Too true - but then anyone with an agenda is always needing to control because of an already pre conceived notion.
Pubs are the best analogy to explain community, especially community on the web.
I think if an "owner" badly manages the community, the community will kick back. x

The answer to your first question is "no comment"!!!!
LinkedIn, does not interfere and the community "seems" to shape it - but I agree they need to interject some "stuff" into it as it's way behind in application.
