by Natalie Ok, everyone, I have a confession: I can't braid hair. I mean, I can do plain old pigtail braids, but I cannot do ANYTHING fancy, and both of my daughters have bobbed hair (thank goodness) that doesn't need many accoutrements. However, I would LOVE to be able to do fancy braids. I've researched hair blogs, I've watched YouTube tutorials, I've looked at the "how to braid hair" step-by-step instructions in magazines. And still, I am completely inept. I don't know if it's that I'm watching someone, and so the image is reversed when I look in a mirror... Continue reading

by Natalie I realize that it isn't REALLY fall, despite the fact that my kids start school next week. It's hot as blazes, the pools are still open, and I wear sandals or flip-flops every day. My mailbox, however, seems to think that fall is on the way, and all the fall catalogues have been arriving. Though I wipe tears of laughter from my eyes as I eye the mohair sweaters, wool peacoats, and ribbed tights on the covers of the catalogues, I do sit down and look through them just for fun. Should I become magically wealthy in the... Continue reading

by Natalie Do you have any particular symbols or icons that mean a lot to you? The fleur de lis has always held a special place in my heart since I grew up in New Orleans. The fleur de lis is a symbol for many things; the three leaves represent the Holy Trinity (New Orleans is historically a very Catholic city), and it was also the symbol of Jeanne D'Arc (Joan of Arc) who is the patron saint of New Orleans. It probably first became assigned as a symbol to the region back when Louisiana belonged to the French; this... Continue reading

by Natalie I love whimsical art and decor for kid rooms, and of course, I turn to Etsy to fill that need. One of my favorite stores is Kate Durkin, who makes adorable pillows and wall art featuring animals. My sister gave both my girls Kate pillows for Christmas one year (which is how I found out about her) and now I love to give these as gifts. How charming are these whales? Or maybe you're more of a dachshund type? I myself love a giraffe: But I find sailboats extremely charming too. (How cute for a little boy's room?)... Continue reading

by Natalie I'm a huge mystery buff. Cozy armchair mysteries, thrillers, whodunits, classics ... you name it, I love it. I'm especially a fan of Agatha Christe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and in general, I'm not a fan when people mess with the classics. There are a lot of post-Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes mysteries written by others (I'm not sure why that is, except that he was such a revered figure in the genre) but I never really loved any of them until I read Laurie R. King's Sherlock Holmes series. You'll want to start with the first one,... Continue reading

by Natalie There are freezer paper stencil tutorials all over the internet, but here's just one more for your viewing pleasure. I love to give a handmade gift, but after my homemade baby quilt kick a couple of years ago (which, while fun, was incredibly time consuming) I hadn't really found a replacement "personal" gift that I could whip out quickly and efficiently. Enter: the freezer paper stencil dress! I have all of the necessary items on hand: freezer paper, fabric paint, an iron, scissors, and a paintbrush (I use a sponge brush, but you can use a regular paint... Continue reading

by Natalie Though I love my DSLR, I fully admit that I take most of my day-to-day photos with my phone. The saying goes that the best camera is the one you use... so I guess that speaks for itself. I, like many others, am a huge Instagram fan, and lately I've been seeing amazing underwater photos appear in my photo stream. I did a little Google research and came up with: the Lifeproof Case for the iPhone. This case is apparently completely waterproof and submergable (is that even a word?) up to 6.6 feet deep. It has a screen... Continue reading

by Natalie Austin, Texas is famous for lots of things. I'm sure that if you have ever visited or thought about visiting, you've gotten advice about eating at the Salt Lick, going dancing at the Broken Spoke, or walking on South Congress. People have probably told you to eat Tex-Mex at Chuy's or Maudie's or Guero's, and have probably suggested that you stop in at Uncommon Objects or Feathers (they carry vintage cowboy boots!) for some shopping. You've probably taken a look at the University of Texas campus (Hook 'em!) and headed to Kerbey Lane for pancakes at all hours... Continue reading

