I think you should take another look at syllabub. It's a great hit at my JASNA meetings, especially when I have a generous amount of good sherry! It's a fun way to get close to something Jane would have eaten. And since it's made with whole cream, it's so much better to share with a large group than eat at home. This is one of the modernized, adapted (and simple!) recipe I follow, based on my own research on the net of recipes both traditional and modern:
500 mL whipping cream
1 tsp vanilla
1-2 tbsp lemon juice
1-5 thimbles sherry
pour all into a mixing bowl and whip until thickened, reaching a consistency that is foamy, thick, but still runny; not stiff. try it on top of egg nog (excellent!!) or as a dessert topping of pie or cake. the traditionalist will say that syllabub should be a drink, but who wants to consume that much cream, on its own, in one sitting?
