, try episode 172--Journey's End.
starry starry night
I stayed up until almost one this morning, reading comic books. I know, it's like I'm 12 all over again. And it's awesome. Around four, Anne woke me up. "What's wrong?" I said, while I was still waiting to clear immigration between Dreamland and Reality. "Nothing. I just couldn't sleep, so I got...