by Natalie I wear a pretty standard Timex watch all the time (this one, in case you're interested), and it's served me well for several years. The band is interchangeable; I have a few colors that I rotate every few months. Lately, though, I've been feeling like I want something more "grown up." Is that weird? Maybe. But I can't help it that all of the Nixon watches are calling my name. I'm feeling the gold ones especially, and I'm pretty sure one of these babies will need to make its way to me soon. Maybe the Cannon? Or perhaps... Continue reading

by Natalie Let's be honest here. Despite the fact that I did go and buy myself a big, grown-up blow dryer (yay!) it is now completely out of season for me to dry my hair. Yes, we have a hair dryer season in Texas, and that season is October to April(ish.) Also, though I work during the summer, my work environment is considerably more relaxed than it is during the rest of the year, so I don't worry about showing up with bangs clipped back in a bobby pin and hair shoved up in some Spin Pins. I have several... Continue reading

by Natalie Awhile back I wrote a couple of photography posts with basic info on using your DSLR and the meaning behind ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. All cameras are equipped with these, and it can be really helpful to have several lenses with which to practice shooting. Your camera most likely came with a "kit" lens, which is probably a basic zoom lens. These are generally fine, but aren't anything to write home about; there are inexpensive lenses out there that are much better for learning and for shooting. One such lens is the 50 mm f/1.8, which is... Continue reading

by Natalie There are so many ads out there for things that are "miracle face fixers!" that I'm pretty skeptical by now. I don't have any specific face issues that I'm trying to remedy, but I do have some spots and discoloration from sun exposure (ah, youth!) and from the occasional zit (which: wrinkles AND zits? Pretty unfair, thirty-three) that I'd like to fade if possible. I have a pretty good skincare regimen, I think; I wash at night with a cleansing oil, use a Clarisonic in the morning with a foaming cleanser, and wear sunscreen religiously. I get the... by Natalie Whenever I post a picture of my kids playing in our backyard pool during the summer, I inevitably get questions about what it is. We had one of the inflatable pools when the girls were younger, but it was always springing leaks and then would mildew if the water wasn't COMPLETELY emptied every day. And while I don't mind cleaning, I reserve my energy for scrubbing mildew from bathrubs, not backyard inflatable pools. One day when we were at the feed store (yes, I live in a city; yes, I like to entertain my children by taking them... Continue reading

by Natalie As I've gotten older, I'm learning more about how to handle my skin. I'm religious about sunscreen (see here and here) and I'm vigilant about washing at night before bed, exfoliating, and using good moisturizers. Every once in awhile, my skin needs something more than just the regular routine, though, and that's where the this fantastic mask comes in handy. It's the Fresh Sugar Face Polish, and I mean it when I tell you that this is nothing short of a miracle. It's granulated polish with brown sugar and strawberries and lots of other things that make it... Continue reading

by Natalie I love Sephora as much as the next girl, but I love finding a bargain at my local drugstore/Target even more. We here at Style Lush all love our mascara (and judging from the comments, our readers do, too) and so I feel as though it would be wrong for me not to share my latest find. Ladies (and gentlemen?) I present to you: L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes. This does wonders for my not-very-long lashes; it builds without clumping, and makes my lashes look not only longer but also thicker. Plus, even though it's already 95 degrees outside,... Continue reading

by Natalie It's been (ahem) awhile since I last bought running shoes, and the technology moves so freaking fast these days that I'm always completely stymied when I walk in to a shoe store because the options are ENDLESS. Cushioning for the heel! For the instep! For the sole! For people who pronate! For people who run on the balls of their feet! (For the record, those people concern me. It looks VERY TAXING.) Anyway, I've been a Brooks fan in the past, but when I went in to find my old standby, they had changed it up and now... Continue reading

