Wow. They say each birth is different but I think we got quite the example of that. It took me several days to piece together what happened, as I emerged from somewhat of a twilight zone, recovering from surgery, but holding a healthy beautiful girl. It's been taking time to emotionally process too since in many ways we are very lucky everything turned out alright - perfect baby, and although mama is scarred up, I should heal completely - but it was a rather scary experience. Let me recount. First, with Tesla, I started labor at night, and was home... Continue »

OK, so I have some news to share with you. Today, April 22nd, is my last day at SAY Media. Including 2 years at SAKK and 4 years at Six Apart headquarters in 548 4th street, this has been an incredible venture and terrific experience for me to work with all of smart people on numerous exciting projects, but I figured it's time to move on. I should have a lot to write, but instead i'll dump some memorable pictures :) Man, that's a lot of memories. I'll send everyone a big hug and thank you for making my days at Six Apart/SAY so much fun! P.S. I'll take a quick vacation next week, and will start a new gig... Continue »

In past years (2008, 2005), I've listed my favorite search queries of the year that've led visitors to this blog of mine. In 2010, I have only one, but I need only one, because I'm that proud of it. And... Continue »

I remember telling my mother that I had a "corazonada" (a hunch) that the baby would come early. She was happy to hear this, and I was so sure that my instincts were on target that I started to wrap... Continue »

As the era of Six Apart comes to a close, and I look back on my almost five years here, there is a group that I feel deserves just as much recognition as the rest of us... plus some treats and belly rubs. I'm talking, of course, about the Six Apart Dogs. Dogs have been a huge part of the culture around here for as long as I've been on board. Like them or not, they've always been present. Most were well-behaved, but some would get their wild on from time to time, and that was ok. Sometimes we'd encourage... Continue »

Today is my last day at Six Apart. It's been 3.5 years with an outstandingly clever and humane group of unforgettable friends. I dedicate this Apperceptive/Six Apart-NYC montage to all of you. [WARNING] This is a long, photo-intensive, inside-joke-ridden post.... Continue »

Six Apart acquired by VideoEgg. End of an era since I've been with 6A pretty much since the beginning, working in that old dental office, hammering away on emails seated between the CEO and President. We used to all go to lunch together way back then. I got married and had a daughter while at 6A. I got to be totally open about who I am (i.e. a Burner), and got to work closely with Tokyo, my home. It's a new chapter, and this makes sense in many ways. But this is a biggie...no more "Six Apart" where we called... Continue »

This is the best angle of the beginning of the work on my right arm. We did four and a half hours on Saturday. I think it'll probably end up being somewhere around 20, my tattoo artist is pretty fast. There's another magnolia further down on my arm that you can't see in this shot. This tattoo is sort of a memorial tattoo for my father. When it's finished it'll have three magnolias, a hummingbird, a red tailed hawk, tree blossoms, and a portrait of my mom and dad from the 60s. It's already incredibly beautiful and we're only a... Continue »

[[This is part of my no new clothes in 2010 resolution.]] I've been sewing a lot lately but haven't been blogging much, partly because I'd rather be sewing than be online. But so many people stopped by after Mena linked to my blog that I feel a little more inspired to document a few recent projects. Thanks, everyone! About six weeks ago I embarked on my first serious vintage project. I call it serious because I was going to use a vintage pattern from the 40s (McCall 5786) and four yards of vintage fabric I bought off of Ebay. My... Continue »

[[This is part of my no new clothes in 2010 resolution.]] After completing a couple of ambitious dresses, I was ready to take on a faster and simpler project. I'd gotten some yellow dotted swiss on Ebay with the vision of making it into something summery, and Simplicity 2132 seemed like the perfect pattern. I decided to make View 3 with short sleeves but to use View 2's Peter Pan collar. It started out pretty simple to construct, including the tucks down the front plackets and sleeves. What gave me some trouble was the collar. In the "Cutting Notes" there... Continue »

As per usual, Mena and I had a grand old time at the most recent Alameda Antiques Faire. We hit the grounds early, and split up to follow our own strategies for seeing as many booths as possible at the enormous event: Mena skims the booths quickly, making note of the ones she wants to return to, while I start on row A, booth 1, and methodically look at everything everyone has to offer. While I am goal-oriented when I'm antiquing, I also love just looking at the endless variety of stuff from the past. For me it's equal parts... Continue »