by Natalie I'll start off by saying that while I have nothing against tattoos, I actually don't have any. I have friends who have GORGEOUS tattoos, friends who have tattoos they regret, and friends who have tattoos in places they can't see whithout a mirror and therefore forget even exist. For April Fool's Day, I ordered a bunch of temporary tattoos from Tattly. Are you familiar with Tattly? They have modern and pretty temporary tattoos by a bunch of different artists, and the designs are gorgeous. I've always thought that if I DID get a tattoo, I would probably get... Continue reading

by Natalie It's happened, people. I've suspected for quite awhile that I've been slowly turning in to my mother, and it's now confirmed. I hear myself saying things she has said to me my whole life, and I'm starting to realize that she has always been pretty much right about everything. I mean, I KNOW she's a smart and wonderful person and if I turn out to be REMOTELY as good a mother to my girls as she is to me, then I'll consider myself successful, but it's turning out that she's right about a lot of practical things, too.... by Natalie I'm sure the title of this post has some scratching their heads in confusion. "Summer?" you're thinking. "It's barely April! What's wrong with this woman?" Well, people, it was 90 in Texas just the other day so... yes. I proclaim that summer is here. If you need me, I'll be crying in the corner. (NINETY DEGREES. I shudder to think what July and August are going be like this year.) In any case, I have a go-to summer dress that I shouldn't keep to myself, and I've already busted it out this year. Those of you from the... Continue reading

by Natalie For as long as I can remember, Easter baskets have been a big thing at my house. My parents would hide them and my sister and I would have to hunt for them in our house and in our yard, and they were always chock full of fun things. They had candy eggs, sure, but we also always had a few special things, too, and I'm carrying on those traditions with my girls. First of all, it's already warm in the south, and we always received our first bathing suit for the year in our Easter baskets. I've... Continue reading

by Natalie So after my last hair post, I went ahead and chopped my bangs, and I love them. They're versatile and easy, and if I don't feel like styling them I just wear a scarf as a headband, and Voila! Lazy hair! I was most worried that if I got bangs I wouldn't be able to have lazy hair days any more, and I kind of need lazy hair days, you know? In any case, I've been browsing around the internet and Pinterest to find other ways to style bangs, and I couldn't not share since you lovely people... Continue reading

by Natalie I've been on a pretty severe spending lockdown since, oh, 2009. That was the year I had my second daughter and left my job to be at home full-time, and we made the appropriate budgetary cuts in order to accommodate me being a stay-at-home parent. With that budget came the obligatory "buy only the necessities and the OCCASIONAL fun thing" mandate, and we've stuck to it for the past three years. (The "fun things" haven't always been "fun" so much as "hey! we need a new sink!" and things of that nature.) In any case, my younger daughter... Continue reading

by Natalie I get that Valentine's Day is all commercialized, yada, yada, but I still like to make little gifts for my kids to celebrate the holiday. One year I made little heart shirts with with their names on them, which got opened at breakfast and then worn all day, and another I baked heart shaped cookies. Nothing too crazy, but still fun and festive. This year I stopped off at Paper Source and did a little shopping... man, that place could take ALL my money and I wouldn't even blink. I love it so. I picked up a cute... Continue reading

by Natalie The weather we've been having in Austin lately is just gorgeous, but it's been giving me the mistaken impression that we're already well in to spring. While it was 71 and sunny today, and we went for a hike, and had a picnic, this can only mean that February is bound to be rainy and frozen. However, this hasn't stopped me from wanting all of Madewell's spring dresses. This one is calling my name: I love a stripe, so this makes the top of my list. Though I would like to say the shoes and socks are RIDICULOUS... Continue reading

by Natalie Well, lovely readers, it's that time again. Riiight about this same time last year, I asked you all if I should cut my hair. You came out in full force with great advice and I got spooked and totally got a medium length cut and... no. I should have gone big and cut it all off or not cut it at all; the medium length didn't do a thing for me and I ended up growing it all out again anyway. So! Brisk clap and fast forward a year, and I'm back in the same spot. Though I'm... Continue reading
